As a longtime fan of animated series and video games, I must say that 2021 was a golden year for me. The release of Arcane, based on League of Legends, truly captured my heart. Being a gamer myself, I could appreciate the intricate detail and faithful adaptation from the game to the screen.
2024 stood out as an exceptional year for television, with a host of captivating series like “Man on the Inside,” the live-action version of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” and “Nobody Wants This” gracing our screens. But it was also a bittersweet time, as many cherished (and not so cherished) TV shows bid farewell. Some ended gracefully, while others were cut short prematurely.
2024 marked the conclusion of various series across genres such as Westerns, adult cartoons, and horror. As we bid farewell to this year, we’ve put together a roundup of some outstanding and less-than-stellar TV finales that graced our screens in 2024.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ (2019)
The TV show “The Umbrella Academy”, modeled after the comics of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, centers around a group of super-gifted, adopted siblings known as the Hargreeves family. These extraordinary individuals come together to prevent an impending apocalypse (and subsequently, multiple other apocalypses). Featuring standout performances from actors like Robert Sheehan as Klaus and Elliot Page as Viktor, the series garnered much acclaim among viewers. Regrettably, by season 3, the show started to lose its initial charm, and when its final season aired, it was met with criticism, some might even say, downright villainous.
A Disastrous Ending
As a dedicated cinephile, I must confess that this year in August, I eagerly awaited the premiere of the fourth season. It boasted an impressive lineup of guest stars, but unfortunately, it seems that was one of the few aspects about the season that resonated with viewers positively. Instead of providing answers to lingering questions, it posed more questions, leaving fans feeling perplexed. In the end, they collectively agreed that the show deserved a more coherent finale as its swan song.

‘The Good Doctor’ (2017)
The TV series The Good Doctor, which is modeled after a Korean production and features Freddie Highmore in a leading role, follows the personal and professional journey of Dr. Shaun Murphy, an autistic surgeon. Initially, doctors at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital were reluctant to have him join their team, but with his exceptional abilities and the backing of Dr. Glassman (played by Richard Schiff), they eventually welcomed him as one of their own.
Over the course of the show, Shaun got married, had a family, and excelled at the hospital. He encountered numerous hurdles, dealing with the health concerns of his loved ones and managing a group of medical trainees. By the end of the series, Shaun figured out how to transform from a good doctor into an exceptional one.
Not All Good Reactions
Since it first aired, “The Good Doctor” has become known for its meme-worthy moments, yet some find issue with how autism is portrayed in the show. On the other hand, many view it as one of the standout TV shows from the 2010s, commending Freddie Highmore’s performance. The series finale was generally well-liked, and a spin-off titled “The Good Lawyer” was planned to continue the story. Regrettably, ABC opted not to proceed with the series development.

‘Velma’ (2023)
As a predecessor to the beloved series Scooby-Doo, the mature animated show Velma faced difficulties in attracting viewers. Despite being deemed too unappealing for even hate-watching, the series centered around Velma as she tackled mysteries, navigated high school issues, and unfortunately portrayed her as a morally questionable character. The show’s peculiar humor, pessimistic tone, and flawed character development left many astonished when it was renewed for a second season. Unfortunately, this season (including a holiday special) would mark the end of Velma’s run.
No Mystery Why It Was Canceled
From the debut of the series, fans of Scooby-Doo have been displeased with the scarcity of Scooby and significant character transformations, while numerous others found its humor awkward or just not amusing. Velma has certainly made an impact on the Scooby-Doo lore, but it’s an impact that some viewers hope to erase from memory soon.
7
‘Yellowstone’ (2018)
In the show titled “Yellowstone“, Kevin Costner portrays John Dutton, with Luke Grimes and Wes Bentley playing his sons Kayce and Jamie respectively, while Kelly Reilly takes on the role of his daughter Beth. The story revolves around this family who run a ranch situated near Yellowstone National Park. Their lives are marked by ongoing disputes with the park, neighboring Native American reservation, real estate developers, and other neighboring entities. The narrative also encompasses political intrigue, murder, and intense familial strife, making it no surprise that this contemporary Western drama has drawn a substantial, passionate viewership.
Plenty to Watch Next
Despite encountering criticism during its fifth and concluding season, the show’s popularity continued to be strong. Luckily, multiple spin-offs of the series have been planned, and moreover, the showrunner, Taylor Sheridan, has revealed an intriguing new project that seems promising.
6
‘Snowpiercer’ (2020)
In a refreshed take on the 2013 movie, the gripping drama Snowpiercer unfolds in a frozen, post-apocalyptic world, where survivors reside aboard a perpetually moving train to avoid freezing. However, the train’s social hierarchy is just as treacherous as the cold outside. The narrative commences with Andre Layton, portrayed by Daveed Diggs, being summoned from the Tail section (the lower class) to investigate a murder. As events unfold, he becomes entangled in a web of secrets surrounding Jennifer Connelly’s character, Melanie Cavill (the Voice of the Train), and Sean Bean’s elusive Mr. Wilford.
An Unexpectedly Warm Ending
Following its cancellation on TNT, the series found a new home at AMC for its farewell episode. Though the conclusion was generally positive, it left many aspects up for interpretation. For now, fans can only hope for a sequel, but at the moment, there are no definite plans being made.
5
‘Sweet Tooth’ (2021)
In its roots, Sweet Tooth is a comic book series that unfolds in a universe inhabited by human-animal hybrid creatures. This unusual blend of species occurred post an incident called The Great Crumble, which coincidentally triggered the spread of the H5G9 virus, also known as the Sick. The narrative primarily revolves around Gus, a young deer hybrid, who embarks on a journey alongside Tommy Jepperd (or Big Man), seeking to uncover his past. Throughout this adventure, he encounters various hybrids, hunters, and researchers, who believe he could hold the key to ending the Sickness.
A Bittersweet Ending
In the third season, we saw numerous deviations from the original comics, introducing a significant new figure and subtly altering the destiny of an existing one. While some viewers found the conclusion bittersweet, others expressed dissatisfaction, feeling that there were still several loose ends left untied.

‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’ (2024)
As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the poignant conclusion of the legendary zombie saga, “The Walking Dead”, in 2022. However, the void left by its departure was swiftly filled with an array of enticing spin-offs. One such captivating series that instantly grabbed my attention was none other than “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live”. This gripping narrative revolved around the charismatic character of Rick Grimes, portrayed by Andrew Lincoln, and the resilient Michonne, brilliantly played by Danai Gurira. Spanning a single season, this riveting show delved into the post-Jadis fate of Rick and the extraordinary measures taken by Michonne to reunite with him.
Will Continue to Live On
Without a doubt, there’s usually room for more narrative development, but with regard to “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live“, the story concluded in a fulfilling manner rather than continuing indefinitely. Although these characters may reappear in other shows, here their journey seemed conclusive and surprisingly touching.
3
‘Chucky’ (2021)
In the vein of the Child’s Play films, Chucky continues its storyline from Cult of Chucky, focusing on 14-year-old Jake Wheeler who grapples with school bullies, emerging sexuality, and a lethal doll. The narrative also delves into flashbacks to shed light on Chucky’s origins as a serial killer. Throughout the series, viewers have encountered different iterations of Chucky such as “Good Chucky” and “The Colonel.” As the plot unfolded, audiences witnessed an escalation in both the number and graphic nature of Chucky’s killings.
He Always Comes Back
Supporters were deeply disheartened when the show was taken off the air, starting a #BringBackChucky movement. Sadly, this effort didn’t manage to keep the series alive. Yet, the creator of Chucky, Dan Mancini, has reassured fans that Chucky “never stays down for long,” hinting that the character might resurface in the future, even though the show may have concluded its run.
2
‘Young Sheldon’ (2017)
After “The Big Bang Theory” concluded in 2019, viewers yearned for more. Their desire was fulfilled with “Young Sheldon,” a series delving into the childhood of child prodigy Sheldon Cooper. This coming-of-age sitcom was narrated by Jim Parsons, who played Sheldon originally, and featured Iain Armitage portraying his younger version. The show depicted the ups and downs of Sheldon’s intellect, as well as the unsuccessful attempts of his family and friends to comprehend him.
A Tear-Jerker Ending
Although largely comedic, the series had some upsetting episodes, and the ending, which featured an important funeral, was among the most heart-wrenching. While it answered many viewer questions, it also left a few unresolved. Fortunately, some of these might be revisited in the upcoming spin-off, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
1
‘Arcane’ (2021)
In 2021, the Netflix series Arcane, set in the world of League of Legends (LOL), surprised many with its success. The show didn’t require viewers to be familiar with the game, as it primarily followed the characters Vi and Jinx, portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell, who found themselves on opposing sides of a conflict between the city of Piltover above and the undercity of Zaun below. As the story unfolded, elements like Hextech, Shimmer, and parallel dimensions became key aspects, sparking excitement for a potential second season and widespread approval.
An Ending, but Not the End
The highly priced animated show titled Arcane was meticulously planned from the start, and when the trailer for season 2 was unveiled, it was clear that this would be the series’ final chapter. However, this doesn’t imply that the story has concluded, as there are still many aspects of the League of Legends universe left to delve into, such as a forthcoming spin-off focusing on pirate themes.
