2013 Cult Classic Coherence 2 Gets Massive Update Creator From James Ward Byrkit

As a cinephile who’s been around the block a few times, I can confidently say that the 2013 gem “Coherence” is one of those rare films that truly stands out from the crowd. It’s a testament to writer-director James Ward Byrkit‘s ingenuity and the power of low-budget, indie filmmaking. The movie’s intricate plot twists, thought-provoking themes, and raw performances have made it a cult favorite, and I for one can’t get enough of it.

In 2013, the filmmaker Richard Ayoade premiered his thought-provoking science fiction thriller, a low-budget movie filmed over five days that has since garnered a passionate cult following. With its exploration of reality, remorse, and free will, it’s a film you can watch multiple times and discover something fresh with each viewing. Over a decade later, news about a sequel was finally revealed in May, and we had the chance to chat with Ayoade about what fans can expect from this long-awaited continuation.

During a chat with MovieWeb recently, Byrkit shared insights about his latest project, “Shatter Belt”, and then delved into the distinctive filming approach of “Coherence” from 2013. Unlike typical movies that follow a script, “Coherence” relied on diagrams, key plot points, and misleading clues to capture genuine actor responses as they figured out what was happening. Given the success of this technique in “Coherence”, we wondered if Byrkit would stick with this method for his upcoming work, considering the wisdom in the saying: “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

You’ve asked a frequently posed question, and I believe the answer lies in a blend of formats. We need a script for actors and funding purposes initially, but when it comes to filming, I envision a unique setup reminiscent of an escape room or funhouse. The plan will be designed as an adventure for our actors, who won’t know the exact plot; they’ll have a possible scripted route, but we’ll encourage them to improvise and solve the mystery themselves. This way, we can capture the authenticity of their interactions and the reality as it unfolds.

Will Coherence 2 Be a Sequel or a Prequel?

This time, Byrkit collaborates with producer Kate Andrews, who was instrumental in getting the Netflix hit, “It’s What’s Inside“, off the ground. Together with Byrkit’s writing partner, Alex Manugian, they plan to revisit the world of “Coherence“, similar to the Twilight Zone, to delve into themes like consciousness, reality, and the human condition. However, it’s still uncertain whether “Coherence 2” will be a sequel, prequel, or something different entirely. Although Byrkit didn’t reveal much, he hinted that fans of the original film will quickly recognize some familiar elements in the upcoming movie.

The upcoming production will feature a new set of characters and a fresh narrative, but they’ll be closely intertwined. You’ll immediately spot familiar aspects that are extensions and recurring motifs. I don’t want to reveal too many details because we’re in the process of finessing the story, and we’re genuinely thrilled about the direction it’s taking.

As huge fans of the movie “Coherence,” we’re eagerly anticipating what director James Ward Byrkit and his team have planned next for us. In the interim, don’t forget to explore his latest series, “Shatter Belt,” a mesmerizing blend of “The Twilight Zone” that promises an extraordinary journey unlike any other. You can catch all four episodes right now on your preferred Video On Demand platform.
