Monsters (2010)
Prior to Gareth Edwards transporting us back into the realm of dinosaurs in this summer’s “Jurassic World Rebirth”, it would be worthwhile to explore his initial masterpiece first. Made on a budget of under $1 million, “Monsters” showcased Edwards (a former VFX artist turned filmmaker) as an emerging talent with a knack for creating visually striking, thought-provoking narratives. The key element that ties the story together is the evolving human connection between Andrew Kaulder (Scott McNairy) and Samantha Wynden (Whitney Able), as they journey through a strictly off-limits quarantine zone brimming with peculiar extraterrestrial life, situated along the border of the United States and Mexico.

Apollo 18 (2011)
NASA ceased moon landings after 1972 for reasons unexplored until now. The film “Apollo 18” explores this mystery through a chilling found-footage narrative centered around the last, doomed lunar mission. Brian Miller, the screenwriter, drew inspiration from blending paranormal activity with real Apollo Moon mission footage to create horror. His admiration for Ridley Scott’s original “Alien” significantly influenced this film.

Source Code (2011)
In his review for SYFY WIRE, Benjamin Bullard notes that Director Duncan Jones’ sequel to Moon delivers a genuinely uplifting and redemptive message amidst what appears to be an inevitable tragedy. Interestingly, in this film, surpassing the boundaries of current scientific knowledge is actually the central theme.

Limitless (2011)
Limitless fully explores its central idea – a pill enhancing intelligence – via Bradley Cooper’s captivating portrayal, the allure of wish fulfillment, and clever color application. Prior to Eddie Mora (Cooper) consuming the wonder drug NZT-48, the world seems dull and almost devoid of color. However, as his IQ soars, reality transforms into a more radiant and vibrant scene.

Paul (2011)
In a comical spin-off of popular alien movies, notably those produced by Steven Spielberg, the movie “Cornetto Trilogy” stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost portray two enthusiastic UFO seekers encountering a genuine extraterrestrial, voiced by Seth Rogen. Unlike the past friendly aliens with their waddling gaits, Paul is more like an uncouth, boisterous partier with a large, spherical head and a high-value target on it. The movie’s main appeal lies in its unique Spielberg cameo appearance.

The Invisible Man (2020)
On a budget of $7 million, Leigh Whannell’s modern interpretation of a Universal Monsters classic was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful (one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise challenging year for Hollywood). Loosely based on H.G. Wells’ novel, The Invisible Man updates the story to today’s world, delving into a chilling portrayal of how destructive behaviors like toxic masculinity and domestic abuse can manifest subtly and insidiously.

Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
In simple terms, the final installment of the Jurassic World trilogy fulfills fan expectations by assembling the original cast from Jurassic Park. Characters like Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) reunite, having survived the terrifying events on Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna (Site B). The reunion is triggered by a sinister plot from the ruthless corporation, Biosyn, who were behind the chaos in the first movie. This plot eventually pits the original characters against the heroes of Jurassic World, Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard).

Meet Cute (2022)
Meet Cute is a unique blend of When Harry Met Sally and Groundhog Day, where the protagonist Sheila (Kaley Cuoco) gets to re-live a romantic date with Gary (Pete Davidson), using a time machine. The goal? To mold him into her ideal partner. As director Alex Lehmann explained to ScreenRant in 2022, this movie serves as a deconstruction of both time travel and romantic comedy tropes while still paying homage to them. This fresh take on the genre has left Lehmann with a renewed appreciation for what romantic comedies can achieve, and offers a refreshing take on time travel that’s unlike anything seen before.

If You Were the Last (2023)
In their aimless journey through space with slim prospects of rescue, two astronauts – Adam (Anthony Mackie) and Jane (Zoë Chao) – ponder whether they should maintain friendship or escalate their bond into something romantic. “One aspect that people frequently discuss about this movie is, ‘Wow, this is unexpected! I never thought these events would unfold. Typically, I can foresee such things, but not in this case,'” director Kristian Mercado stated to CBR in 2023. “There’s a certain deconstruction of common rom-com tropes that still manages to preserve the essence of a romantic comedy – a twist I find truly remarkable.

The Wild Robot (2024)
Originating from director Chris Sanders, known for co-creating beloved series like “Lilo & Stitch” and “How to Train Your Dragon”, comes the adaptation of the children’s book titled “The Wild Robot“. The voice cast is headed by Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, who gives life to a robot stranded on an island populated only by wildlife. This production from DreamWorks Animation received three Academy Award nominations and also features the vocal talents of Kit Connor, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames.
