10 Best Classic Villains From Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!

10 Best Classic Villains From Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!

As a long-time fan of the Scooby-Doo series, I can’t help but reminisce about the unforgettable encounters with these supernatural creatures and the human villains behind the masks. One such episode that stands out is “Jeepers, It’s the Creeper” from Season 1, where the green-skinned fiend caused quite a stir at the barn dance.

Over time, Scooby-Doo has tackled numerous mysteries across different movies and shows, with the journey beginning back in 1969 through the series titled “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You at?“. The show’s signature format is instantly recognizable: the group stumbles upon a location terrorized by some mysterious entity, gets drawn into the situation and eventually reveals the monster to be nothing more than a crook in disguise.

In the initial Scooby-Doo series, several antagonists became iconic, reappearing in subsequent movies, TV episodes, and comic books. Some of these villains served as models for future characters within the franchise. Interestingly, contrary to popular belief, the 1969 series wasn’t overly predictable. The show offered numerous unexpected turns with its villains. Frequently, the gang encountered a new villain instead of the usual suspects. Additionally, the masked monsters sometimes had unanticipated motivations, and at least once, the monster turned out to be genuinely real.

10 The Black Knight

Season 1, Episode 1 – “What a Night for a Knight”

“The First Night for Scooby-Doo and Friends” introduces us to the first episode of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, where the day’s monster, the enigmatic Black Knight, is the very first villain encountered by our heroic quartet. Later tales often regard this case as their initial mystery they ever successfully resolved. In the narrative, it appears that some tricky sorcery is responsible for animating a suit of armor under the glow of a full moon.

The Monster That Started It All…

Indeed, it’s been unveiled that the ghostly knight is nothing more than a fabrication devised by the museum curator, Mr. Wickles. Alongside his associates, he’s expertly forged replicas of the museum’s artworks, secretly peddling the genuine pieces on the black market. In essence, they used the haunted knight tale to deter visitors while executing these switches. They even resorted to abducting a professor skilled at identifying fakes to maintain their scheme.

9 The Swamp Witch

Season 1, Episode 13 – “Which Witch is Which?”

On my way home from an exhilarating fishing trip, I found myself face to face with what seemed like a shambling figure on the road. After making a quick detour to grab some supplies at the local store, I heard some chilling tales about this apparition. It turned out that it was no ordinary pedestrian, but rather a creation of the town’s resident sorceress. This witch and her undead minion had been causing quite the stir among the townsfolk, leaving many of them too frightened to leave their homes.

“Smoke of Evil, Make Her Vanish!”

Remarkably, this witch adorns her home with human skulls, evoking memories of the notorious Baba Yaga. She terrifies children by employing voodoo dolls and manages to make Daphne seemingly vanish. However, it’s important to note that there is no genuine magic in her tricks.

It turns out that the woman disguised as a witch and the zombie were actually town residents named Zeke and Zeb. They had secreted away stolen cash within the swamp. Here’s an intriguing twist: Velma called Zeke the ‘witch,’ but it was Zeb who wore the costume. If they switched costumes, this raises a question about who, in fact, was the witch among them.

8 The Ghost of Elias Kingston

In the story “What the Hex Going On?”, Elias Kingston’s spirit takes on an antagonistic role. When they meet him at their friend Sharon’s place, the group finds that he seeks control over the Wetherby family wealth. To achieve this, he places a spell on Stuart, Sharon’s uncle, causing him to rapidly age until there’s barely a skeleton left of him. Not long after, Sharon herself disappears mysteriously.

“I’ll Turn You To Bones!”

Yet, the group unmasks the phony spirit when they discover the camera he employs for his illusions, such as vanishing into a crystal ball. Following Sharon’s rescue, the mischievous kids decide to give the ghost a taste of his own medicine by employing some tricks of their own, one being a colossal Scooby-Doo figure.

In an unexpected twist, it’s revealed that the ghost was actually Stuart himself, orchestrating his own demise and abducting his niece. It seems he also often donned the guise of a local spiritual leader, which might have been useful for his escape. The audience never catches him in the act, but Scooby briefly takes his place. Interestingly, Stuart is one of the rare villains who doesn’t wear a mask; his ghost costume was created through makeup.

In ‘A Clue for Scooby-Doo’, the gang enjoys their evening at the beach but run into the ghost of Captain Cutler, a sailor who vowed retribution following an accident involving his boat hitting a yacht, leading to his tragic demise in the water.

The Ghost of Captain Cutler Turns Out To Be…Captain Cutler

Inside a lighthouse operated by Widow Cutler, Velma and Shaggy find themselves. It’s there that Velma discovers the woman delves into witchcraft. Not long after, the widow herself appears, asserting she had summoned her deceased husband using dark magic from the spirit world.

In an unexpected turn of events, it turned out that Cutler wasn’t really deceased from the start; instead, he feigned his own demise and impersonated a spirit to pilfer nearby yachts. His wife played along, feigning being a witch as part of their scheme.

6 The Fortune Teller

As they journey towards Franken Castle in “A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts”, the group first comes across a cryptic fortune-teller. She cautions them that the location is ghostly. True to her words, as they progress, the gang will confront malevolent, otherworldly entities. Upon arriving at the castle, they discover it’s inhabited by three distinct monsters: Count Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and the Wolfman.

“Evil Forces From the World of the Dead…”

It turns out that not only were all the monsters one person, but the initial fortuneteller was yet another of his disguises as well. Unmasked as “Big Bob Oakley,” this character was actually a criminal who sought the Franken family’s hidden treasure. Over time, he took on the alias, “The Actor,” due to his knack for assuming various personas. Interestingly, the voice for the fortuneteller was provided by actress June Foray.

5 The Puppet Master

In “The Backstage Rage,” when the group encounters a violin loaded with counterfeit cash, they surmise that the local theater must be implicated in some kind of counterfeiting scam. Later on, they stumble upon the Puppet Master. Initially, his tricks appear harmless: he deceives Scooby with a false poodle and frightens him using a spooky puppet of a witch.

The Phantom of the Puppet Show

In no time, the curious youngsters will need to recall they’re up against mere puppets when confronting a viking and pirate. Eventually, Scooby gathers his nerve to scare off the antagonist. Later on, the villain is revealed to be Pietro, the puppeteer, someone the group had encountered earlier disguised as a doorman.

In the story “Spooky Space Kook,” the main antagonist is called the Space Phantom. While traveling along a rural road, the group stumbles upon an eerie airbase that is said to be haunted by a spectral extraterrestrial. The Space Phantom quickly reveals himself with his chilling laughter, lent by none other than Don Messick, the original voice actor of Scooby.

“Moving Across the Sky Like an Evil Spirit…”

Interestingly, it was the very farmer who alerted the group about the monster who had the foresight to reach out to the local authorities first, due to his worries for the children’s safety. However, sticking to typical television tropes, the gang has already apprehended the villain before the sheriff arrives on the scene.

Turns out, the mysterious stranger in overalls at the edge of my farm was none other than Henry Bascomb, my neighbor with the secret agenda. I had no clue he’d been hiding his true identity throughout the story. It seemed that Bascomb had been playing a clever game all along – trying to scare us off and even disrupting the local air base, just so he could snatch their land at a bargain price, then sell it off to the government. Quite the cunning move!

3 The Ghost Clown

Season 1, Episode 10 – “Bedlam in the Big Top”

As a passionate moviegoer, let me share my take on describing the opening scene of “Bedlam in the Big Top”. The story kicks off with us on a road trip when we stumble upon some fugitive carnival workers fleeing from their circus. It turns out that there’s a spooky ghost clown terrorizing the show. Upon our arrival, an eerie clown mesmerizes Daphney, Scooby-Doo, and Shaggy with his hypnotic powers, compelling them to execute bizarre and hazardous tricks.

“Watch the Pretty Coin of Gold…”

With Shaggy being tasked to provoke lions and Scooby navigating tightropes, the Ghost Clown emerged as a menacing peril. Yet, the duo managed to put an end to him using a mirror, outsmarting him into self-hypnosis through this trick.

As it transpired, he was a former circus performer, specializing in hypnosis. After being apprehended for theft, he plotted his retribution by intending to sabotage the circus performance.

2 The Creeper

As they journeyed towards a barn dance titled “Jeepers, It’s the Creeper,” the group stumbled upon a man who had been assaulted by a spectral figure known as the Creeper. They carried him to the residence of a resident, Mr. Carswell, who happened to be a bank president. Upon arriving, Mr. Carswell informed them that the Creeper had been pilfering from his bank. Not long after, the sinister creature with green skin appeared at the dance to stir up mischief.

“The Flame Will Tell the Creeper…”

In due course, it becomes apparent that Carswell is the Creeper. He assaulted a security guard, having been filmed by the guard as he committed the act. It’s worth mentioning that this twist adds an extra layer of suspense upon rewatch: the gang actually led the man straight to, and abandoned him at the mercy of, his assailant. The local sheriff also commented that the guard was later found to have been saved from Carswell’s basement.

Through time, the character known as the Creeper has made appearances across various Scooby-Doo spinoffs, such as comics and advertisements. This villain is one of the series’ most recognized icons.

1 Charlie the Haunted Robot

Season 1, Episode 8 – “Foul Play in Funland”

In “Foul Play in Funland,” the group ventures into a theme park, only to encounter an issue with a robot called Charlie. Initially, it seems like Charlie was designed to assist with park operations by Mr. Jenkins, but somehow, this helpful automaton became hostile instead.

Not All Monsters Are Men In Masks…

In essence, since Charlie is a robot, we could say that he represents the unique twist in the Scooby-Doo series as the first mechanical menace. However, it’s important to note that Charlie didn’t instigate the scare at the park on his own. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that Jenkins’ sister, Sarah, had manipulated Charlie’s programming, with an aim to demonstrate the supposed danger of the park for children. By the end, Charlie’s original programming was restored, and he was shown affectionately patting Scooby-Doo.

Due to Sarah’s good intentions, the group notoriously chose to give her a pass. However, given the peril she put the group through, many viewers felt they were overly lenient with her. Interestingly, the Scooby-Doo movie “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” revises this, depicting her as imprisoned, much like the criminals the gang have previously apprehended.
