I must say, the talent and depth these two gentlemen have brought to their respective roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is nothing short of astounding! Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin and Jon Bernthal as The Punisher are indeed the cream of the crop when it comes to portraying these iconic characters.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been blessed with exceptional acting talent across its various platforms, both big and small screen. With the arrival of “Agatha All Along”, it’s a great time to revisit the most memorable villains from Marvel’s TV series. This is because Kathryn Hahn’s performance as Agatha Harkness is nothing short of remarkable and deserves recognition, as her captivating portrayal has led to a spin-off or sequel series being developed for her character.
It’s important to highlight that by 2024, the discussion regarding the Defenders universe of shows has been conclusively resolved, with these shows now recognized as integral parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Here are some standout villainous acting performances across various levels of enthusiasm in MCU television series, ranging from Netflix to Disney+.
10 Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness
WandaVision (2021)
As the actress portraying Agatha Harkness in WandaVision, I’ve had the pleasure of bringing this complex character to life. With her knack for manipulating others for amusement and retribution, it might seem challenging to make her likable. But that’s exactly what I strive to do, and it’s my performance that helps the series’ surprising twist involving Agatha resonate so effectively with viewers.
A Legend
The interaction between “Is there a chance I should do it over?” is what she has with Wanda and Vision, and Hahn’s performance leaves viewers wondering about the plot just like Agatha confuses Wanda about her own reality…created by Agatha herself within a fictitious town. WandaVision stands out as one of the MCU’s most impressive projects to date, and it remains the top MCU series on Disney+, with much of its success attributed to Hahn’s powerful acting skills.
9 Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow
Moon Knight (2022)
Moon Knight, a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production, sparked some controversy but had aspects that fans agreed upon. One undeniably was Oscar Isaac’s portrayal of the main character. Additionally, Ethan Hawke’s performances as Arthur Harrow were highly appreciated by many viewers.
Hawke Is Amazing Per Usual
Similar to Isaac, Hawke assumes multiple roles in a fascinating manner. Primarily, he portrays Arthur Harrow, but at times, he assumes the role of Marc Spector’s therapist. This duality leaves viewers as bewildered as Spector himself, as Hawke masterfully portrays intelligence and gentleness, making it plausible for audiences to imagine him as a therapist, just as his charisma makes them believe he could lead a cult.
8 Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth
Luke Cage (2016)
In a more simplified and conversational manner: It’s tough to feel sad about the demise of a despicable villain like Mahershala Ali’s character in Luke Cage. However, his exceptional acting skills make it possible. His portrayal of Cottonmouth, the head of the Stokes Crime Family, transforms a typical power-hungry gangster into an almost invincible figure on screen.
One of the Best in the Business
But, of course, he wasn’t invincible. Yet, it stands that his performance was the best part of Luke Cage, no disrespect to Mike Colter, who was very much likable in the title role and magnetic in his own right. It’s easy to see why the MCU decided to keep Ali on board, even if his role as Blade has yet to work its way out of production difficulties.
7 Alaqua Cox as Echo
Hawkeye (2021)
If there’s a character who comes close to matching Agatha Harkness as the top villain in an MCU Disney+ series, it’s undoubtedly Echo from Hawkeye. Her acting skills are equally remarkable and can stand alongside that of Vera Farmiga (Hahn). Given that Alaqua Cox was making her on-camera debut for the very first time, the depth she brings to Echo is nothing short of astonishingly impressive.
Genuinely Incredible for a First-Time Performance
Similar to Harkness, Echo starred in her own separate series, and just like Harkness, Cox’s powerful performance was not unexpected. Born Deaf and having had her right leg amputated, Cox is of Native American descent and gained recognition in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following a single interrogation scene. In this role, she not only created an incredibly imposing lower-tier (not capable of raising a city from the ground then destroying it) villain but also expanded the diversity within the MCU.
6 Wyatt Russell as John Walker
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
In a remarkable demonstration of his skills, Wyatt Russell has convincingly shown that he possesses the same level of talent as his esteemed parents, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Given their illustrious careers, this is no mean feat. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before he secured a role in a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project. Interestingly, the role that eventually came his way was John Walker, who was slated to take over as Captain America’s replacement.
Couldn’t Walk the Walk
As a movie reviewer, I found myself deeply immersed in the complexity of Walker’s character in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” The show skillfully highlights his violent tendencies, which have become his public persona. However, this facet of his character doesn’t fully encompass his depth.
5 Jonathan Majors as He Who Remains
Loki (2021)
In recent years, Jonathan Majors has encountered some difficulties, yet there was a period when he was being earmarked as a significant figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). His role was expected to play a pivotal part across multiple phases of the series. Regardless of personal opinions towards him, it’s challenging not to acknowledge his exceptional talent as an actor.
Several Roles Wrapped up in One
Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, leaving Majors’ fans with only a speech in Loki’s first season, an antagonist role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and a portrayal of He Who Remains, a Kang variant, during Loki’s second year. However, even in this brief period, viewers got a glimpse of the incredible versatility Majors could bring to Kang and all his variants. He’s a master of disguise, and the monologue at the end of Loki Season 1 was enough to convince us that he could make an impressive villain capable of challenging the Avengers.
4 Michael Douglas as Yellowjacket
What If? (2021)
Regarding Corey Stoll’s portrayal of Hank Pym, I must say that Michael Douglas delivers an exceptional performance as Yellowjacket in the movie “What If?” The character of Hank Pym in this alternate universe experiences a different loss – it’s his daughter, Hope, who passes away instead of his wife. This heartbreaking event strips him of all hope, mirroring the transformation of his protégé into the antagonist we see in the main MCU timeline.
A More Memorable Yellowjacket
By doing this, Yellowjacket transforms into a character of deeper complexity. Darren Cross, on the other hand, appears primarily as selfish, overly ambitious, and devoid of genuine creativity. The portrayal of Yellowjacket in Pym’s hands, however, evokes intense sorrow. And it’s Douglas’ voice that convinces us of this.
3 David Tennant as Kilgrave
Jessica Jones (2015)
Often hailed as one of the standout Netflix Marvel productions, Jessica Jones gained its reputation primarily through its distinctive, noir-inspired atmosphere and outstanding performances. Krysten Ritter delivers a compelling portrayal in the lead role, but many found that the truly exceptional performance came from David Tennant as Zebediah Kilgrave. This enigmatic character, with a severely warped moral compass, demanded an actor of Tennant’s intellectual depth to bring him to life.
Great As Always
The effectiveness of Tennant’s portrayal lies in how he easily captures Kilgrave’s irresistible charm, given that he manipulates minds for frequently sinister goals. This feat is impressive indeed. Moreover, Tennant convincingly portrays Kilgrave’s fixations, a crucial aspect to underscore his true wickedness. Here’s crossing fingers that both Tennant and Ritter will be featured in an official Marvel Cinematic Universe project someday.
2 Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin
Daredevil (2015), Hawkeye (2021), & Echo (2024)
Among the formidable villains in Netflix’s Marvel era, Vincent D’Onofrio from “Daredevil” stands out as one of the most menacing. Similar to Charlie Cox, he was among the earliest Netflix stars to join an MCU project, specifically Hawkeye. It’s not hard to understand why, given that D’Onofrio delivers the most compelling portrayal of the character thus far.
A Layered Portrayal
That’s no small compliment, considering Michael Clarke Duncan made the character a force in the Daredevil movie and Liev Schreiber voiced him with gravitas in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. But it’s D’Onofrio who has made his portrayal less just Kingpin, and more Wilson Fisk. He’s a layered character with a tough upbringing, and D’Onofrio makes the audience believe Fisk carries that with him day to day.
1 Jon Bernthal as The Punisher
Daredevil (2015)
Despite The Punisher not having a highly successful project as yet, numerous gifted actors have portrayed this character remarkably well. Notably, Dolph Lundgren was the first to take on the role, but it’s the performances of Thomas Jane, the late Ray Stevenson, and Jon Bernthal that truly stand out.
Bernthal Beats All
After portraying the loathed Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead, Bernthal has gained considerable recognition. He exudes charisma in abundance, yet effortlessly slips into unsympathetic roles. This versatility is what makes him an ideal Punisher for Marvel, as the character is multifaceted and unapologetic about his actions, yet believes he’s always right. Balancing such a complex role requires skill, and it’s fortunate that the MCU has retained Bernthal for this task, given his ability to navigate that delicate tightrope.
