10 Best Villain Performances in ‘Dexter,’ Ranked

Considering its unusual plotline, it’s hardly shocking that the antagonists in the Dexter series were particularly captivating. The narrative revolves around Dexter, a character with a dark secret – he’s a serial killer – but one who adheres to a self-imposed rule set by his adoptive father, Harry, which stipulates that he should only kill other murderers.

In the series, Dexter, a fresh antagonist would emerge every now and then, with some sticking around for multiple seasons. These antagonists reveled in their inner darkness or appeared to yearn for being thwarted. Moreover, they varied greatly in their ability to blend into society, while others struggled to fit in. Despite their differences, what bound these villains was the exceptional acting talent portraying them.

Ray Stevenson

Isaak Sirko

In the seventh season, the character Isaac “The Wolf” Sirko emerged following Dexter’s execution of Isaac’s lover, Victor, as retribution for murdering Mike Anderson. A key figure in the criminal organization known as the Koshka Brotherhood, Isaac soon discovered that Dexter was responsible for Viktor’s demise and attempted to ambush Dexter in his apartment. In response, Dexter almost had Isaac eliminated by a Colombian drug cartel, resulting instead in Isaac serving prison time. Upon release, Isaac persistently pursued Dexter. However, the Brotherhood eventually turned against Isaac, seeking his elimination. Seizing an opportunity to collaborate with Dexter, Isaac abducted Dexter’s girlfriend, Hannah, in a bid to take down their common enemies. Despite this alliance, Isaac ultimately failed to escape his pursuers, and Dexter disposed of his remains at sea alongside Viktor.

Lessons in Love

Isaac’s personality played a crucial role in teaching Dexter the essence of love and courtship. Later, Isaac’s dedication to Victor served as a model for Dexter’s own devotion to Hannah, demonstrating that even someone with a dark past like a murderer could have deep feelings for others.

2023 sadly marked my farewell to Ray Stevenson, just a few days before his 59th birthday. Beyond his memorable role as Dexter, he leaves us with an impressive collection of performances, such as portraying the Punisher in ‘Punisher: War Zone’ and Titus Pullo in ‘Rome’.

9
Jimmy Smits

Miguel Prado

In Season 3 of the TV show “Dexter,” Miguel Prado served as one of the primary antagonists and a close confidant to the title character. Following an unfortunate incident where Dexter unintentionally killed his brother Oscar, Miguel unwittingly collaborated with him in search of the supposed (yet erroneous) murderer – a drug dealer named Freebo. Upon discovering Dexter slaying Freebo, Miguel did not show fear but instead expressed admiration and a wish to join Dexter in his dark deeds. However, their professional aspirations proved incompatible with “Harry’s Code,” leading Miguel to commit an unjustified murder of an innocent attorney, Ellen Wolf. In the end, Dexter took Miguel’s life before he could continue his violent rampage, despite Miguel’s insistence that they were friends.

Dexter’s First Friend

Prior to crossing paths with Dexter, I harbored a craving for power and had no qualms about letting an innocent man like Chicky Hines bear the brunt of a crime he didn’t commit. In fact, I used Dexter by feigning my intention to return evidence that could incriminate him in Freebo’s murder. It’s challenging to discern how genuine our friendship was versus me manipulating Dexter, but it appeared that he genuinely valued our bond until circumstances forced him to sever it. Subsequently, Jimmy Smits graced the screen in various other projects, such as Bail Organa in Rogue One and Nero in Sons of Anarchy.

8
Jonny Lee Miller

Jordan Chase

The primary antagonist in Season 5 was Jordan Chase, head of the Barrel Girl Gang. In his youth, he orchestrated his first malicious deed by persuading four companions to sexually assault their trainee counselor, Emily. Over time, he continued this gang’s criminal activities, which culminated in the deaths of twelve women. Additionally, Jordan gained a substantial following through his books and music, using them to inspire his supporters to seize whatever they desired.

Following the elimination of a Barrel Girl Gang member, Dexter located and liberated their most recent captive, Lumen Pierce. Working as a team, they trailed the remaining gang members, eventually overcoming all three others. Remarkably, they found Emily before Jordan seized Lumen. In a fortunate turn of events, Dexter rescued Lumen, who later avenged by killing Jordan, stating it was not just for her own sake, but for everyone he had harmed.

The Watch Guy

Jordan often teased his victims by placing a watch near their ear and remarking, “Tick, tick, tick… that’s the sound of your time slipping away.” Despite not participating in the assaults himself, he was present and served as the most intimidating figure among his group. He played a pivotal role in bringing them together and fostering their malicious actions, much like Dexter did with Lumen, although their paths led to vastly different outcomes.

Jonny Lee Miller didn’t only portray Jordan Chase, he’s played several other criminal characters as well. For instance, he starred as Dade Murphy in the movie “Hackers” and Captain Ruthven in “Byzantium”. These are just a few examples from his extensive acting career.

7
Jaime Murray

Lila West

In the second season of Dexter, the primary antagonist was Lila, an artist who struggled with a past addiction to meth and had a fascination with fire. Previously attending a Narcotics Anonymous meeting with Dexter, Lila recognized a kindred spirit in him. As his sponsor, their bond deepened and they spent more time together. When Dexter encountered Santos Jimenez, the killer of his mother, he lost control. However, Lila helped him regain composure. Over time, Lila grew concerned that Dexter was neglecting her affections, so she intentionally burned down her own loft and moved in with Dexter and his sister, Debra.

Starting from then, Lila’s chaos spiraled out of control. She guided Jimenez towards Dexter to assault him, falsely implicated Dexter’s coworker, Angel Batista, for a sexual assault he didn’t commit, and murdered a captured Doakes to safeguard Dexter’s secret. As she came to understand that Dexter intended to kill her, Lila intentionally set fire to her loft once more, with the aim of killing not only Dexter but also his girlfriend’s children, Astor and Cody. Fortunately, they all managed to escape. Later on, Dexter found Lila in Paris and fatally stabbed her.

The Death of Romance

Just as Isaac served as a change for Dexter in terms of his romantic experiences, Lila symbolized a new perspective on what his relationships might encompass. She appeared to grasp him on a level that his present girlfriend, Rita, never managed. Regrettably, their relationship ended disastrously, but not before imparting some crucial lessons to Dexter.

After playing Dexter, Jamie Murray has appeared in numerous other series and films such as The Originals, Gotham, and Fright Night 2: New Blood (unrelated to the Dexter: New Blood sequel).

6
Colin Hanks

Travis Marshall

Known more commonly as the “Doomsday Killer,” Travis Marshall held a belief that he, along with his professor James Gellar, were two prophesied figures who would usher in the apocalypse by completing a sequence of Doomsday Scenes. These scenes involved gruesome acts such as removing a victim’s intestines and replacing them with live baby snakes. At first, Dexter suspected that Gellar was responsible for the murders, while Travis merely assisted. However, it was later revealed that Travis had been experiencing severe psychological hallucinations, which inadvertently led him to kill Gellar and suppress the memory of the event.

Near the conclusion of season 6, Travis made an attempt to eliminate both Dexter and his son, Harrison. Unfortunately for him, he ended up becoming a victim on Dexter’s table of victims. In this instance, he was killed in full sight of Dexter’s sister, Debra, marking the demise of Travis and his inner darkness. This event also served to expose Dexter’s own Dark Passenger to those around him.

A Secret Revealed

Travis proved to be a pivotal moment for Dexter as he could no longer conceal his true identity. Interestingly enough, Travis was so adept at disguising himself that he didn’t fully comprehend the depth of his own shadowy nature. Colin Hanks, son of Tom Hanks, has garnered recognition through various roles, including the Fargo series and the Buddy Holly biopic, Clear Lake.

5
Kurt Caldwell

Clancy Brown

In the show “Dexter: New Blood,” viewers were introduced to Kurt Caldwell, who appeared friendly and helped runaway girls, but in reality, he imprisoned them in a hidden bunker and hunted them down. He would later preserve their bodies and display them as trophies. When Dexter killed his son Matt, who had been involved in a boating accident under the influence, Kurt became determined to seek revenge. However, merely killing Dexter wasn’t enough for him; he wanted to get his hands on Harrison, Dexter’s son too.

A Return to Form

Thankfully, Dexter managed to shield Harrison from Kurt, but not without a fight. Regrettably, before Kurt met his end at the hands of Dexter, he had already exerted an influence on Harrison’s sinister nature.

Notably, Clancy Brown is widely recognized for lending his voice to the character Mr. Krabs on SpongeBob SquarePants. Additionally, he has graced popular shows like The Penguin and Gen V with his presence.

4
Yvonne Strahovsky

Hannah McKay

In Season 7, Hannah McKay made her debut as Miami Metro sought her assistance regarding a crime spree from 15 years prior. Initially, she maintained that chapter of her life was closed, but Dexter uncovered that she had been involved in a series of lethal poisonings instead. Recognizing her as a murderer, he initially intended to end her life, but at the last moment (with her already on his kill table), he opted for a romantic involvement instead. The situation became increasingly complex when Debra believed Hannah had escaped justice for multiple murders, urging Dexter to eliminate her. Matters grew even more convoluted when Hannah attempted to assassinate Deb herself.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the intricate plot twists of Dexter. To shield my sister, I orchestrated Hannah’s arrest for murder, but she cleverly broke free from prison confines. In Season 8, she resurfaced, seeking my aid to eliminate her abusive spouse, Miles Castner. Post his demise, we rekindled our relationship and envisioned a new life in Argentina, far from our old haunts. Regrettably, I was compelled to vanish at the series’ end, leaving Hannah under the impression that I was no more. Believing me deceased, she secretly raised our son Harrison. Tragically, before the unfolding of New Blood, she succumbed to pancreatic cancer, and Harrison was placed in foster care.

A Different Kind of Villain

Hannah stands apart from other killers on this list in a unique way. Unlike most, Dexter himself wouldn’t classify her as a villain due to their romantic relationship (unlike his connection with Lila, who tried to harm him). Moreover, she asserted that she didn’t find pleasure in taking lives but did so out of necessity – whether this claim was genuine or not is left for the viewers to decide.

Yvonne Strahovsky has taken on some remarkable characters since her time on Dexter. Most notably, she portrayed the intricate, antagonistic character Serena Joy Waterford in The Handmaid’s Tale and more recently starred in the chilling horror-thriller known as Teacup.

3
Christian Camargo

Brian Moser

In the crime drama series “Dexter,” Brian Moser, infamously known as the Ice Truck Killer, served as the initial primary antagonist. Prior to his appearance in the show, he and Dexter had been separated following their mother’s murder, an event that left him with profound psychological and emotional wounds. Upon entering the series, Brian disguised himself as Rudy Cooper, a man he had killed, to establish a relationship with Debra, Dexter’s sister. He was fully cognizant of Dexter’s killing nature, finding great delight in it. His main objective was to drop hints about his true identity so that Dexter would uncover the truth and acknowledge the full depth of his own sinister side.

Over time, Brian persisted in murdering and dismembering his victims (occasionally creating prosthetics for them), eventually leading Dexter to discover his true nature. Shortly thereafter, Brian seized Debra with the intention of jointly killing her, thereby discarding Dexter’s past life and welcoming a new one alongside his sibling. However, Dexter was unable to kill Deb, instead choosing to eliminate Brian by simulating suicide – draining him of blood in the same manner he had done to his victims.

The Real Dark Passenger

Christian Camargo reprised the role of Brian in season 2, where his character haunted a mourning Dexter, and again in Season 6 when Dexter visualized him as a representation of his Dark Passenger. Following these appearances, he has acted in numerous films, including “The Twilight Saga,” and TV shows such as “Elementary” and “House of Cards.

2
John Lithgow

Arthur Mitchell

Growing up, Arthur Mitchell experienced the tragic and untimely demise of his sister, followed by his mother’s suicide and father’s murder (an incident that might have been orchestrated by him). Post-college, he worked with Four Walls One Heart constructing homes, which later served as a disguise for his lethal routines. These routines invariably included the killing of a woman in a bathtub, inciting another woman to take her own life, and brutally assaulting a man, hence earning him the moniker “The Trinity Killer.” What the police didn’t know was that Arthur’s routines also encompassed the kidnapping and burial of a ten-year-old boy.

In a turn of events, Dexter discovered Arthur’s criminal activities and planned to eliminate him. However, upon learning about Arthur’s prosperous family life, his curiosity grew, leading him to get nearer to Arthur, assuming the identity of Kyle Butler. Being a devout man, Arthur believed that “Kyle” was sent to help him find salvation. Little did he know, Dexter had other intentions until he actually saved Arthur from suicide. Yet, this incident disturbed Dexter’s usual pattern of killing and family life, causing Arthur to uncover Dexter’s true identity. In retaliation, Arthur murdered Dexter’s wife, Rita, before eventually meeting his end at the hands of Dexter himself.

The Final Kill Cycle

In Arthur’s serial killings, each victim served as a symbolic representation – himself, his sister Vera, and his parents. The last victim, Rita, encapsulated them all. She was murdered in a bathtub like Vera, was a mother of two, much like Arthur’s mom, and met her end in front of Harrison just before Arthur suffered the same fate. Viewers can anticipate uncovering more chilling details about the Trinity Killer and his cycle in the upcoming prequel series. While not as sinister as Arthur, John Lithgow has portrayed other characters such as Lord Farquaad in Shrek and Eric Qualen in Cliffhanger.

1
Michael C. Hall

Dexter Morgan

In essence, the central character of our story, Dexter, was a unique serial killer; he targeted fellow killers, but deviated from this pattern occasionally. Numerous instances across the series saw him succumb to his sinister nature and take the lives of innocents. On other occasions, he unintentionally caused their deaths (like Rita), spawned new killers (such as Miguel), or inflicted pain on those who loved him deeply (Deb, Hannah, his son, etc.). However, it was Dexter’s conviction that Harry’s Code made him superior to other villains that set him apart.

Worst Villain, Best Performance

In a remarkable performance, Michael C. Hall’s acting skills were so convincing that numerous spectators doubted Dexter was the antagonist. In reality, it could be argued that Dexter represented one of the most despicable villains ever portrayed. Contrary to popular belief, it appears that Dexter didn’t meet his end in New Blood. Instead, fans of the show were overjoyed to discover that he had somehow survived, and they eagerly await more of Hall’s exceptional acting in Dexter: Resurrection.
