The popular TV show Reacher, which has been running, is derived from a collection of novels, novellas, and short stories written by British author Jim Grant under the pen name Lee Child. This series revolves around the main character, a former military investigator, who drifts from one adventure to another. As of now, it comprises 29 books with one compilation of short stories. The first book was released in 1997, and the latest addition hit the shelves in October 2024. The 30th installment is scheduled for launch in November 2025.

Each season of the show adapts a specific Reacher novel. The first season, titled “Killing Floor”, is based on the initial book in the series, while the second season, “Bad Luck and Trouble”, corresponds to the 11th novel. As for the third season, it follows the events of “Persuader”, which is the seventh book in the series. The creative team, led by Nick Santora, generally stays faithful to the source material; however, they occasionally introduce some creative adjustments to keep the narrative relevant and contemporary.

Generally speaking, the action series appeals to a wide range of viewers. Yet, some nuanced elements found particularly in the show Reacher may be picked up only by those familiar with the original books.

In the second season’s episode titled “What Happens in Atlantic City,” Jack Reacher incidentally brings up that he encountered an individual named James Barr the previous year. This seemingly insignificant tidbit is actually quite significant, as Barr turns out to be a crucial character in the novel “One Shot.” In this story, Barr is a former U.S. Army Infantry Sniper who stands accused of murdering five individuals in Indianapolis.

The “One Shot” Chapter Is Over

In the storyline of the series, it’s clear that the events depicted in the One Shot chapter have concluded, as Reacher has likely encountered James Barr previously and resolved any issues, thus the show won’t delve into this particular book. This alignment with Tom Cruise’s portrayal of Jack Reacher in his movie (with Joseph Sikora playing Barr) makes sense since there’s an abundance of material to cover that doesn’t require repetition.

Jack Reacher’s Disdain for Boxing

In the first season, Jack Reacher engages in a fight with a boxer inside a tavern. He views boxing as contrived before delivering three decisive blows to knock out his opponent, one of which was below the belt line. Notably, this scene is not depicted in Killing Floor, the novel upon which the series is based; instead, it takes place in Bad Luck and Trouble.

When it comes to action, Reacher is spot-on and receives an excellent “A” for entertainment. However, he wouldn’t achieve this if he always played by the rules. Instead, Reacher thrives on winning through any means possible, so don’t count on him to surrender his weapon for a fair fist fight. His disdain for boxing suggests a more profound aversion towards regulations in general. The ex-military investigator tends to follow his own code of conduct.

Paulie’s Nationality

One of the standout moments from Season 3 features the imposing character, Paulie, portrayed by Olivier Richters, also known as “The Dutch Giant.” On the show, his character goes by Paulie van Hoeven, reflecting that Richters is indeed Dutch. However, in the book, he is referred to as Paul Masserella, an Italian character.

Reacher’s No Longer the Biggest Guy in the Room

Changing Paulie’s character from Italian to Dutch could be an appropriate tribute to the actor, considering Olivier Richters might not have been proficient in an Italian accent, given his background as a bodybuilder and film actor. Moreover, the TV version of Paulie is significantly taller than the book version, who is described as being only slightly larger than Jack Reacher.

Lee Child subtly appears in Season 1, but his presence might go unnoticed unless you’re an avid fan of his books. Since Child isn’t often seen in public like Stephen King, only dedicated readers would recognize him. So far, he has commended most aspects, and we anticipate numerous tales on screen, mirroring the books’ richness.

In the third season, when I first meet Zachary Beck, it’s disclosed that his reticent spouse, Elizabeth Beck, had passed away long ago – a twist not present in the book where she plays a significant role as a key supporting character. In the novel, she shares more screen time with Reacher than Richard, Beck’s son, and often provides him with crucial information. At times, the books subtly suggest a triangular relationship among Reacher, Zachary, and Elizabeth, although this suggestion is never explicitly confirmed on the page.

Lizzy Is Missed

Removing Elizabeth Beck from the story opens up an opportunity for a touching father-son dynamic between Reacher and Richard. However, it’s debatable whether the narrative would have been even more engaging if Elizabeth had been present. This vibrant Prime Video series, graced by the stoic, imposing character of Alan Ritchson, effortlessly blends action, intrigue, and romance. It would have added a delightful touch to witness Reacher courting Elizabeth instead of Susan Duffy, whose chemistry with our protagonist seems less convincing according to many viewers.

Despite being known for discarding his clothes carelessly, Reacher surprisingly values his portable toothbrush dearly. In Season 3, he quickly grabs it when federal agents arrive at his motel room, and in Season 2, he becomes quite irate when some criminals damage it. Book enthusiasts recognize this as a significant detail from “The Affair,” where the toothbrush is one of Reacher’s few cherished belongings, along with an ATM card and identification.

Where’s the Toothpaste?

The show makes a smart move by revealing this information ahead of time as it highlights Reacher’s minimalistic lifestyle. Despite being taller than most, he prefers not to offend with potential bad breath from his elevated mouth. However, one wonders where he acquires the necessities like toothpaste since we seldom see him buying everyday items. Instead, he seems to only visit clothing stores.

Initially, Lee Child crafts the Jack Reacher novels with limited dialogue for Reacher, highlighting that his actions are more impactful than words. Consequently, the phrase “Reacher remains silent” is frequently used throughout the series. This is evident right from the start, as shown in the opening scenes where Reacher confronts a thug in a parking lot and is subsequently detained by law enforcement.

Mouthy Reacher

In my humble opinion, Lee Child’s iconic character, Jack Reacher, tends to be rather verbose on the small screen. The dialogue he delivers is sharp and witty, no doubt about that. However, I personally believe that a more reserved approach would have added to the enigmatic allure of this character, as portrayed in the books. His propensity for chatter seems to dilute the intimidating mystery surrounding him. That being said, I’m not here to babble (contrary to Reacher). Nick Santora, the showrunner, is the best judge of what works for this adaptation.

Reacher’s Obsession with Blues Music

In the first season, the teacher frequently mentions various blues musicians during his conversations with Roscoe. The show only touches upon this subject briefly, but it plays a significant role in the novel. According to the books, he has memorized hundreds of blues songs. This aspect is explored more thoroughly in the thirteenth book titled “Gone Tomorrow”.

A Perfect Way to Unwind

Discussing blues singers may appear tangential, but it subtly underscores Reacher’s exceptional memory, a trait repeatedly emphasized in the books for fans to appreciate. Just as he chooses paths less trodden by others, he also prefers music that is off the mainstream radar.

After Reacher manages to gain entry into Beck’s residence, additional characters are brought in. Among them is Annette, portrayed as a housekeeper who endures heavy cleaning tasks around the grand mansion. It doesn’t take long for her true identity to be unveiled – she turns out to be an undercover ATF agent. In the book, there isn’t any mention of a French maid; instead, this character and her role were created for the show so that Reacher, who has a French mother, could briefly use his language skills.

It All Stems from Commercialization

The reason Jack Reacher has a French mother is because Lee Child wanted to keep his book series profitable. To make Jack Reacher more appealing in France, he later revealed that the former military policeman was born to a French woman.
