As a seasoned crime enthusiast with a penchant for delving into the darker corners of humanity, I find myself captivated by the Menendez Brothers‘ story – a tale that has been retold time and again through various mediums. From the dramatic reenactments to the in-depth documentaries, each portrayal offers a unique perspective on this infamous case.
Ever since Ryan Murphy’s series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” debuted at the number one spot on Netflix, the Menendez brothers have been making headlines once again.
However, the well-known instance of Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were found guilty of murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills residence back in 1989, has been depicted numerous times on true-crime television shows throughout the years.
As more time passes since the infamous mistrial and retrial of the Menendez brothers in 1994, followed by their imprisonment in 1996, public opinion seems to be evolving. You see, they’ve been asserting that their father, José Menendez, subjected them to both sexual and physical abuse, with their mother choosing to turn a blind eye. Now, it appears their habeas corpus petition from 2023 is under scrutiny by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office. If new evidence surfaces, there might be a reconsideration of their life sentences. As a gamer, I can’t help but feel that this could potentially be a game-changer for them.
Victims or villains?
As a passionate gamer, I’ve just finished binge-watching Netflix’s chilling series, Monsters, along with other interpretations of the Menendez brothers’ tale. Now it’s up to me, and fellow viewers, to decide if justice was truly served or if it was tainted by unfairness.
Menendez Brothers: Victims or Villains
The four-part Fox Nation documentary aired in March 2024, showcasing testimony from Lyle Menendez who was behind bars, prosecutor Pamela Bozanich, and their attorney Mark Geragos. Additionally, TV host and comedian Rosie O’Donnell made an appearance, as she had interviewed Lyle while he was in prison the previous year in 2023. Former Saturday Night Live cast member Darrell Hammond also featured, advocating for the brothers’ release from prison.
Suburban Nightmare: The Menendez Brothers
2022’s Tubi documentary begins by playing the 1989 emergency call made by Lyle Menendez, stating that someone had viciously killed his parents. However, the narrative shifts to portray José Menendez as a stern father who eventually became sexually abusive towards his sons. This film delves into the brothers’ claim of self-defense for the murders, featuring dramatic recreations of José Menendez stalking his sons in their bedrooms and the gruesome killings of the parents in their Beverly Hills residence.
The Menendez Murders: Erik Tells All
2017 saw a gripping true-crime documentary from A&E Networks, centering on Erik Menendez’s perspective. For the first time in years, he shared his story of childhood abuse, a hidden truth within his family, via phone interviews. This, he claimed, was the motivation behind him and his brother committing the murder of their parents. Notable figures like CNN’s Larry King and renowned Associated Press trial reporter Linda Deutsch were also interviewed in this production, making it a significant cultural reference point.
Menendez: A Killing in Beverly Hills
1994 saw the airing of a CBS TV film titled “The Menendez Murders: A Case Study.” This movie wasn’t just an early exploration of the tragic story involving the Menendez brothers and their parents’ murder, but it was also one of the first TV films that centered around a high-profile case with a mistrial in its year. Directed by Larry Elikann, this four-hour production featured Damian Chapa as Lyle and Travis Fine portraying Eric. Edward James Olmos took on the role of José Menendez, while Beverly D’Angelo played his wife Kitty.
The Menendez Brothers
Following the tremendous success of Monsters on Netflix, the streaming service has revealed that The Menendez Documentary will soon be available, featuring the first interviews with Erik and Lyle Menendez in over decades. This documentary premiered on October 7th and offers a two-hour exploration of the brothers’ perspectives through extensive phone conversations. Produced by Campfire Studios and directed by Alejandro Hartmann from Argentina, this project aims to provide “new insights and a fresh perspective on a case that people believe they understand,” as stated by Netflix.
Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed
The three-part Peacock docuseries touches on the original Menendez brothers’ murder case, but links directly to their claims of family abuse with a new allegation against their father, José Menendez. The 2023 series, which premiered one month before Erik and Lyle filed their habeas petition, focused on former boy band Menudo member Roy Rosselló. The group was signed to a label deal by José, then president of RCA Records. In the docuseries, Rosselló talks about the alleged sexual abuse he endured from the band’s manager, Edgardo Diaz, and then another incident of sexual abuse involving José when Rosselló was 14 years old. The docuseries implies that Díaz offered Rosselló to Menendez as a means to seal the deal.
Menendez Brothers: Misjudged?
2022’s true-crime movie “Andrea De Brito Directorial Work” delves back into a recurring topic regarding the Menendez brothers’ trials: Was their murderous act driven by financial greed or persistent abuse? This production from Max includes authentic footage of the brothers, interwoven with Eric Phelps’ portrayal of Erik Menendez in re-enactment scenes.
Law and Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders
Although it’s not a factual documentary, this eight-episode NBC miniseries features Edie Falco portraying Leslie Abramson, who gained fame by defending Erik Menendez during his trial. Instead of focusing on what the young men did to their parents, she questioned why. This 2017 dramatization reenacts the daily courtroom struggles and the sensationalized media frenzy surrounding the trial. At the time, NBC advertised that it would unveil the “striking truth of what truly occurred when the cameras stopped rolling.
Truth and Lies: The Menendez Brothers – American Sons, American Murders
2017’s ABC documentary titled “Menendez: Blood Brothers” delved into the lives of the Menendez brothers, portraying them as playboys from Beverly Hills who tragically killed their own parents. The documentary aimed to unveil the concealed indicators that led to the Menendez family’s tragic downfall into chaos. To achieve this, it presented home videos, photographs, and testimonies from people acquainted with the Menendez family, as well as detectives, lawyers, and jurors who had been part of the sensational case.
Honor Thy Father and Mother: The True Story of the Menendez Murders
1994 saw Fox broadcasting their interpretation of the Menendez brothers’ crime and court case. The leading roles were played by James Farentino as José Menendez, Jill Clayburgh portraying Kitty Menendez, Billy Warlock as Lyle, and David Beron as Erik. Similar to the CBS movie mentioned below, this TV film faced criticism for being aired before the Menendez brothers’ retrial in 1996, which occurred after their initial mistrial.
