As a devoted admirer of Priyanka Chopra‘s illustrious career, I find myself consistently amazed by her transformative roles and unwavering dedication to her craft. Aitraaz, undeniably, stands as one of her most iconic performances, propelling her into the limelight and paving the way for future successes.
15 years ago, Aitraaz served as a pivotal moment in my acting journey, showcasing one of the most daring portrayals I’ve ever given as Sonia. As we commemorate its 20th anniversary on November 12, 2024, renowned producer Subhash Ghai shared that initially, I harbored reservations about securing heroine roles following Aitraaz. However, after Rakesh Roshan and Hrithik Roshan watched six unfinished reels of my performance, they cast me in Krrish.
Reflecting on a conversation with HT City, I shared my memories of how the film “Aitraaz” paved the way for Priyanka Chopra’s role in “Krrish” (2006). Prior to the release of “Aitraaz”, Rakesh Roshan and Hrithik Roshan confided in me that they were searching for the female lead in their upcoming project, “Krrish”.
I mentioned to Rakesh during our filming that he should take a look at an early version of Aitraaz, specifically focusing on six to seven reels featuring my performance. Intrigued by what he saw, the director decided to cast me in Krrish the following day. To show her appreciation, Priyanka sent me a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
Moreover, Ghai mentioned that following the movie’s premiere, Priyanka, who portrayed the captivating character Sonia in Aitraaz, was the center of much discussion and garnered extensive appreciation from audiences all over.
Initially, I myself harbored reservations about embracing the role, due to concerns that it might pigeonhole me into a stereotypical “vamp” character. However, it was only through the persuasive efforts of director Ghai that I eventually agreed to take on the part.
After her performance, she subsequently earned multiple accolades, as he stated. In his view, taking on roles with a darker side enables actors to delve deeper into their acting abilities.
Initially, Priyanka’s first couple of movies didn’t do too great, but it was the film “Aitraaz” that significantly boosted her fame. Mukul Anand acknowledged that roles like these, which are strong and assertive, have a long-lasting effect.
In the movie, Priyanka took on the role of Sonia Roy, a cunning and money-motivated character, and was the most captivating aspect of the film’s narrative.
The film tackled the sensitive issue of workplace sexual harassment, a theme that had rarely been explored in Indian cinema before. Aitraaz also starred Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor Khan in pivotal roles.
In her career, Priyanka Chopra has a number of intriguing upcoming ventures, such as the second season of Citadel, The Bluff, and Heads of State.
