The Fast and Furious series presents a complex narrative timeline, resulting in perplexing plot inconsistencies. With hasty transitions between time periods, an occasional reboot, and numerous retcons, there are far too many conflicting storylines that lead to a disorganized and confusing tale. Despite the fact that the original movie, The Fast and the Furious, has remained appealing over time due to its relatable storyline with a limited number of captivating characters, the more expansive the films in the franchise become, the less coherent and logical they seem.
As the 11th movie, possibly the last in the Fast and Furious series, is being produced, there’s curiosity about which lingering questions the creators will manage to address. A major challenge in wrapping up the Fast and Furious franchise is crafting a consistent story that provides fitting conclusions for all surviving and significant characters, a task that seems daunting. The complexity increases because several Fast and Furious characters have been sidelined by the series, leading to questions about their whereabouts. However, the most perplexing issues are continuity errors.
10. Roman And Tej in Space
It Was A Running Joke Among Fans
In the more recent installments of the Fast & Furious series, it’s evident that the movies disregard fundamental laws of physics and logic in their storytelling and action sequences. Following The Fate of the Furious, fans, seeking to poke fun at the extraordinary stunts depicted in the film while also speculating about future plot twists, began humorously suggesting that the next movie would feature a space journey. This is precisely the kind of outlandish and implausible stunt that the franchise has become known for.
In the movie F9, it’s not thrilling that Roman and Tej go to space, but rather leaves us feeling let down instead. How did they become so predictably unrealistic? A car flying to space, attached to a rocket, goes far beyond the disregard for scientific accuracy these films are known for. To add to the absurdity, they seemingly crash into a satellite with no repercussions, yet remain undamaged. To top it off, somehow the characters from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and their crew have the ability to send cars to space. This just seems too far-fetched and strains credibility.
9. Brian Becomes A Pro Street Racer
His Skills Level Up Too Quickly
Initially, Brian O’Conner dabbled in the world of street racing as an obvious novice with a reckless driving style. Yet, by the end of “The Fast and the Furious,” he was competing against Dom in a race, demonstrating that he could match Toretto’s speed. In just one film, he transformed from a total newcomer to pushing the best drag racer to his limits. What’s even more perplexing is that he then transitioned into a skilled vehicular stuntman in “2 Fast 2 Furious.
The quick progression of Brian’s skills as a racer seems illogical, considering the limited practice he had during “The Fast and the Furious”. Even if we assume that Dom allowed him to believe they were close, it doesn’t account for his extraordinary drag-racing abilities in “2 Fast 2 Furious”, culminating in his car jumping onto a boat. Many fans consider “2 Fast 2 Furious” and “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” as underrated “Fast and Furious” movies, but the sudden mastery of racing by Brian in the former creates a significant plot inconsistency.
8. Sean Changes A Yakuza Boss’ Mind
The Mafia Wouldn’t Take Advice From A Teenager
Tokyo Drift” is often recognized as one of the best and most underestimated movies in the series. However, one particularly puzzling scene leaves many viewers scratching their heads. In this scene, Sean, embroiled in a conflict with DK, makes an impulsive decision to save his own life by storming into a restricted club. There, he unexpectedly confronts his uncle, a Yakuza leader, and manages to extricate himself unscathed from the encounter.
The Yakuza, a notorious Japanese organized crime group, has a reputation for extreme harshness, particularly towards disobedience. So, even though DK defied his uncle, he shows obvious fear of him. As an American teenager, Sean might not understand the Yakuza’s influence, but it seems strange that they allowed him to freely enter their club and request a meeting with the boss. Additionally, DK’s uncle is influenced and follows the suggestions given by Sean. The movie is excellent overall, but this scene leaves a significant question unanswered: why did the gang let Sean in so easily? This could be considered a plot inconsistency.
7. Dom’s Strength Is Unrealistic
He Becomes Superhuman
Indeed, Vin Diesel’s commanding physique is undeniably emblematic of Dominic Toretto’s character, as his formidable build often serves as a warning to those who cross his path. In certain situations, he has demonstrated an ability to overpower multiple adversaries, should the need arise. It’s worth noting that there are whispers in his past about a tragic incident involving the loss of another life, a burden he carries with him. However, it’s only towards the later films in the franchise that Dominic begins to exhibit strength beyond the realm of human capability.
Lifting a Lykan Hypersport might not call for Superman’s power, but it’s practically unachievable for an average person as depicted by Dominic in “Furious 7.” Despite evident strain, he manages to keep the car aloft for an astonishingly long duration. In addition, a single display of his immense strength was enough to crack a house’s foundation. From inducing an actual earthquake by treading on the ground to overturning a vehicle with just one arm, Dominic’s instances of supernatural strength in the “Fast and Furious” series become increasingly extraordinary with each subsequent film.
6. Gisele’s Return In Fast X
No One Really Dies In This Franchise
In the world of the Fast and Furious films, it’s become something of a running gag that character deaths hold little weight, as it seems no one truly stays deceased. From Letty to Han, a surprising number of characters who have apparently perished have managed to reappear in the series. However, unlike these more prominent figures, there was one character whose death was considered final because she wasn’t memorable enough for fans to expect her return.
Despite some surprise, Gal Gadot’s character Gisele reappears in the upcoming film Fast X, suggesting she may play a crucial part in the franchise’s finale. However, it’s unclear why her return is necessary given that her skillset doesn’t seem essential. In fact, her most significant role, in Fast Five, involves an improbable scenario where she obtains a man’s fingerprints on her swimsuit bottom. This character lacks depth and memorable dialogue, leading many to question if her return trivializes death, making one ponder if the deceased Jakob might resurface in the next installment.
5. Dom’s Son Is A Plot Hole
The Logistics Make No Sense
It’s clear that naming Dom’s son Brian, after Paul Walker’s character, isn’t missed by anyone. However, considering the logical inconsistencies it presents, one might question whether it’s a decision worth making. To clarify, Elena gives birth to Dom’s son in Fast Five, under the impression that Letty had perished in the previous film. Yet, Letty reappears in Fast & Furious 6 and Dom chooses to reunite with her instead of raising his newborn son with Elena.
Despite appearing pregnant across three movies, Elena concealed her child from Dom for the purpose of introducing them and having him name the baby. The primary intrigue in her pregnancy isn’t the duration or lack of emotional reactions; it lies in the fact that she should have been pregnant at the time Deckard Shaw detonated the building where Elena and Hobbs were, resulting in a fall from a considerable height. This isn’t merely a miracle but also a plot inconsistency that Little Brian exists at all.
4. Deckard Shaw’s Redemption
Killing Han Should’ve Been Too Far
It was inevitable that Jason Statham would join the Fast and Furious series, considering its expanding roster and status as an action franchise. His much-anticipated debut didn’t disappoint either, with his portrayal of a captivating villain in the series. Shaw, who is almost invincible and has a ruthless determination to avenge his brother, leaves no stone unturned when going after the Toretto family and Dom’s crew.
In a surprising turn, the most outlandish moment featuring Deckard Shaw in “The Fate of the Furious” comes from his unexpected appearance at the family barbecue. Given that he had taken the life of one of the crew’s dearest members, Han, it seems too quick for him to be forgiven. The actions Deckard Shaw took in “Furious 7” border on international terrorism. Yet, he is now seen as a hero, having been pardoned completely. This shift in character is utterly illogical, and the franchise might have been stronger had he continued to play the villain role.
3. Jakob’s Real Identity
A Hidden Toretto Brother For So Long Makes No Sense
In much the same way as I’ve been anticipating, John Cena made an entrance into the Fast and Furious universe that felt both destined and overdue. His undeniable knack for comedy brought us a riotously funny and lasting moment in Fast X, but it’s hard not to notice the inconsistencies surrounding his character. It turns out, Dominic and Mia have had an unspoken brother named Jakob all along, who they believed was deceased, hence explaining why he wasn’t brought up in the course of eight movies.
As a cinephile, let me rephrase that from Dominic Toretto’s perspective: “Family may seem like a joke sometimes, but the bond we share is no laughing matter. Frankly, it feels strange how I’m supposed to believe that I was unaware of our father’s financial troubles, and that their mother was entirely absent in our lives. It’s as if Jakob’s absence was hastily explained with a story riddled with inconsistencies. The way I treated Jakob… it feels like neglect, and if he weren’t a Toretto, perhaps things would be different for both of us. Resolving all our issues in the blink of an eye during a 15-second car ride? That’s got to be the biggest plot hole of them all.
2. Tej Being A Master Hacker
Him Being A Computer Genius Came From Out Of Nowhere
In the film 2 Fast 2 Furious, Brian O’Conner initially presents Tej Parker as a skilled auto-electrician who modifies cars and races them for street racers to earn money. However, by the time we encounter him in Fast Five, Tej has evolved into a tech-savvy individual suitable for an action franchise. Eventually, his abilities extend beyond auto-electrics and he transforms into a brilliant hacker.
Between Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7, the character Tej Parker developed extraordinary hacking skills that matched those of Ramsey, one of the genre’s top hackers. Not only did the Fast and Furious series miss an opportunity to feature a female character as the “computer guy,” but the contorted logic in each film to include both Tej and Ramsey on the team only deepened the plot inconsistencies. It would have been more fitting for Tej to continue as the mechanic/tech expert, while Ramsey took on the role of the hacker.
1. Nobody Recruits Dom’s Crew
They’re Al wanted Criminals
Over time, the Fast and Furious series has significantly shifted from its original focus on car-racing criminals to a storyline about a team of extraordinary individuals averting an impending catastrophe by causing cars to levitate. This dramatic transformation feels abrupt and illogical since it’s hard to imagine any law enforcement agency would enlist Dom and his crew given their criminal past. Additionally, it’s questionable whether they possess the skills required for their new roles, yet they continue to excel at them.
In the films featuring Dom and his kin up until “Furious 7”, each plot was personally driven, with Brian being the lone figure associated with law enforcement. His promotion seems illogical considering how often he assisted Dom, who is a known criminal. A more significant issue arises: How was Mr. Nobody permitted to enlist these acknowledged criminals for tasks they should be inept at? However, “Furious 7” transforms them into law-abiding agents, and this transition from the earlier narratives never fully resonates, even up until “Fast X”.
