As a child of the 80s and 90s, I have to say that these suggestions are music to my old-school gaming heart! Each one of these characters holds a special place in my gaming memories, from the terrifying mad piano in Super Mario 64 to the alien invader Tatanga from Super Mario Land.

For instance, “Hey Bulldog” could be considered a deep cut in the Beatles’ discography, and similarly, in movies, these might be likened to hidden gems or easter eggs. In essence, I adore these lesser-known yet fascinating aspects.
When Keegan-Michael Key, voice of Toad, hinted to Men’s Journal that the upcoming “Super Mario Bros.” film may feature some lesser-known characters (or “deep cuts”), my Nintendo-loving heart skipped a beat. As a die-hard Nintendo fan, I’m always ready for more of the good stuff! The 2023 “Super Mario Bros. Movie” was overflowing with Easter eggs, which some of us found a bit too much. So what hidden gems can we expect in the next movie? Let me share what I’ve learned!
Rosalina
To begin with, I’ll ease into a discussion with Rosalina, who debuted in the game, Super Mario Galaxy. Corey Chichizola, among us, has expressed his wish for her to join the roster of renowned Nintendo characters in the upcoming sequel. Now, it’s quite likely that she will make an appearance in the next film.
As a gamer, I’m speculating this because Princess Peach herself mentioned in the last movie that “the universe is vast, filled with countless galaxies.” This comment has left fans intrigued, as it seems to hint at the Galaxy series. With this in mind, it’s not impossible to imagine Rosalina making an appearance soon.
Rosalina is quite remarkable within the Mario franchise, as she’s one of its prominent Princesses, alongside Peach. While Daisy has been a notable character too, particularly in the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, her popularity pales in comparison to Rosalina.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my enthusiasm for including Rosalina in the upcoming sequel. Her presence would undeniably bring back the surreal and captivating atmosphere that made the Mario Galaxy games so unique. In essence, I eagerly anticipate seeing her again in the next installment!
Pauline
If you’re curious about the original damsel in distress character, it would be Pauline. She made her debut in Mario’s first game, titled “Donkey Kong.” At that time, Mario was referred to as Jumpman, and Pauline was commonly known as either “Lady” or “Beautiful Girl.
Today, surprisingly, she is now the mayor of New Donk City, according to “Super Mario Odyssey.” It would add an interesting touch if they presented her character in the film with this role mentioned.
In the initial movie, we visited the Mushroom Kingdom. Imagine if instead, in a different dimension, Mario and Luigi found themselves in a New York City-like setting, only to discover it was New Donk City! And guess who’s the mayor? None other than Pauline! Admit it, that sounds pretty cool, right?
Donkey Kong Jr.
As a gamer, let me dive deep into the details here: Some folks might raise an eyebrow when I say this next choice, as there’s been talk that Donkey Kong Jr. could have made a sneaky appearance in the initial Super Mario Bros. Movie. The reason? A lot of gaming enthusiasts are convinced that Donkey Kong is actually the offspring of Cranky Kong, who graced our screens in the first flick.
On the other hand, there’s been a lot of debate regarding this point for some time. Some fans propose that the DK character from games like the “Donkey Kong Country” series could be the GRANDSON of Cranky Kong. This suggests that Donkey Kong Jr., in these games, might actually be DK’s biological father instead.
In 1982, Donkey Kong Jr. made an appearance in his very own game, and he also raced in the initial Super Mario Kart. It would be fascinating to see this detail incorporated (and explained more clearly) in the upcoming movie, as I’m genuinely curious about it. After all, I need to find out!
Toadette
In the 2023 “Super Mario Bros.” film, there were numerous types of toads featured, yet surprisingly, Toadette was not among them, a character I found hard to believe was omitted.
Making her first appearance in “Mario Kart: Double Dash!!”, Toadette captivates with her mushroom-topped pigtails and charming demeanor. She’s part of the Toad Brigade and has a unique ability to acquire the Super Crown item, which allows her to transform into Peachette – an unusual trait, but one that adds to the charm of Nintendo games!
It would be fantastic if the Super Crown appeared in the sequel, as it would be quite a subtle reference, and there’s no doubt in my mind that Toadette would be the ideal character to wear it. The Super Crown holds immense power, transforming one person into another.
It’d be quite intriguing if Toadette transformed into a look-alike Princess Peach character in the upcoming installment, right? And imagine if they subtly incorporate an unsettling aspect related to body transformation. Now, you might wonder why I’m suggesting this for a children’s movie, but some tasteful horror elements can add an exciting twist!
Nabbit
Dagnabbit, Nabbit!
In my gaming world, I first encountered Nabbit back in New Super Mario Bros. U. Essentially, this furry fella loves to swipe items and make a quick exit. It’s as simple as that! He’s got an intriguing appearance with his bandana adorned with toothy doodles, and he seems to be a bunny-like character (different from the Rabbids, which I’ll delve into later).
As a dedicated fan, I’d say it’s intriguing that Nabbit could be considered a ‘deep cut’ character. Despite his appearance in the latest “Super Mario Bros. Wonder,” he’s relatively new compared to others on this list. His loyalty, however, appears to be somewhat uncertain or unclear at this point.
Ever since it was revealed that he had previously burgled Toad’s abode, I find it intriguing if he might be up to something comparable in the follow-up. A bit of history about him would certainly add depth, as I must admit I’m still unsure about his true nature.
Wart
Despite my enjoyment of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, there was a small issue I encountered during Bowser’s wedding scene.
In the given scene, several other bosses were present, including King Bob-omb from Super Mario 64 and King Boo. However, one character’s absence left me quite surprised – Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2.
Indeed, you’re correct that Wart has been featured in just one Mario game, which is often referred to as the unusual one. Despite my anticipation that a film packed with so many references would include Wart somewhere, he was absent. However, it’s high time for the next movie to address this oversight promptly!
Mad Piano
Regarding the game “Super Mario 64”, there was one foe that used to give me quite a fright when I was young, and that was the menacing piano hidden within Big Boo’s Mansion.
To be completely honest, when Bowser belted out “Peaches” in the initial movie, I genuinely anticipated the piano might take a playful nip at his digits, a subtle wink to that ominous instrument. Alas, it was simply another instance of a potential joke left unexplored. But here’s hoping they seize that opportunity and make it happen in the sequel!
Tatanga
Looking for a challenging move? Try using Tatanga from the classic game “Super Mario Land” on your Game Boy. That’s quite a challenging move indeed! First introduced back in 1989, Tatanga was the final boss in the first Game Boy Mario adventure. He was an alien who navigated through space in a spaceship.
Let’s entertain a hypothetical scenario: The upcoming Mario film might just introduce us to Princess Rosalina. Here’s an intriguing twist: Her home planet could be under attack by none other than the elusive cosmic villain, Tatanga the Intergalactic Outlaw!
It’s safe to say that the 40-ish Nintendo enthusiasts here would be ecstatic if they caught this nod. After all, I can relate because I’m part of that group myself.
The Rabbids
Indeed, let me clarify as there might be some confusion since Rabbids aren’t technically Nintendo characters, although they have collaborated with them on two Switch games – “Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle” and “Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope”. However, it is important to note that the Rabbids are actually part of Ubisoft’s roster, not Nintendo’s.
Still, I think it would be really interesting if Mario were to somehow acquire a blaster in the sequel, and maybe a Rabbid would be in the background or possibly even referenced somehow. I don’t know, but my nerdy heart would definitely do a backflip if it happened.
Ganon
In conclusion, having Ganon in the film would be the most poignant touch. I understand your skepticism; we’re already getting a The Legend of Zelda movie, but bear with me for a moment.
Instead of repeating the reference to “The Super Mario Bros. Super Show” as they did in the initial film using the theme song, imagine if they instead made a nod to another Nintendo animated series that was featured on the program every Friday – specifically, “The Legend of Zelda”.
Sure, you might say, why not just have Link instead then? But, how much deeper of a cut could you get than with Ganon (Especially THIS Ganon) in the next movie? It’s perfect!
