As a devoted fan of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series, I find myself utterly captivated by the intriguing characters that populate these pages. Among them, former Master Sergeant Frances Neagley stands out as one of the most enigmatic and vital figures. Much like Reacher himself, she is an enigma wrapped in a riddle, her past shrouded in mystery.
The gripping Amazon Prime Video series Reacher has proven to be a significant success for the platform, serving as both a satisfying experience for fans of the IP and a notable change in direction. With Paramount Television closing its doors, it appears that this show has a promising, potentially far-reaching future ahead. The abundance of source material ensures that adaptations will continue to flourish. It’s worth noting that not all of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books lend themselves easily to adaptation, with some being complex in their tone and structure. The first two seasons have already demonstrated these differences.
If the show endures over time due to its high ratings, it will offer an exciting diversity of characters and storylines. Since there are numerous villains and secondary characters to select from in this series, this is certainly a possibility. As for Reacher, any character who isn’t him can be considered a supporting one. We’ll explore the most memorable supporting characters featured across the first two seasons.
10 Picard
Played by Martin Roach
While Season 1’s character Oscar Finlay embodies integrity as a respected law enforcement officer, his longtime friend Picard stands as his polar opposite. Under the guise of helping out, Picard is actually involved in the very activities that Finlay, Reacher, and Roscoe are chasing. In truth, Picard is part of the Kliners’ counterfeiting scheme.
False Face and Faux Altruism
Finlay summons Picard to safeguard Charlie Hubble, who is the wife of the accountant, Paul, who appears to be deceased. Paul had been exploited by the counterfeiting syndicate for their illicit tasks, leading him to go into hiding since then. Now, with KJ Kliner and Grover Teale, Picard aims to wrap up any remaining matters. His treachery is particularly noteworthy, and Martin Roach’s acting effectively conveys it.
9 Gaitano Russo
Played by Domenick Lombardozzi
At the heart of the Jack Reacher franchise lies the constant struggle to discern whom to rely on. Reacher operates independently, and his circle of trust is limited to those he’s worked with before, particularly members of the 111th unit. Occasionally, there emerges a person who appears untrustworthy and creates problems for Reacher, but upon closer inspection, this individual is merely pursuing the same justice as Reacher.
He’s A Pain, But His Heart’s In the Right Place
Gaitano Russo adheres strictly to his character. As a NYPD Detective probing the homicide of ex-110th MP Special Investigations Officer, Russo is blunt and tends to hinder Reacher, Karla Dixon, and David O’Donnell at times, with their initial encounter even causing Reacher to render him unconscious. However, over time, the other members of the 110th grow to reluctantly trust him, until his investigation ultimately results in his demise.
8 Shane Langston
Played by Robert Patrick
In the beginning, Shane Langston, formerly a detective with the NYPD, moved on to a higher-paying position as the Head of Security at New Age Technologies. Leveraging his background in corrupt law enforcement and connections, Langston discovered a project called Little Wing – a groundbreaking Surface to Air Missile system. His plan was to pilfer some of these missiles for sale, but when the 110th became aware of this scheme, Langston felt compelled to start jettisoning them from aircraft.
The Second Big Bad
It’s intriguing to contemplate how differently Shane Langston might have been portrayed if Rory Cochrane, known for his role in ‘Dazed & Confused’, had been cast instead of T2’s Robert Patrick. Although Patrick is more seasoned in playing villainous roles, Cochrane is equally versatile as an actor. As Langston becomes more central in Season 2, Patrick effectively brings out his cold-hearted character traits.
7 Grover Teale
Played by Bruce McGill
From reading “Persuader”, it’s clear that Season 3 might introduce a deceitful main antagonist, much like how “Killing Floor” set up the first season’s big bad. However, contrary to popular belief, Grover Teale is not the true villain, despite being the oldest of them all.
The First Secondary
In a different town, Margrave, Teale holds the title of Mayor. However, when the sun sets, he takes on a less honorable role as a significant player in KJ Kliner’s criminal organization. He may not be this season’s main antagonist, but his actions certainly qualify him as a villain. His character, portrayed by Bruce McGill, exudes an icy, insidious charm that is hard to miss. His seniority allows him to manipulate situations and divert attention away from Kliner’s criminal activities.
6 David O’Donnell
Played by Shaun Sipos
Similar to other individuals on this roster, David O’Donnell was associated with the 110th MP Special Investigations Unit led by Reacher. Alongside Reacher, Karla Dixon, and Frances Neagley, he participated in probing the deaths of his previous coworkers. On occasions, he utilized his legal expertise to aid their investigations. O’Donnell is not only an effective fighter but also possesses a witty sense of humor, often engaging in humorous exchanges with Reacher, whose stoic nature provides a stark contrast.
A Solid Teammate
Among the remaining 110th group members, O’Donnell stands out as the most friendly and approachable. He isn’t shy about teasing Reacher’s tactics or musical preferences, but he’s not just about jokes. He’s the kind of person Reacher would prefer to have by his side in a fight, which says a lot.
5 KJ Kliner
Played by Chris Webster
Regarding formidable villains, it may be challenging to surpass Season 1’s KJ Kliner. However, considering the close ties between Reacher and the antagonist in Season 3, Kliner will undoubtedly give him a tough fight for his well-earned reputation. It is important to note that Kliner was the one who murdered Reacher’s brother, Joe.
Smarmy to the Max
Regardless of which book it is, Joe’s death remains deeply etched in Reacher’s memory.
4 Karla Dixon
Played by Serinda Swan
If Ritchson continues to play Reacher for many years ahead, it’s likely that Serinda Swan, who portrays Karla Dixon, will reappear at some stage. In the 110th MP Special Investigations Unit, Dixon served as Reacher’s second-in-command, and she shares his destructive force. Moreover, she is the person who has come the closest to making Reacher consider settling down (as depicted in the books or series).
Unrequited Love, at First
In the first season, Reacher shares a sleeping arrangement with Roscoe Conklin. However, his relationship with Dixon is more of an ongoing development. Dixon had previously shown interest, but Reacher kept things strictly professional and rejected her advances. During their joint investigation into the deaths of some 110th members, they find themselves off-duty, leading to them becoming intimate for the first time. Although neither openly expresses it, there’s an undercurrent suggesting that this is significant. It also seems likely that neither will settle down or get married, but if they were to do so, it would be with each other.
3 Oscar Finlay
Played by Malcolm Goodwin
Oscar Finlay makes a great match for Reacher. Both are fish out of water, but Reacher is perpetually so. Finlay is a seasoned cop who takes the position of Chief of detectives in the Margrave Police Department, which is a place he’s warned he won’t be welcome.
By the Book
Initially, Finlay is wary of Reacher and sticks to the rules strictly. However, adhering to the rules signifies Finlay’s pursuit of justice, and he eventually realizes that Reacher shares this goal. Despite the pervasive corruption, Reacher is exposing it. If Finlay must endure his towering, burly counterpart’s confrontations, it seems to be the unavoidable reality.
2 Frances Neagley
Played by Maria Sten
In Lee (and Andrew) Child’s Jack Reacher series, only a small number of characters recur, but one of them is Master Sergeant Frances Neagley. Reacher doesn’t have many close connections, if any at all, but Neagley is an exception. He can rely on her to help him with cases he’s stumbled upon where some pieces are too difficult for him to fit together on his own.
Arguably the Book Series’ Second-Most Important Character
Similar to Reacher, Neagley is somewhat of a mystery. She dislikes physical contact intensely, but her reasons remain unexplored. She prefers not to discuss it, and Reacher refrains from inquiring. This shared silence allows them to operate seamlessly, as they both recognize and honor each other’s personal space.
In four Reacher novels – “Without Fail”, “Bad Luck and Trouble” (which served as the basis for Season 2), “The Affair”, and “Night School” – a character named Neagley appeared. Interestingly, she had a small part in Season 1 and will reappear in Season 3, suggesting that the series recognizes her significance and plans to increase her appearances more than the books do.
1 Roscoe Conklin
Played by Willa Fitzgerald
In the gripping series Reacher, Willa Fitzgerald delivers an exceptionally convincing, commanding portrayal that makes her character stand out. Interestingly, it’s not the title role who steals the show in the first season; instead, Roscoe Conklin, a police officer from Margrave Police Department, emerges as a strong contender. Like Finlay, she adheres strictly to the rules. However, unlike Finlay, she shows less initial apprehension towards Reacher, despite sharing his distaste for Reacher’s penchant for action before dialogue approach.
A Real Trooper
Conklin is genuinely likeable throughout, and her link to the case – as someone who had a deep affection for the victim and was also loved by them, who was tragically murdered by Grover Teale – adds an intriguing layer. Watching Conklin seek justice and find closure in this tale brings a sense of fulfillment.
On one side, Fitzgerald’s story in “Killing Floor” is fully told, and she only appeared in that book. However, if Maria Sten as Reacher’s co-star Neagley can enhance the series, there might be future opportunities for Fitzgerald, assuming her fame doesn’t suddenly soar to unmanageable levels (as it may) and scheduling conflicts don’t arise (as they often do).
