1-2 Special Takes Radu Jude’s ‘Dracula’ for North America

As an eager film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to announce that I, as a new distributor, have secured the North American rights for the forthcoming horror-comedy masterpiece, “Dracula,” from the brilliant Romanian director Radu Jude, who has previously wowed us with “Bad Luck Banging Or Loony Porn.

The upcoming movie, set to debut in competition at the Locarno Film Festival, is advertised as a unique interpretation of the iconic vampire tale, blending elements such as vampires, zombies, graphic violence, sexual content, artificial intelligence visuals, high-speed car chases, and the dark humor that Jude is known for.

Jude expressed his immense joy and deep appreciation as Dracula will be reintroduced to American viewers,” he said. “It’s more accurate to say ‘reimagined’, considering its global journey and numerous transformations by the American cinema. I’m eager for it to don new garments, crafted in the soul of genuine Transylvania. Whenever people ask who Dracula is in this movie, I respond that the film itself embodies Dracula. Furthermore, I consider this film as a modest tribute to underrated American artists such as Ed Wood, Andy Warhol, and the Fluxus filmmakers.

The deal was negotiated by Luxbox on behalf of the filmmakers with 1-2 Special.

This deal signifies the ongoing partnership between 1-2 Special and director Radu Jude, whose recent work “Kontinental ’25” we acquired from the Berlin film festival this year, which was our first international acquisition. The contemporary drama earned Jude the silver bear for best screenplay at the event.

Earlier this year, Jason Hellerstein, who previously worked at Sideshow, introduced 1-2 Special. This venture has been financially supported by private equity, and its mission is to establish itself as a unique distributor specializing in art house cinema, with a focus on both domestic and international theatrical releases.

As a gamer, I’d say “Dracula” is a collaborative production between Saga Film from Romania, Nabis Filmgroup from Austria, Paul Thiltges Distribution from Luxembourg, RT Features from Brazil, Samsa Film from Luxembourg again, Bord Cadre Films from Switzerland, Sovereign Films from the UK, and MicroFILM from Romania.
