As a seasoned adventurer who’s journeyed through many a fantastical realm, I can confidently say that Wildermyth has left an indelible mark on my gaming adventures. The intricate blend of strategy, role-playing, and mythology is truly a unique experience.
Are you someone who prefers exploring epic journeys filled with unexpected events or enjoys the thrill of creating a character at random? Do you appreciate role-playing games that emphasize strategic gameplay? If your answer is affirmative to any of these, then I’m happy to recommend Wildermyth as a game you would enjoy!
For an enhanced gaming experience, I’ve compiled ten strategies that will transform any casual player into a true champion!
Explore the Overland Map
Similar to numerous Role-Playing Games (RPGs), Wildermyth encourages a sense of adventure by offering rewards. Construct defensive structures, collect resources, fight off adversaries, and accomplish additional tasks along the way while advancing the narrative.
Instead of just following a straight path, it’s beneficial to delve into all corners of the map. This approach will yield additional resources and provide diverse paths for your character’s growth. Additionally, you’ll gather extra points in the form of legacies by finishing different tasks.
Nurture Relationships
As you advance in the game, you’ll form connections with various non-player characters. Cultivating these bonds is crucial for your character’s personal development.
As a seasoned gamer, I’ve found that Wildermyth’s dynamics are intriguingly interwoven with Friendships, Enmities, and Romances. These relationships offer unique advantages on the battlefield, keeping my tactics fresh and adaptable. My Friends can perform daring Maneuvers against foes, while Rivals might retaliate when I pull off one of these Maneuvers. Lastly, my Lovers gain a bonus damage against any adversaries who attack their beloved partners.
Build Strategically
In Wildermyth, both fortifications (Defenses) and resource centers (Stations) play a crucial role in gameplay. Defenses aid you in warding off attacks, while Stations provide valuable resources after each story segment, enabling you to enhance your gear.
Begin gathering resources well ahead of time, and ensure there is at least one defensive unit stationed on every tile. This tactic will prove beneficial in the subsequent phases, helping you minimize unwanted resource waste.
Recruit New Allies
In the thrilling narrative of Wildermyth, I discover new companions to join my squad as the adventure unfolds. The perfect addition to my team harmonizes well, making their class selection crucial. Remember, heroes can either hang up their boots or meet an untimely end, so each choice matters significantly.
In most cases, it’s beneficial to engage as many people as possible during recruitment. This way, you can handle various tasks simultaneously, a method that Wildermyth gameplay tends to favor and reward.
Understand How Damage Works
In Wildermyth, the amount of damage inflicted during combat is based on simple mathematics. To calculate the total damage and any applicable bonuses, you subtract the target’s armor or warding from the result to find the actual damage. Piercing attacks reduce the target’s armor or warding before applying the damage. Temporary health is depleted first, followed by the normal health pool. The remaining actual damage is then added to the target’s injury. If the injury equals or surpasses the target’s health, the target collapses. If the target was a hero, they might be faced with a ‘Mortal Choice’, which could lead to permanent injuries or even death.
In essence, a stunt serves a similar purpose as a critical hit does. It not only inflicts more damage, but also triggers special combat effects when we’re talking about elemental stunts.
In my gaming world, my character’s Armor takes hits before I do, lessening the physical damage I receive. But here’s the twist: if an attack reduces the damage to nil, it doesn’t just stop there – it rips through my Armor by 1 point instead. And guess what? Certain attacks have a ‘Shred’ effect, which gnaws away at my Armor after they’ve dealt their damage.
In terms of defensive measures against magical assaults, you’ll primarily rely on a protective mechanism known as Warding. Each instance of Warding is capable of withstanding 1 unit of damage before shattering, however, it regenerates completely at the beginning of your following turn.
Keep Your Cover
In Wildermyth’s battle system, the positioning of your characters plays a significant role, similar to tabletop role-playing games. If you position a character behind a protective barrier, symbolized by one or more diamonds above their head, they receive an enhanced defense boost during fights. Furthermore, when two heroes stand side-by-side (either horizontally or vertically), they suffer less damage from both physical and magical attacks, a tactic referred to as “Walling.
Deal with Incursions
Each Wildermyth chapter typically features an event known as an incursion – this is a timed invasion where you can prepare ahead. During an incursion, a group of enemies starts marching towards your party. As they advance, they demolish every location on their path, including resource buildings and settlements. The longer the incursion lasts, the more devastation caused by the enemy horde.
When an incursion is over, any damaged tiles will transform back into Wilderness tiles, effectively losing all progress made on them. To prevent resource loss, ensure you’ve set up sufficient defenses along your borders, essentially reinforcing your frontiers.
Modding is Good!
The community of players creating modifications (mods) for Wildermyth is both lively and capable. These mods enhance the gameplay experience by unlocking its hidden possibilities. Through the Wildermyth Steam Workshop, you can experiment with a variety of these mods, which offer adjustments to how you engage with the game, providing additional content.
There are mods for
- Colour saturation
- New hairstyles
- New, unique, romantic quests
- New character traits
Mod your game how you see fit, or go the vanilla route – the choice is yours!
Mystics are Broken (?)
Mystics possess a distinctive, captivating gameplay method. With their power called Interfusion, they can mold objects and conjure magic. The environment in which a Mystic finds themselves influences the results of their Interfusion ability.
Mystics come in different shapes and sizes, and while they may not be primarily focused on dealing high damage (though it’s possible to build them that way by enhancing their power), they excel at managing the battlefield. They can create and adjust hazards that can either limit enemy movement or give your team an advantage. It’s generally wise to have a well-equipped Mystic ready on standby.
Your Legacy Matters
In Wildermyth, the Legacy system keeps track of your characters and their lasting impact. Just as earlier game characters did, the tale you weave will endure and continue to exist.
Characters that conclude their journey by retiring or successfully completing a campaign will be included in your lasting tribute. Similarly, characters who perished in the final conflict or were honored with a tomb during earlier stages of the campaign, will also become part of your legacy.
Instead of using Legacy Points to recruit new characters, Legacy Heroes will be available for recruitment in subsequent gameplay sessions. These heroes can participate in multiple playthroughs, and as they either survive or retire, they’ll advance to the next Legacy Level. Furthermore, any Elemental Weapons these characters possess can be crafted for use in future campaigns.
Venture into the world of Wildermyth, brimming with fresh journeys and deep interactions tailored to your decisions. Feel free to explore and play as you wish, shaping your own story within this captivating game.
