2025 promises to be an outstanding year for horror enthusiasts, boasting an impressive array of anticipated releases that have left some gems somewhat overshadowed amidst the buzz. As it stands, the current top horror movies of 2025 have already set a strong foundation, with groundbreaking originals such as “Sinners” and adaptations like “The Monkey” grabbing attention. However, as we inch closer to the heavier release seasons, it’s somewhat surprising to find a few notable upcoming horror films slipping under the radar.
Mostly, these movies often find themselves overshadowed by popular blockbuster horror sequels such as the second installments of “Five Nights at Freddy’s” and “M3GAN 2.0”, along with renowned series like “28 Years Later” and “The Predator: Badlands”. However, it’s crucial to keep an eye on upcoming original horror films and sequels to lesser-known movies, as these could potentially spawn new franchises. Some 2025 horror flicks may not be highly anticipated yet, but they certainly deserve more buzz.
10. Clown In A Cornfield
Releasing May 9th
As a cinema enthusiast, I’m particularly excited about the upcoming horror movie in 2025 titled “Clown in a Cornfield.” Despite the buzz around other releases, this one seems to have flown under the radar. The film promises to deliver on its title, introducing us to a chilling new horror icon, Frendo the Clown, who terrorizes a group of unassuming teenagers amidst a cornfield. Interestingly, this movie is based on a 2020 young adult novel with the same name.
For some time now, it seems like no horror film has effectively exploited a common phobia as successfully as coulrophobia, with the Terrifier franchise’s character Art the Clown appearing more sinister than jocular in nature. It appears that the original source material drew upon the eerie real-life trend of unsettling clown sightings across multiple nations in 2016, which has now reached an age where it could be adapted into a horror movie. Remarkably, many horror enthusiasts seem to overlook this entertainingly straightforward slasher.
9. Bring Her Back
Releasing May 30th
One of the standout supernatural thrillers of late was the Australian horror movie “Talk To Me”, where a teenage girl in search of her deceased mother uses a risky spiritual ritual, which unleashes various menacing spirits upon her. Coming soon from the same directors, Danny and Michael Philippou, is another chilling tale named “Bring Her Back“, featuring a storyline about a brother and sister who encounter their foster sister for the first time, but find that she hides a horrifying secret within herself.
As a film aficionado, I can’t help but express my curiosity about the upcoming sophomore project of the talented Philippou twins on A24. Will it be linked to their initial work, as the title “Bring Her Back” suggests a parallel theme of resurrecting the deceased? The movie boasts Sally Hawkins, famously known for her role in “The Shape of Water“, promising performances that could rival those seen in “Talk To Me“. It’s intriguing to note that despite the captivating success of “Talk To Me“, “Bring Her Back” seems to be generating less hype.
8. The Black Phone 2
Releasing October 17th
In recent years, “The Black Phone” has been one of Blumhouse Production’s most successful original films, raking in impressive earnings at the box office amidst a movie market that was gradually bouncing back from the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the works of Joe Hill, son of Stephen King, this chilling tale recounts the harrowing experience of a young boy trying to free himself from the grip of a sinister child killer known as The Grabber. Utilizing a mystical phone, he communicates with victims from beyond the grave. A fantastic financial return for Blumhouse, it’s only natural that “The Black Phone” will be getting a follow-up movie.
It’s intriguing to think about where the plot goes next, given that the initial film seemed complete in itself. Nevertheless, the storyline has grown a bit with a prequel short film titled “Dreamkiller” being part of the V/H/S anthology series. Unfortunately, not many are asking for The Black Phone 2, but let’s hope that upcoming information and promotional content can generate the excitement it needs.
7. Fear Street: Prom Queen
Releasing May 23rd
The Fear Street trilogy, a Netflix original series based on R.L. Stine’s popular horror novels for children (known for Goosebumps), might be one of the most underestimated productions Netflix has ever made. These movies delve into an extensive narrative spanning various decades that revolves around a haunting curse affecting the quaint town of Shadyside. The first three films explore the 90s, 70s, and even as far back as the 1660s American colonization era, with Fear Street: Prom Queen set to offer an homage to the 80s.
In this movie titled “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” a group of popular high school girls competing for the title of Prom Queen mysteriously start vanishing. It’s intriguing to see how this film connects with the larger narrative of the Fear Street franchise, as it seems to be set between two time periods that have already been depicted in previous movies. The Fear Street series has been somewhat overlooked and it’s hoped that Fear Street: Prom Queen can boost its popularity within horror enthusiast communities.
6. Weapons
Releasing August 8th
It’s challenging for entirely new horror films to create excitement among audiences, but the upcoming movie “Weapons” deserves significantly more buzz. Previously, writer and director Zach Cregger won over horror enthusiasts with his 2022 smash hit “Barbarian,” which turned the home invasion subgenre upside down. “Weapons” will focus on a class of students who mysteriously vanish simultaneously, except for one. This singular survivor triggers an unsettling investigation into what caused their disappearance.
It’s significant that Jordan Peele, the renowned horror producer, let go his managers following their unsuccessful attempt to obtain the rights for the “Weapons” script in a fierce competition (as reported by Deadline). The unique nature of Cregger’s “Weapons” script, which some believe will explore themes linked to the aftermath of school shootings, suggests it holds something extraordinary. With big-name stars like Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, and Benedict Wong attached to the project, anticipation for its release is mounting.
5. Him
Releasing September 19th
Discussing Jordan Peele, it’s only natural that the gifted horror movie director would be involved in an intriguing project set for release in 2025. Jordan Peele’s production company, Monkeypaw Productions, is set to contribute to the creation of the upcoming horror sports drama titled Him. This film will feature Tyriq Withers, renowned for his role in Atlanta, as the lead. In Him , Withers plays a talented football player who enters a mysterious training facility where he is coached by an aging star quarterback, portrayed by Marlon Wayans, famously known for his work on Scary Movie in the horror genre.
It appears that the story revolves around him, who is set to explore the extreme measures athletes take in pursuit of greatness. This journey may lead his character into a Faustian predicament, putting his body, mind, and spirit at risk. The recently unveiled trailer for the film offers tantalizing visuals, resembling a male-oriented version of last year’s hit horror movie “The Substance.” With its distinct horror elements, this movie promises to deliver an extraordinary experience that many are eagerly awaiting.
4. Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein
Releasing November
Over time, numerous efforts to breathe new life into the traditional Universal horror film monsters for contemporary audiences have emerged and then faded away, including disappointments like “The Wolf Man” and the aborted Dark Universe project. Yet, if there’s one filmmaker capable of making such a concept successful, it is none other than Guillermo del Toro, mastermind behind creature features and a horror maestro. In the year 2025, Guillermo del Toro will introduce his unique interpretation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel “Frankenstein.
Guillermo del Toro’s knack for creating unsettling dark fantasies and tales of sorrowful monstrosities perfectly qualifies him for a Frankenstein movie. What makes this even more exciting is that Oscar Isaac will play Victor Frankenstein, while Jacob Elordi portrays the monster itself. Additionally, we have Christoph Waltz and Mia Goth in the cast. Since his last significant production, The Shape of Water in 2017, this is one of del Toro’s highly anticipated projects. Fingers crossed that Netflix’s exclusive release won’t affect the film’s popularity when it premieres in November.
3. Cold Storage
Unspecified 2025 release
Due to the growing buzz surrounding The Last of Us‘s second season, it’s astonishing that no significant horror film has tackled a parasitic fungus as an antagonist before. However, this is set to change with the upcoming movie, Cold Storage, which is planned for release in 2025. This film will focus on a menacing parasitic fungus that escapes from a government facility, placing a small group of individuals in the path of its potential global takeover.
In the upcoming movie “Cold Storage”, we’ll see Joe Keery from “Stranger Things” teaming up with Liam Neeson, who will portray a seasoned bioterrorism operative serving as something of a guide. Watching a mutating fungus face off against these well-known characters promises to be an exciting experience. Moreover, David Koepp, renowned for his work in Hollywood, is writing the script for this film. Known for hits like “Spider-Man” and “Panic Room”, Koepp’s involvement adds a layer of anticipation. Despite the movie appearing to lean more towards fun rather than pure terror, the intrigue surrounding “Cold Storage” is definitely growing.
2. The Ritual
Releasing June 6th
Year after year, it appears that demonic possession horror films remain a dependable component of the genre. In 2025, this trend will persist with “The Ritual,” a new supernatural thriller slated for release. This film marks the directorial debut of David Midell. The narrative revolves around two Catholic priests, each grappling with their individual struggles, who embark on a challenging journey of exorcisms in an attempt to liberate a young girl from malevolent forces.
Although it may seem similar to other well-known demonic possession films on the surface, “The Ritual” distinguishes itself by allegedly being based on real events. What makes it even more intriguing is that Al Pacino, a celebrated actor known more for prestige cinema, will be portraying one of the conflicted exorcists in this horror film. “The Ritual” could potentially be an under-the-radar horror gem set to premiere in 2025.
1. Anaconda
Releasing December 25th
It seems that a surprising, comically unexpected addition to this year’s 2025 horror lineup is a reboot of the iconic creature feature from 1997, Anaconda. Similar to its predecessor, Anaconda will essentially be like Jaws, but with a giant man-eating snake. However, it’ll have a clever, self-referential twist: the characters will be trying to recapture past glory by remaking one of their favorite films. This means that in this reboot, the characters would already be familiar with the original Anaconda.
This unconventional concept, which playfully comments on the repetitive trend in Hollywood storytelling today, could offer some thought-provoking insights. The comedic duo, Jack Black and Paul Rudd, are set to orchestrate the mayhem, and the spectacle of them being pursued by a massive snake is definitely a draw that warrants ticket purchase. Given the stellar cast involved, it’s surprising that this upcoming horror movie isn’t creating more excitement for the 2025 lineup of terror-filled films.
