The galaxy of Star Wars teems with extraordinary characters, exotic aliens, and beloved droids. Though the series is famed for its iconic figures such as Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and Han Solo, it doesn’t shy away from showcasing its endearing side. After all, George Lucas envisioned Star Wars as a cosmic fairy tale meant for children, which explains the abundance of charming characters amidst the more fearsome ones.
Some people might try to overlook this part of Star Wars, but these adorable characters are essentially woven into the fabric of Star Wars. After all, George Lucas had a knack for merchandising and promotion; he wouldn’t have held onto merchandising rights during the initial Star Wars deal if that wasn’t the case. Throughout the franchise’s close-to-half-century lifespan, many fan-loved characters have brought smiles to viewers’ faces. These 10 Star Wars characters could make even the most serious Jedi melt with cuteness.
10
Babu Frik
Many fans found Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker disappointing, but there was one character that everyone seemed to agree on – Babu Frik. While D-O, the adorable droid, was supposed to steal the show in the last film of the Skywalker Saga, it was actually Babu Frik who won over audiences’ hearts instead. This Anzellan character, with a unique knack for machine repair, was voiced by Shirley Henderson, most recognized as Moaning Myrtle from the Harry Potter movies. It was Babu Frik’s distinctive vocal pattern that truly set him apart.
In the movie “The Rise of Skywalker”, although Babu Frik may not have had a large part, he certainly left a lasting impact – this is according to Steven Spielberg who expressed his fondness for the character. Neal Scanlan, the Creature Effects Creative Supervisor, shared with Empire that after showing Spielberg a cut of the film, he inquired about Babu Frik’s fate following the destruction of Kimiji. To appease Spielberg, J.J. Abrams included Babu Frik’s final scene where he reappears alongside Zori Bliss and exclaims “heyhey!” This charming character became so beloved that his species was later incorporated into “The Mandalorian” alongside Grogu, resulting in an excessive dose of cuteness.
9
Yoda
In a way that might surprise some newer fans who see Yoda as a cool and powerful figure from the prequel trilogy, it was actually Yoda in “The Empire Strikes Back” who captured hearts with his endearing charm. Despite being an unassuming creature, Yoda proved himself to be a formidable Jedi Knight, which added to his allure. His great wisdom and the fact that people don’t judge him by his size are features that make Yoda even more beloved.
Fans adored Yoda, with his walking stick, small stature, and jovial grandpa charm. The magical blend of Frank Oz’s powerful vocal performance, a skilled team of puppeteers under Oz’s guidance, and Mark Hamill’s convincing acting made Yoda seem incredibly real. It was undeniable that audiences were moved to tears when Yoda clutched his small blanket in Return of the Jedi and closed his eyes for the last time.

Ewoks
Star Wars’ Ewoks, first appearing in ‘Return of the Jedi’ in 1983, have been a subject of debate due to differing opinions about what might be tarnishing the franchise. These cute, teddy bear-like creatures inhabiting the forest moon of Endor were instrumental in helping the Rebel Alliance conquer the Empire. The popularity of the Ewoks among young viewers led George Lucas to further expand the Star Wars universe post-original trilogy, with a television movie called ‘Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure’ in 1984 and ‘Ewoks: The Battle for Endor’ in 1985, as well as an animated series.
Ewoks have frequently faced criticism for suggesting that George Lucas prioritized merchandise over storytelling, as if the toy deals weren’t already in place from the start. However, it’s important to remember that while they may appear cuddly and adorable, these small creatures are just as fierce and potentially terrifying, given their intention to consume Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Chewbacca. Moreover, it’s hard not to feel a pang of sorrow in Return of the Jedi when one Ewok attempts to rouse his companion, only to find him lifeless – a genuinely moving moment indeed.
7
BD-1
In the expansive Star Wars universe, there are plenty of adorable droids, and one that quickly captured hearts was BD-1 from the video games Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel, Jedi: Survivor. This droid, a companion to the game’s main character, Cal Kestiss, became popular as soon as he was introduced. Interestingly enough, “BD” in his name stands for “Buddy Droid,” adding another reason for fans to grow fond of this helpful sidekick.
In contrast to numerous other robot companions found in the Star Wars universe, BD-1 stood out with his bipedal legs, resembling more of an adorable mechanical pet. His appeal transcended video games, prompting Disney to manufacture BD-1 toys and even spotting these droids strolling around Galaxy’s Edge at their Star Wars-themed park. The charming BD-1 has become a highly sought-after companion. With the customization feature in Jedi: Survivor that allows fans to modify BD-1’s color and attributes, fans have developed a deep connection with this unique Star Wars character they can personalize, further fueling his popularity.

Nubs
Nubs, without a doubt, is one of the sweetest Jedi characters in a distant galaxy. This charming character was first introduced on Disney Jr.’s series Young Jedi Adventures. Nubs is a young Jedi during the time of the High Republic and belongs to the Pooba species, an alien group with blue fur resembling both koala bears and the fluffiest teddy bears, standing at only 2 feet 5 inches tall.
In the Star Wars universe, Nubs communicates not in Basic, but through growls and whistles that are comprehensible to other characters. This method of communication is reminiscent of Chewbacca’s roars. The way Nubs talks mimics a child learning to talk, making him appealing to the preschool audience of Young Jedi Adventures while also stirring a protective instinct in parents who watch with their children. Due to his cuteness, Nubs has gained a fan base beyond the core demographic of Young Jedi Adventures.
5
R2-D2
Among all characters on this list, R2-D2 was the earliest, predating even the Ewoks and Nubs. This little blue and white astromech droid has been a part of the Star Wars universe since its inception, specifically Episode IV: A New Hope. R2-D2 is one of the most recognized figures in the Star Wars franchise, sharing popularity with Darth Vader, and possibly being among the most merchandisable characters. Over the years, he has remained a beloved figure for fans of all ages.
Ben Burt, a sound designer, patterned R2-D2’s distinctive beeps and bloops after the sounds a toddler might make, which could explain why this beloved character from Star Wars resonates so strongly with young kids. As Ewan McGregor put it while filming the prequel trilogy, “When R2-D2 shows up on set, everyone gets a little goofy. There’s just something about him that stirs up warmth and affection in us.” It’s hard not to feel a burst of joy when R2-D2 appears on screen.
4
Porgs
Initially, it’s worth mentioning that Porgs hold a significant charm. If Finn and the Caretakers had been accompanied by a swarm of these adorable creatures in “The Rise of Skywalker”, the movie could have benefited by approximately 10%. However, let’s move on. Making their debut in the second installment of the sequel trilogy, “The Last Jedi”, Porgs are an endearing small bird-like creature indigenous to the planet Ach-To. They boast large, expressive eyes, plump bodies, and tiny wings that seem insufficient for their form. As such, Porgs stand as one of the most delightful enhancements to the “Star Wars” universe.
The Porgs were invented as a solution to the large number of real puffins at Skellig Michael, the filming location for Ahch-To. Instead of erasing them digitally, these fascinating alien creatures with bird-like features were created to blend into the background scenes. They became an amusing addition to the plot, contributing to some of the film’s most humorous moments. In the final scene of The Force Awakens, if Star Wars still released digital re-edits, the original non-Porg puffins would probably now be replaced with Porgs.
3
Neel
Neel, the latest character from the Star Wars universe, has been added to our list. A key member of the impressive cast in the acclaimed story “Skeleton Crew“, Neel differs from Max Reebo, an Ortolan, in terms of species, as his specific type remains unspecified. Despite this mystery, fans are captivated by Neel, eagerly consuming any content about what makes him exceptional. Week after week, it becomes apparent that Neel outshines many other characters on the list, showcasing unique qualities that set him apart.
Neel is a character who the audience has become acquainted with, and his charm transcends his amiable, gentle appearance. He seems like a relatable youngster; he’s compassionate, and possesses a kind spirit. His concern extends beyond his friends and family to unknown individuals. He shares his food with starving children because he understands their need for it.
Neel’s power stems from his aversion to violence. Unlike other characters who might resort to it, and even the Jedi don’t shy away from tough negotiations, Neel stands out as a character who goes to great lengths to prevent conflict. His innocent faith that conflicts can be resolved by apologizing challenges us to ponder if perhaps a world where such simple rules were followed would be a better place. Neel is a pacifist ruler and a character that “Star Wars” enthusiasts eagerly anticipate seeing more of in the future.

BB-8
On November 28, 2014, Disney unveiled the initial teaser trailer for The Force Awakens. The internet buzzed instantly as people scrutinized the 88-second clip. Amidst the excitement over the Millennium Falcon and the controversy surrounding Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber, a small, orange and white droid with an astromech-like head on a round body caught everyone’s attention. This was our first glimpse of BB-8, and ever since then, he has won hearts everywhere.
During the 2015 holiday season, BB-8, the adorable droid from “The Force Awakens,” turned out to be one of the hottest items on the market. Notably, “The Force Awakens” was released just a week before Christmas that year. The Star Wars franchise of 2015 held the top spot in merchandise sales, with toys raking in close to $700 million. This surge significantly increased overall U.S. toy sales, which reached $19.4 billion, marking a 6.7% increase from the previous year. It’s reasonable to assume that BB-8-themed toys, t-shirts, bags, and other merchandise contributed greatly to these impressive figures. However, it wasn’t the last time Disney would capture audiences’ hearts with a new Star Wars character, as the story was far from over.
1
Grogu
Who else did you believe was going to be referred to as Grogu, the beloved Star Wars character often nicknamed “Baby Yoda” by fans?
Whenever a new episode of “The Mandalorian” is broadcasted, social media platforms are inundated with people expressing their affection for the adorable character Grogu, from his unique walk to his cute sounds and his fondness for snacks. With oversized eyes and ears even larger than that, Grogu has transcended being just a “Star Wars” fan favorite. Display his image to anyone, regardless of whether they’ve watched “The Mandalorian” or not, and chances are they recognize Grogu, or at least know him by the nickname Baby Yoda.
In an effort to maintain a surprise element prior to the debut of The Mandalorian in November 2019, Disney opted not to produce any merchandise featuring Grogu. However, this decision left significant sales potential untapped during that initial year as eager fans began creating their own merchandise featuring the beloved little green alien, just in time for the holiday shopping season. By 2020, Disney had caught up and Grogu became ubiquitous in merchandise.
In terms of Star Wars merchandise popularity, Grogu is as iconic as any character from the original series. To many fans, Grogu embodies their image of Star Wars. It’s no surprise that the franchise’s first movie since The Rise of Skywalker, titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, will feature this beloved Star Wars character prominently when it hits theaters in May 2026. When Grogu takes the big screen, audiences can expect a mix of excited cheers and audible “awws” during the opening weekend.
