1923 Fans Can’t Stop Speculating: Will These Two Quotes Shape Spencer’s Season 2 Fate?

Given that the second season of the show airing in 2025, titled “1923“, is scheduled to start on February 23, I thought it was perfect timing to revisit Season 1. I’m glad I did because it refreshed my memory about the struggles the Dutton family is going through and Spencer’s mission to reunite with them. Interestingly, there are two quotes from Season 1 concerning Brandon Sklenar’s character that have been stuck in my mind lately, as I believe they could provide insights into his actions during this upcoming season of the “Yellowstone” spinoff.

Essentially, it’s clear that in Season 2, Spencer and Alex will be apart but heading towards Montana to reunite with the Duttons and each other. Additionally, Sklenar’s character’s struggle to return home adds tension, potentially leading to dramatic and distressing events, given that we know the hunter carries deep-seated demons within him.

While enjoying Season 1 again on Paramount+, I’ve found myself reflecting on two statements made by Cara and Alex regarding Spencer’s troubled past. It makes me ponder if this aspect of his character might present a significant hurdle in the upcoming episodes.

“This ranch and you’re legacy are in peril. War has descended upon this place and your family. Whatever war you fight within yourself must wait. You must come home and fight this one.” -Cara

At first, the words in the letter written by Cara, as penned by Helen Mirren, struck me forcefully when Spencer received it during his time of distress.

After finally watching 1923, it became clear to me why I adore it so much – it addresses one of my significant concerns about Yellowstone.

Essentially, by the close of Episode 3, the Dutton family faced grim circumstances. In Montana, they suffered an attack that left Jacob hurt, John dead, and Jack injured. Several others were also struck, leaving the family in a state of confusion and disarray. This turmoil prompted Jacob and Cara to conclude that Spencer should return home.

Instead of her writing a letter, Helen Mirren’s character communicated to James’ youngest child that he should prioritize his family over personal problems. This aspect became more prominent towards the end of Season 1 and is expected to significantly influence Spencer in Season 2.

He received the letter several months following its composition, and I believe he’s experiencing guilt over his extended absence. Furthermore, his aunt has expressed disapproval of his avoidance tactics regarding his unresolved trauma.

Listening to this, it seems to me that in Season 2, Spencer could confront his inner struggles directly and simultaneously navigate his journey back home. The conversation with Alex on this subject certainly strengthens this assumption for me.

“There’s something you should know about me. I’m a very jealous lover. I will not share you with your demons. So we must find them and chase them all away.” -Alex

In Episode 4, a single episode following Cara’s mailing of the letter, it comes to light that Spencer had never read any of the messages she’d written him throughout the years. To persuade him, Alex then quotes the statement mentioned earlier.

Cara’s letter is compelling Spencer to return home, but I’m optimistic that Alex’s advice will encourage him to confront the secrets he’s been harboring for so long. Without Alex there to support him, Sklenar’s character might struggle and be pushed to deal with his inner battles. However, I’m praying he recalls what she suggested because I believe it will provide him strength.

In Season 2, I’d like to delve deeper into Spencer’s character, particularly exploring his personal battles and turmoil that seem to persist, especially those stemming from his military service during World War I. Furthermore, his sense of belonging within his family is also a significant issue he grapples with. I hope we get to witness him tackling these challenges squarely and finding resolution.

No more compartmentalizing.

In line with Cara’s suggestion, it’s crucial that he deals with his internal conflict, and as Alex put it, exorcising those personal demons. This action could lead to a more content life for him and further development as a character within the Dutton family. Moreover, such a journey would not only contribute to his personal growth but also make for captivating television, considering his global travels to reunite with his family. Here’s wishing that Spencer takes this path in Season 2 of 1923.
