As a long-time fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I must say that the relationships between these characters are truly captivating. Each one showcases different aspects of love, camaraderie, and sacrifice – elements that make the MCU so special.
Back in 2012, “The Avengers” was an effortlessly popular group costume idea for Halloween. Gather six friends and you were set. Fast forward to today, it requires over 20 people to fill the roster, and even then, you might still be missing a few characters. With so many characters in play, it could be more enjoyable to team up with your best friend, significant other, family member, or child, and cosplay as one of the numerous duos within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
You can spend a fortnight debating which duo is better than which, so, before we start, here are some honorable mentions that could easily be considered a top-ten duo in the MCU: T’Challa & Shuri, Ant-Man & Louis, Natasha Romanoff & Yelena Romanoff, Loki & Mobius, Thor & Hulk, Iron Man & War Machine, Captain America & Bucky Barnes, Star-Lord & Gamora, Star-Lord &Thor, Tony Stark & Pepper Potts, Korg & Meek, and Cloak & Dagger.
Without further ado, here are our picks for the best duos in the MCU.
10 Thor & Loki
In a shift from their initial appearances in the first “Thor” film, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki embark on distinctly separate paths. Thor undergoes a personal growth journey, eventually transitioning into an Avenger, suffering eye loss, and even temporarily joining the Guardians of the Galaxy. Conversely, Loki attempts to seize the Asgard throne, becomes a villain in “The Avengers”, meets his demise three times, and ultimately gets hired by the TVA.
What Makes Them a Good Duo?
Growing up, Thor and Loki demonstrate the profound impact siblings can have on each other’s lives. Regardless of their contrasting life choices, they were inseparable due to sharing a childhood. Even when Loki appeared irredeemable, Thor never abandoned hope for his brother and extended a helping hand. In addition, they showed remarkable comedic chemistry in the film “Ragnarok”. The phrase “Get help” stands out as an ingenious diversionary tactic.
9 Drax & Mantis
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films have introduced some truly distinctive superheroes. Although Drax, being a powerful extraterrestrial, might not be the most captivating character on his own, his partnership with Mantis, an alien capable of controlling emotions through touch, is undeniably amusing. They first crossed paths in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and have since become an unstoppable force of humor that might just give Peter Quill and Gamora a headache or two!
Comedy That Keeps You Guessing
In the “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special,” this dynamic duo, Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff), embarked on a quest to find Kevin Bacon on Earth. It was quite amusing! Who would have thought we’d witness these two, known for their humor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, getting drunk at a club? But if there’s one constant with these characters, it’s that you can never predict what they’ll do next. Their unpredictable antics keep them among the funniest characters in the MCU.
8 Ant-Man & The Wasp
It was clear from the moment Paul Rudd was chosen for Ant-Man that his comedic talent and charisma would shine through in the character. The MCU required an actor who could not only complement Rudd’s humor but also match him wittily. Though losing Edgar Wright as director might have been a hurdle, casting Evangeline Lilly was undoubtedly the wise decision.
Tale as Old as Time, Beauty and the Dork
Rudd and Lilly complement each other wonderfully, making it seem as if they share a deep connection beyond their on-screen roles. Their interaction is so compelling that viewers might assume they have an off-screen romance. The most memorable scene between these two is from the first Ant-Man film where Hope van Dyne teaches Scott Lang to fight, delivering a powerful punch and effortlessly tossing him around as if he were a doll. Throughout the Ant-Man series, their heartfelt moments make them a standout pair in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
7 Doctor Strange & Wong
The duo comprising Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Wong (BD Wong) may seem to feature together quite infrequently on-screen, appearing in a mere four movies collectively, with one instance limited to just a single scene and dialogue line. However, it’s their bond within the Doctor Strange film series that has captivated fans, leaving them yearning for more of these intriguing interactions.
Turning a Good Kid Into a Wild Child
In the initial “Doctor Strange” film, Wong is portrayed as a strict librarian who approaches his job with the same dedication as Paul Blart. However, after developing a rapport with Strange and assuming the role of his right-hand man, it’s evident how the sorcerer has transformed the formerly upright Kamar-Taj guardian into a more lighthearted character. Wong becomes more jovial and ends up in some rather amusing predicaments, which Cumberbatch skillfully complements, creating an enjoyable partnership between them.
6 Shang-Chi & Katy
Many fans may rank Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as a middle-of-the-pack film in the MCU, which is honestly fair. The movie was pretty cookie-cutter as far as new superhero movies go. But what sets Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) apart from other MCU heroes is his relationship with his best friend Katy, played by Awkwafina.
A Refreshing Platonic Partnership
Shang-Chi and Katy exemplify an ideal platonic friendship, having been friends for ten years prior to the events depicted in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” Even as Shang-Chi’s life became chaotic with no end in sight, Katy bravely dove into the action, despite lacking superpowers or combat training. This was all due to their deep friendship and unwavering affection for one another. Additionally, their spontaneous decision to go to a karaoke night instead of acting like “responsible adults” is one of the funniest and most relatable moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
5 Iron Man & Spider-Man
It’s unfortunate that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man have only been in four movies together, as their on-screen dynamic is spot-on and reminiscent of Mike Ross and Harvey Specter from Suits if they were superheroes. Initially, it’s a mentor-mentee bond, but by the end, it evolves into something more akin to a father-son relationship.
The Son He Never Had, the Dad He Always Wanted
Collaboratively, Downey and Holland have delivered some of the MCU’s most hilarious one-liners. Their comedic interplay reached its zenith in Avengers: Infinity War, with their witty pop culture quips providing plenty of amusement. Yet, they have also presented heartfelt performances together, such as when Parker is snapped and when Stark perishes. Without a doubt, these two scenes are among the most poignant moments in the MCU.
4 Captain America & The Falcon
It’s likely that some fans might contend that Bucky Barnes, rather than Sam Wilson, should hold a significant place in Steve Rogers’ life. This viewpoint is understandable, given that Bucky stood by Steve before he became Captain America and wasn’t responsible for his transformation into a brainwashed assassin after being held captive as a prisoner of war. However, since Captain America outran the Falcon in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” their bond has been unbreakable ever since.
On Your Left
In this new world, Cap finds himself, and it’s Sam who stands by him. Bucky resurfaces, brainwashed and primed for conflict with Cap, but Sam remains steadfast alongside Steve. During their struggle in Civil War, even though Bucky had been an adversary in the previous film, Sam continues to support Steve. One of the most poignant moments comes from Avengers: Endgame, “on your left,” as Sam returns, even after being affected by the snap, to aid Steve. Their unwavering loyalty to each other is what makes them one of the strongest pairs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
3 Wanda & Vision
The love story MCU fans never knew they needed, Wanda and Vision are the textbook example of loving someone for who they are, and not how others view them. Their relationship may have been a surprise for those who didn’t read the comics, but source material or not, their relationship is one of the purest in the MCU.
Catchy TV Songs and a Beautiful Relationship
The strength of their romantic tale was so profound that Kevin Feige approved the production of WandaVision, widely regarded as one of the top MCU TV series thus far. In this series, we delved into the depths of Wanda’s grief following Vision’s demise. It’s hard not to empathize with her actions throughout the show. After all, she had to take the life of the man she loved and then bear witness to Thanos snuffing him out before her very eyes. The narrative poses the question: What lengths would one go to be with their beloved? It’s a tragic and intricate love story we hope will eventually culminate in a joyful resolution.
2 Hawkeye & Black Widow
In The Avengers movie, we finally got to witness the strong bond and chemistry between Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff, a relationship that had developed over many years while working for S.H.I.E.L.D. Prior to this, we only knew they’d been on missions together, but the depth of their connection wasn’t fully shown until then.
One of the Most Heartbreaking Moments in Avengers: Endgame
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but acknowledge the exceptional performances delivered by Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson. It’s hard to imagine anyone else stepping into their shoes for either role. Their scenes throughout the first two Avengers films and in Captain America: Civil War were truly unforgettable, but it was their heart-wrenching moments of mutual sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame that solidified them as one of the top duos within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
1 Rocket & Groot
Over the past decade, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans have shed tears countless times due to the emotional impact of characters like trees and raccoons. The duo of Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, and Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel, was first introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 and have since become fan favorites. Despite Groot’s limited vocabulary, comprising primarily of just three words, fans can’t get enough of this pair. Interestingly, Rocket takes on most of the dialogue, but as Marshawn Lynch would say, Groot is “all about that action, boss.
What Makes Them the Best Duo in the MCU
Their humorous interactions alone make them a standout pair in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but what truly sets them apart as the best duo is their unwavering loyalty towards each other, reminiscent of Captain America and Falcon. Consistently ready to risk their lives for one another, Rocket and Groot demonstrate this bond most poignantly in Guardians of the Galaxy, where Groot selflessly gives up his life for his companions. Even when Rocket begs him to reconsider, Groot responds with “We are Groot,” a testament to one of the most selfless acts in the MCU to this very day.
