ATTENTION: The information in this article reveals major plot points from Creature Commandos Season 1. If you haven’t finished watching the series and still decide to read on, please remember that I’m only providing a heads-up, not intentionally spoiling it for you. Enjoy!
Frankly speaking, though I’ve always appreciated comic book adaptations, particularly those based on DC characters, and have long been a fan of James Gunn’s work, I never thought I’d become so excited about Creature Commandos. However, Season 2 of this series is one of the upcoming DC TV shows I’m looking forward to the most.
The animated series unique to Max subscribers, featuring peculiar characters like the Bride of Frankenstein and Dr. Phosphorous who tackle uncommon challenges, has been renewed for a second season not too long ago. Unfortunately, details about Season 2 are scant at present, so I have some questions regarding it. However, before we dive into those, let’s discuss the hints left in the final episode and what we might surmise from that.
What We Know About Creature Commandos Season 2‘s New Recruits
In the final episode of Season 1 for the “Creature Commandos”, it was Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), the most compassionate member of Task Force M, who suffered a heartbreaking fate. However, as the story unfolded, it was also revealed that not only would G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn) be restored, but the team is planning to bring in extra help. To discover more about these new allies before Season 2 begins, you can explore their stories within the pages of DC Comics.
Nosferata
It’s not hard to surmise that, given the resemblance between her name and the title of an old horror movie called “Nosferatu” (a more recent adaptation of which is Robert Eggers’ version), Nosferata is indeed a vampire. This character was brought into existence by Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett, and she debuted in a 1998 issue of Superboy. Notably, she has been seen to collaborate with a gorilla-like creature known as Killa.
Khalis
Given that Team M is introducing a vampire character, it’s logical to assume they would also consider recruiting another classic horror figure, like the mummy Khalis from Jeff Lemire and Alberto Ponticelli’s work. The reanimated Egyptian has undergone various adaptations, but the one possibly appearing in Season 2 was initially featured in a 2011 comic book series of Creature Commandos, which also included Nina Mazursky and was overseen by Frankenstein’s Monster.
King Shark
One fresh addition to Task Force M could be Prince Nanaue, also known as King Shark, who might be recognizable to viewers of recent DC films. In 2021’s “The Suicide Squad”, he was given voice by Sylvester Stallone. Similar to the character Nosferata, this anthropomorphic sea predator was brought to life by Karl Kesel and initially appeared as a Superboy antagonist in 1994. In James Gunn’s adaptation, King Shark is portrayed as a childish, playful, and somewhat misunderstood character, much like some of the other Creature Commandos.
Questions I Have About Creature Commandos Season 2
After discussing a few details regarding the characters from Creature Commandos Season 2 that have been verified, let’s explore some possibilities.
Will Creature Commandos Season 2 Stick To The Same Narrative Structure?
The first season of “Creature Commandos” unfolded a central narrative thread while gradually unveiling the poignant pasts of its primary characters through scattered flashbacks across each episode. For season 2, maintaining this structure with the fresh characters hinted at in the finale is a possibility. Yet, with only three new additions to the team, it also provides an opportunity to delve deeper into the main storyline, which I feel could make for an even more engaging experience.
Is This The Last We Have Seen Of Circe?
Many viewers on social platforms have shared their feelings that despite loving the show, they felt the seven-episode narrative moved too quickly towards its conclusion. I find myself in agreement with this assessment, as the storyline featuring Circe (Anya Chalotra), who essentially vanished after three episodes, seemed to lack depth and resolution.
It’d be great if Task Force M embarks on a fresh journey for Season 2, but first, it could be beneficial to explore the goddess’s resolution… unless Gunn has alternate plans for her within the DC Universe.
Will Eric Frankenstein Ever Officially Join The Team?
Upfront admission: I find the portrayal of Frankenstein’s Monster, or “Eric,” in this series extremely challenging for me on a personal note. To put it simply, he strikes me as an overly proud and boorish character who stubbornly denies the lack of romantic connection with The Bride (Indira Varma).
In spite of the circumstances, it was pleasing to discover, as hinted by a post-credits sequence, that the revived beast (voiced by David Harbour) managed to withstand The Bride’s gunfire. Given his encounters with Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), I believe he could prove valuable to Task Force M, if they can find common ground and work together.
Will Sylvester Stallone Return As King Shark?
Based on Forbes, Diedrich Bader – known for his exceptional voice acting work, including portraying Batman among other DC characters – voiced King Shark in the final episode of Creature Commandos. Given that Sean Gunn is back to voice Weasel and Steve Agee plays John Economos, while Viola Davis continues as Amanda Waller, it makes me speculate if Diedrich Bader’s role was a temporary replacement until Sylvester Stallone can return as his character from The Suicide Squad. Neither Sean Gunn nor the Academy Award-nominated actor have provided any comments on this matter yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
Will Any Other Established DCU Characters Appear?
In “Creature Commandos”, we initially caught a glimpse of the modern interpretations of traditional DC Universe characters, like the brief appearance of Batman in Episode 6. It leaves me curious whether the series will introduce other characters that we’ve previously encountered.
Could it be that David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman in the upcoming DC film might pop up in Season 2 of “Creature Commandos” as well? If not, it would make for an interesting twist to see Milly Alcock’s take on Clark Kent’s cousin from the future “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” (2026) or Jason Momoa’s long-anticipated Lobo character, who will also appear in that upcoming superhero film.
Will Weasel Receive The Justice He Deserves?
In my opinion, the fourth installment, titled “Playing with Squirrels,” struck a particularly poignant chord within me as it portrayed Weasel in a new light, revealing his selfless attempt to save the kids he had been falsely accused of harming, leaving me deeply moved and almost unable to console myself.
The installment subtly suggests an attempt to clear his name, an endeavor I fervently hope he and his attorney (portrayed by Linda Cardellini) will successfully accomplish, though it might undermine the show’s intended purpose of exposing unresolved wrongs in reality. Nonetheless, it would be immensely uplifting to witness him acknowledged as a hero, and I am not surprised that he rescued Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova), given she was ultimately revealed as the main antagonist.
The Creature Commandos animated show has swiftly climbed up my list of preferred contemporary TV series, igniting even greater anticipation for the future of the DC Universe. Fervently hoping that Season 2 lives up to expectations and truly delivers an extraordinary season.
