Ever since Disney+ debuted in 2019, the studio has been diligently adding original content to their streaming platform. However, it came as a shock when some of these exclusive Disney productions were removed during content revisions and have not resurfaced on Disney+ nor any other platform.
In recent times, both Disney and Warner Bros. have been under scrutiny for taking down content, frequently doing so to reduce costs or claim tax benefits. Sometimes, these shows reappear on the streaming platform following removal, as Marvel’s Runaways did last year. However, there are other titles that haven’t resurfaced since they were taken off, such as the ones listed below.
These Purged Disney+ Shows Still Aren’t Available on Streaming
The Mysterious Benedict Society
Due to the widespread admiration for the beloved series, “The Mysterious Benedict Society,” which chronicled the escapades of four young protagonists attempting to thwart a global disaster, the show ran for two seasons on Disney+. However, even this wasn’t sufficient to prevent its cancellation as part of Disney’s content reduction in 2023.
I was deeply disheartened alongside the cast and crew when the show got cancelled, as expressed by Phil Hay on his platform (previously Twitter). Similarly, another writer, James Earl, voiced his sorrow, stating that unfortunately, his young nephews who were just becoming the target audience for the show, would no longer have the opportunity to enjoy it. As he put it, “As long as it is stream-able, I STILL RECEIVE ROYALTIES. Now it will vanish forever,” expressing his frustration that the show’s removal means it will no longer be accessible to future generations.
Willow
The continuation and follow-up of Ron Howard’s 80s fantasy cult favorite, Willow, picks up where we left off with Warwick Davis’ cherished sorcerer embarking on a fresh adventure alongside a new crop of young talents. Unfortunately, the show was removed from streaming platforms only a few months after its final episode, leaving it with minimal time to gain popularity.
Davis expressed his displeasure about the removal, posting on social media that he often encounters delightful people who admire Willow, stating it was “shameful”. Similarly, a writer for the show, John Bickerstaff, mirrored Davis’s sentiments online, saying, “The entertainment industry has turned into an unfairly harsh place.
In the meantime, the showrunner of the series, Jonathan Kasdan, expressed a different viewpoint, stating he felt “somewhat fond” of the decision and that it reminded him of an old time when “Disney films were occasionally re-released and not readily available for purchase.” He further mentioned that he was not concerned because he expected the show Willow to be brought back. However, two years have passed since then, and fans are still anticipating its return.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers
In a new continuation of the cherished franchise, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, actress Lauren Graham and Brady Noon starred. This series enjoyed a run of two seasons until it fell casualty to the content removal wave on Disney+ in 2023.
Due to certain unseen challenges during production and cast swaps, which might’ve factored into its non-renewal for a third season, the show is now effectively erased or eliminated from our viewing options.
Turner & Hooch
Turner & Hooch is one of Disney’s continuations of their original works, reviving the 1989 human-canine buddy cop story into a 12-episode comedic television series. The main character, Scott Turner Jr., was portrayed by Josh Peck, while five different dogs took turns playing the role of Hooch.
Although the Turner & Hooch TV series is no longer streamable on Disney+, the 1989 movie version of it remains accessible there.
Just Beyond
Just Beyond” was derived from the comic book series with the same title by renowned author R.L. Stine, who is also known for his work on “Goosebumps”. Regrettably, this anthology series didn’t continue past its first eight episodes. The show offered a blend of humor and horror as it delved into intriguing tales set in an alternate reality.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I couldn’t help but share my disappointment upon hearing the news about the cancellation of “Just Beyond”. Being its showrunner, I poured my heart into creating this series with my children in mind. Hearing about its removal left me feeling truly sad.
Earth to Ned
Developed by Brian Henson, one of the offspring of renowned Jim Henson, Earth to Ned was a story about an alien called Ned who lands on our planet and grows captivated by human culture, particularly its popular trends. Paul Rugg played the character of Ned, who ultimately starts hosting a talk show where he chats with his preferred Earth celebrities.
One of the writers for the show, Eliza Skinner, told The Hollywood Reporter that she found out about Ned being taken off the show when she was sent an article about it. She explained that this incident contributed to a feeling of undervaluing the work they were doing. Similar to other shows, Earth to Ned has not been released digitally or physically since its removal.
Diary of a Future President
A Disney+ series that ran for only two seasons was “Diary of a Future President.” This show featured Tess Romero as young Elena Cañero-Reed, who aspired to become the future U.S. President. Gina Rodriguez played Elena in flashforwards, where she is seen as the President. Unfortunately, the series has not been renewed since it was taken off air in 2023.
The World According to Jeff Goldblum
Even the pet projects of Jeff Goldblum, famously known for his roles in Marvel and Jurassic Park, weren’t exempt from the content removal on Disney+.
In the role of an enthusiastic moviegoer, let me tell you about my journey through a captivating docuseries titled “The World Through Jeff Goldblum’s Eyes“. This fascinating show took me on a tour of everyday subjects that piqued my curiosity, such as tattoos, ice cream, and sneakers. Over the course of two seasons, I was treated to 22 insightful episodes filled with my unique perspectives on these topics.
Marvel’s Hero Project
As a fellow movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts about Marvel’s Hero Project. When Disney+ debuted in 2019, this series was one of the first to capture our attention. It wasn’t just another superhero tale; it showcased the extraordinary lives of real-world young heroes who were transforming their communities. However, sadly, these inspiring stories are no longer available on Disney+. They mysteriously disappeared in 2023 and haven’t returned since.
The Right Stuff
Disney’s adaptation of “The Right Stuff” extended their practice of breathing new life into classic assets as television series. The TV show centered around the evolution of America’s space program, but unfortunately, the historical drama starring Jake McDorman and Patrick J. Adams could only sustain one season, ultimately ending its run in 2023.
