As a lifelong fan of soap operas and all things nautical, I simply cannot contain my excitement for “Doctor Odyssey”! This isn’t just another medical drama; it’s a steamy romance novel unfolding on a boat with an irresistible blend of sexiness, drama, and the salty sea air.
Titled “Doctor Odyssey,” created by Ryan Murphy, this captivating series blends elements of steamy fantasy with the backdrop of a medical drama set on television networks. As the newest chief physician aboard the luxurious cruise liner, The Odyssey, Max Bankman, along with his small crew, tackles the various medical predicaments that occur at sea. Simultaneously, they delve into the intricate relationships and dynamics that exist among the team members.
This new series might as well be labeled “A Comedian-Free Medical Saga,” given its sudden appearance without much demand, reminiscent of “The Love Boat” minus the humor, replaced by a medical cast instead. Picture a blend between an unrealistic “Grey’s Anatomy” and Royal Caribbean cruises. The three-doctor team is solely tasked with ensuring the health and safety of every passenger aboard the ship, which sounds more like a fairy tale than reality – a hint at the show’s absurdity. Despite its questionable appeal, you just can’t look away. It treads that fine line between love and loathing. Perhaps it’s the allure of the expansive ship deck they call “big deck energy.
10 Everybody Is Eye Candy
In the series Doctor Odyssey, there’s a shared trait among its stars: their undeniable attractiveness. Don Johnson, Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale – each possesses an understated charm that transcends their personalities. They are reviving sensuality on prime-time television. Moreover, the guest stars maintain this high standard of beauty, even when they’ve supposedly been stranded at sea for an indeterminate amount of time. ABC has also paid special attention to the show’s visual aesthetics; not only is the cast captivating, but the ship’s design is equally immaculate as well.
Picture Perfect
Captain Robert Massey (Johnson) refers to the ship as a “heavenly sight.” Perhaps, it’s so beautiful that it feels like a dream. It’s breathtakingly stunning and incredibly captivating. It’s like being in love on a vessel – sometimes metaphorically, other times, quite literally. Even if the conversations are nonsensical, you can always turn off the sound and appreciate the glamour of it all. Despite any negative opinions, it’s hard to argue with its picturesque beauty.
9 Joshua Jackson Plays Another Loveable Hearbreaker
The man has been stealing hearts since 1992. Charlie Conway in Mighty Ducks, Pacey Witter in Dawson’s Creek, Cole Lockhart in The Affair, and Dan Gallagher in Fatal Attraction – he cannot be stopped. There’s a likability he brings to all of his characters, even when they’re awful. Dr. Max Bankman played by anyone else would be pretentious and annoying, but Jackson makes him impossible to hate.
McPacey Forever
Swap McDreamy for a new Thursday night physician on the water…Pacey has returned, but this time with a medical background and an expansive boat. The charm of Joshua Jackson is undeniable. And if you haven’t witnessed him in white trousers yet, just wait. Though this may be his least expected career move, we can’t help but be excited about it. Aww!
8 There’s a Love Triangle, Because of Course There Is
As a movie critic, let me express that it takes no time at all for the medical trio to morph into an emotionally charged love triangle. For years, Nurse Tristan Silva (Teale) harbored feelings for his colleague, Nurse Avery Morgan (Soo). In a surprising turn of events, Max openly confronts him about these feelings and within mere seconds, they’re locked in a dance-off. Before you can blink an eye, their lips are locked, and Max’s tongue is dancing with Avery’s. Tristan reprimands Max for breaking the unspoken bro code, but soon enough, Tristan finds himself kissing Avery. And so, we find ourselves on a rollercoaster ride that will be these three’s entangled love lives.
Choose a Side
Admittedly not a “relationship person,” Avery holds all the power in this threesome. One episode she’s with Tristan and the next episode she’s with Max. It’s a constant seesaw and neither man is going to give up. So will she pick Tristan or Max? We will watch until Season 22 to find out.
7 Over the Top Usual Over-the-Top Flair
In a style characteristic of Ryan Murphy, Doctor Odyssey breaks norms with its plotlines, characters, and writing, making it excessively captivating. The unusual medical cases and extravagant settings give off a “grand scale” vibe. Rather than presenting one peculiar health emergency per episode, it presents four for maximum impact, creating an intense experience of scripted television.
The Drama Boat
Embark on an extraordinary journey, where everyday drama is amplified times twelve, blended with a strong dose of romantic undercurrents, and stirred up with a tempestuous weather system. Welcome to The Odyssey – a voyage far from the ordinary sunny day surgeries! Here, we operate not just in calm waters, but amidst the tumultuous sea of chaos. Passion is omnipresent, permeating every corner. An outbreak of Syphilis necessitates administering penicillin to no less than forty-five crew members. Brace yourself for a Titanic-themed week – a spectacle you won’t want to miss!
6 Nonsensical, but Simple and Easy to Follow
One enjoyable aspect of this series is its lack of requiring deep thought, as nothing seems to align logically. For instance, Max Bankman might be an imposter since he boarded the ship without presenting identification – such is his charm. Moreover, Max and Avery appear to be hastily dressing up when summoned for a patient’s aid. Handwashing apparently isn’t essential in this universe. Essentially, Doctor Odyssey offers an escapist adventure that deviates from our everyday lives, which is part of its charm.
Brainless Fun
In one scene, a friendly strip poker game involving staff members labeled as “boys, butches, and bis” takes place, leaving viewers momentarily puzzled about who’s in charge – the captain tossed his underwear onto the table! However, that encapsulates the unique charm of this series: an emphasis on aesthetics. Unlike other shows with complicated storylines, this one avoids leaving you bewildered. It’s only when Captain Massey seems distressed that everyone else remains calm, allowing them to continue enjoying their time aboard the ship.
5 Cameos, so Many Cameos
Every seven days on the cruise liner, a unique theme emerges, bringing fresh faces and a new wave of passengers. The shows are titled according to these themes as well, such as “Singles Week” or “Plastic Surgery Week”. Essentially, it’s like a grown-up summer camp, but thus far, no children have been aboard – we’re keeping our fingers crossed! It seems the stars of yesteryear, paying tribute to The Love Boat, continue to visit us in abundance.
All Aboard
Many recognizable individuals embark on The Odyssey each week, playing roles as romantic interests, VIPs, returning passengers, high society members, wellness experts, and more. It’s always thrilling to wonder who will join the cast next! So far, we’ve welcomed Rachel Dratch, Shania Twain, Gina Gershon, Justin Jedlica, Laura Harrier, and Chord Overstreet. However, there are still exciting appearances from Kelsea Ballerini, John Stamos, and Cheyenne Jackson to anticipate – and that’s just the beginning of who has been announced.
4 The Wackiest Medical Emergencies
Instead of ordinary scrapes and bumps, it’s about severe injuries like penile fractures and needing dialysis machines. At one point, someone’s nose detaches completely and ends up in a pool. A man overindulges on shrimp at a buffet to the point where he suffers from iodine poisoning. It’s like the untamed, chaotic frontier, but in an aquatic setting.
911 on Crack
In certain instances, the stakes are critical, yet those attending aren’t always in traditional medical attire. Often, they’re just wearing regular clothes with a pair of gloves. The hygiene and safety measures on The Odyssey seem dubious at best, lacking even an anesthesiologist. Despite these questionable conditions, we are unfazed. We’re here for it.
3 Guilty Pleasure
The highly-anticipated steamy romance novel, “Doctor Odyssey,” sets sail with a bold, sexy narrative. It’s confident and unapologetic about its steaminess. This book is loud and proud, offering an exciting mix of medical drama and intense sexual tension among the crew members. You can relax knowing that amidst the chaos of an extraordinary medical emergency, it will be skillfully resolved, all while Don Johnson captivates in his Captain’s hat.
Escaping Reality
Unlike most medical dramas, “Doctor Odyssey” deviates from the usual stressful and somber tone. Instead, it offers an engrossing, almost surreal drama that’s hard to tear your eyes away from – much like a reality show on a binge-worthy day. It’s a guilty pleasure, akin to indulging in chocolate cake on a Thursday, but who could resist such captivating entertainment?
2 Soap Opera on a Boat
Max Bankman, a physician with a peculiar phobia of needles, reveals this quirk to Avery shortly after their brief introduction. Meanwhile, Tristan harbors feelings for Avery but seems to date a new woman each week. The Captain, who’s still grieving the loss of his wife to cancer, is inundated with female attention. This unfolds like an episode of ‘Days of Our Lives’, except on a boat.
Where Everything is Better
Doctor Odyssey truly draws strength from the sea, and Murphy takes full advantage of this raw power. The ship and the ocean play pivotal roles, exhibiting a dramatic flair that is unparalleled.
1 It Won’t Change Your Life, but It Will Become Part of It
Knowing the general plot of the upcoming episode doesn’t mean you can predict what will transpire next. New characters constantly appear, each bringing their unique dose of unpredictability. So, be prepared for surprises!
For the Dreamers
As a movie enthusiast, let me tell you, this show isn’t exactly life-altering, but it’s the kind that gradually weaves itself into your daily routines and thoughts. The Captain sets the tone in the first episode when he tells Max that every guest is a dreamer, and he’s there to be their guardian angel. It leaves you pondering if this show’s world, reminiscent of The Odyssey, might just be a form of heaven or if Dr. Bankman is still grappling with the lingering effects of Covid-induced dreams. Time will reveal the answers.
