As a seasoned aficionado of all things macabre and mysterious, I must say that these films have truly stirred my soul and tickled my fancy in equal measure! The Love Witch, with its technicolor aesthetic and 60s vibe, has certainly cast a spell on me. Its bizarre world and contemporary twists make it an intriguing watch indeed.
Horror-comedies offer viewers an enjoyable blend of two genres. They provide the thrill and mystery of a haunting, eerie setting that keeps viewers engaged, yet they are humorous enough to bring about occasional laughter. These movies manifest in various ways; some lean more towards dark humor while others mimic popular horror films outright. In fact, watching a parody can serve as a gauge for those unsure about diving into a full-fledged horror movie experience.

10 A Haunted House (2013)
In a newly inhabited dwelling, duo Malcolm and Kisha settle down together. As Kisha becomes increasingly apprehensive about the place being haunted, Malcolm sets out to disprove her fears using security cameras. However, he subsequently detects strange, otherworldly occurrences, leading him to either vacate or perform an exorcism. It turns out that Kisha had struck a bargain with the devil in exchange for some designer Louboutins.
The Very Last Exorcism
This movie adheres to the style commonly known as “found footage” reminiscent of movies like “The Devil Inside” and “Paranormal Activity.” Interestingly, the characters’ behavior in this horror flick deviates from typical portrayals. For example, instead of rushing into a haunted house right away, Malcolm is hindered by the market when he learns about it. The movie was later followed up with another installment titled “A Haunted House 2.
9 Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Invasion from the Cosmic Circus
The Greatest Show on Earth…Just Not *of* Earth
As a cinephile, I’ll confess that the title was deliberately outrageous, fearing it might be misunderstood as just another conventional slasher flick. Interestingly, this movie is the unique brainchild of the Chiodo Brothers, three special effects maestros who also spearheaded the makeup and visual effects, alongside other talented artists. Over time, it has garnered a devoted fanbase, giving rise to discussions about sequels or even a TV series. Regrettably, these ideas have been trapped in development limbo for years now.
8 Jennifer’s Body (2009)
In the movie titled “Jennifer’s Body“, shy and insecure girl named Needy shares a close friendship with the popular and assertive Jennifer. However, their bond is tested when Jennifer goes to an indie band’s concert. Strangely, Jennifer starts behaving abnormally, murdering and consuming boys from their school. It’s now up to Needy to uncover the truth about Jennifer’s transformation and bring an end to these grisly incidents for good.
She’s Evil… & Not Just High School Evil
The movie blends horror and comedy, but it doesn’t forget to incorporate traditional slasher scenes, particularly towards the climax. Notably, Jennifer has a lot to say in the film. Moreover, this film gained popularity due to a meme where Bill Fagerbakke’s character warns to sever someone’s “family jewels,” which resonated with fans because Fagerbakke is also known as the voice of Patrick Star from the cartoon series, SpongeBob SquarePants.
7 Creepshow 2 (1987)
Similar to its predecessor, “Creepshow 2” is a horror-comedy anthology film based on the works of Stephen King, featuring tales such as “Old Chief Wood’nhead,” “The Raft,” and “The Hitchhiker.” In this storyline, a young boy named Billy discovers an issue of Creepshow magazine, which serves as our framework. However, as events unfold, he finds himself tormented by bullies, all under the watchful eye of the Creep character.
When the Curtain Goes up, the Terror Begins
The movie occasionally uses dark humor, such as Billy’s retaliation against his tormentors being a notable example. Interestingly, Stephen King himself makes an appearance in the segment titled “The Hitchhiker.” It is said that the film was initially intended to be longer, but one unrealized story, “Cat from Hell,” was eventually incorporated into “Tales from the Darkside: The Movie” instead.
6 The Witches of Eastwick (1987)
According to the novel “The Witches of Eastwick,” penned by John Updike, this story centers around three close companions who don’t realize they possess magical powers. Following tragic separations from their respective partners, Alex, Jane, and Sukie frequently gather together. Nevertheless, strange occurrences start to unfold when an enigmatic man named Daryl settles in the town.
Something Wicked This Way Comes
The movie boasts an impressive ensemble, with Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer among its stars. It is also recognized for a memorable scene where Cher’s character, Alex, scolds Daryl, portrayed by Nicholson, following his attempts to charm her. In this particular sequence, Alex points out numerous flaws about Daryl, encapsulating it with the statement, “You’re not even intriguing enough to make me annoyed.
5 Meet the Blacks (2016)
In the movie titled “Meet the Blacks“, the Black family is shifting from their residence in Chicago, with father Carl determined to abandon his past as a street hustler. Upon arrival in Beverly Hills, they discover an unexpected twist: it’s the eve of the annual lawless night, where for a brief period, all criminal activities are temporarily sanctioned.
Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Move to Beverly Hills…
The movie primarily mimicked “The Purge,” but it turned out to be a hit at the box office, garnering $9 million on a minimal budget under one million. Furthermore, this success led to a follow-up film, “The House Next Door: Meet the Blacks 2.” In homage to “Fright Night,” this sequel finds the Black family revisiting Carl’s old home and coming across a character who could very well be a vampire disguised as a pimp.
4 The Love Witch (2016)
In the movie titled “The Love Witch“, we follow the story of Elaine, a captivating sorceress, who seeks to establish a fresh beginning in a welcoming, magical town following her husband’s demise. Eager to find love anew, she performs enchantments. Not long after, she crosses paths with Wayne, a college professor from the area. Regrettably, his life is cut short, and he won’t be the only one. As a police officer delves into the mystery of Wayne’s vanishing act, he finds himself increasingly drawn to Elaine.
Til Death Do We Part…
The movie, titled “The Love Witch,” is renowned for its vivid, colorful style, yet this contrasts with its somber narrative. Additionally, the film maintains a setting reminiscent of the 1960s, but subtle humor hints that the tale unfolds in modern times, such as a character employing a contemporary phone. Ultimately, it’s a film that has built a reputation for crafting a peculiar, unique world of its own.
3 Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)
In this unique production titled “Repo! The Genetic Opera“, we have a blend of genres, offering both gothic undertones in the form of an opera and dark humor that maintains a light-hearted tone. A global epidemic of organ failures has arisen, leading to an unprecedented surge in organ harvesting. Those who can’t keep up with their organ payments may encounter the less-than-desirable consequences of dealing with organ collectors.
Not Your Parents’ Opera
One such repo man finds himself keeping his daughter Shilo, who suffers from a rare blood disease from the world. Meanwhile, the biotech company running the organ transplants takes an interest in Shilo.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve watched this film grow an ardent fanbase over the years, frequently likening it to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” It’s impressive to see stars like Anthony Stewart Head, Alexa Vega, Sarah Brightman, and Paris Hilton on its cast list. What truly caught my attention was Paris Hilton’s performance; I must admit, I was taken aback by her acting skills.
2 Goosebumps (2015)
Drawing inspiration from R. L. Stine’s beloved series of children’s horror novels, the story in Goosebumps centers around Jack Black portraying Stine himself. In this tale, he teams up with his daughter Hannah and some local kids when Stine’s written stories unexpectedly spring to life. Not every one of Stine’s creations proves to be a villain though.
The Stories Come Alive
The audience has expressed various opinions regarding the movie due to its abundant connections to the books. Some fans humorously suggested that instead of the tales unfolding, this was a film about the book jackets themselves. Interestingly, the real R. L. Stine makes an appearance in the movie, portraying Mr. Black, a drama teacher.
The film later led to a follow-up titled “Goosebumps 2: A Haunting on Halloween,” where once more, Black portrayed Stine. In 2023, the Goosebumps series of books will also spawn a horror-comedy teen drama under the same name.

Elvira Makes Her Big Scream Debut
Elvira could need to employ some of her unique magical abilities to emerge victorious, provided she manages to steer clear of being labeled a witch first. In typical fashion, Peterson’s Elvira infuses the film with her signature humor and wit, as evidenced by numerous references and jokes that break the fourth wall. Ultimately, Elvira secures her blissful conclusion, highlighted by her Las Vegas show.
