With May drawing near, the Met Gala has been revealing additional information about its upcoming annual fashion event, such as the members of the host committee and the specific dress code to be observed.
The engaging theme “Crafted Just for You” highlights the fashion-centric aspect of the show. The exhibition titled “Exquisite: Tailoring Black Style” promises an extensive exploration into the history of Black dandy fashion, a trend of sophisticated Black men’s attire that can be traced back to the 19th century. The costume display will be organized into twelve sections: Possession, Impact, Refinement, Masquerade, Liberation, Advocacy, Respectability, Jive, Lineage, Attractiveness, Chic, and Globalism.
At the upcoming event, British designer Grace Wales Bonner, Edward Enninful (formerly of British Vogue), and iconic figure Dapper Dan will be added to the team alongside co-chairs A$AP Rocky, Pharrell, Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, Lebron James, and Anna Wintour. Additionally, André 3000, Simone Biles, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Lee, and Olivier Rousteing are also part of the group.
In an interview with Business of Fashion, Andrew Bolton, Curator at the Costume Institute, stated, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style is our first menswear exhibition from our department in over 20 years.” He further added that this show also underscores our ongoing dedication to making our exhibitions more diverse, a commitment that aligns genuinely with The Costume Institute.
It’s no wonder that the Met Gala and its associated exhibit are now giving special attention to menswear, as this sector has experienced significant growth in recent years. The growing enthusiasm for fashion among men, expressed through digital platforms, along with the evolving ideas of masculinity presented by pioneering designers, are propelling the menswear industry forward.
Consequently, tailoring has gained more focus, influencing styles not just in men’s fashion but broadly speaking. A current illustration can be found in the choice of Doechii, a well-known rapper and 2025 committee member, who opted for a Thom Browne suit at the recent Grammy awards last Sunday. Similarly, Grace Wales Bonner, another committee member and designer, is reflecting this increasing interest with her innovative style that combines tailored shapes and sportswear – her FW25 collection features a partnership with Crombie Ltd, a traditional British brand renowned for its high-quality tailoring.
