2025 Oscars: Universal’s Film Empire Nabs Historic 25 Noms, Netflix Leads Individual List With 16

This year’s Oscar nominations saw affection distributed broadly among various distribution platforms. Traditional Hollywood studios and their subsidiaries joined forces with streaming services and independent distributors in receiving recognition.

On Tuesday, Netflix garnered the highest number of any single distributor, with a total of 16 nominations. This was largely due to “Emilia Pérez” being included in 13 categories, making it the most nominated film this year and breaking a new record for a non-English language film. Interestingly, it is only one nomination shy of the all-time record held by “All About Eve”, “Titanic”, and “La La Land”, each having received 14 nominations.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about A24’s impressive showing on the Academy’s list of top-nominated individual distributors. With a total of 14 nods, and an astounding 10 for “The Brutalist,” they have truly established themselves as a powerhouse in the industry.

With its Golden Globe sweep under its belt, “The Brutalist” is poised to capitalize on its front-runner status as it expands further into cinemas nationwide. Remarkably, it has already managed to earn an impressive $5.9 million, despite only being screened in a few hundred theaters so far. I can’t wait to see where this promising film takes us next!

As a passionate gamer, I’ve got to say, it feels like a dream come true being part of the cinematic success story that is Universal Pictures’ Wicked! This movie has been raking in nominations left and right, making it a double threat as both an awards darling and a blockbuster hit.

For years, I’ve heard whispers about the dwindling viewership for the Oscars due to the nominees being niche art-house films that only play in select markets. But Wicked has smashed that trend, earning over $800 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing film contending for Best Picture!

To top it off, Cynthia Erivo, who’s up for Best Actress, and Ariana Grande, nominated for Best Supporting Actress, have massive fan bases. Their star power could potentially draw in a whole new audience for the Oscars telecast, making it more exciting than ever!

Universal’s extensive film empire, consisting of Focus Features and DreamWorks Animation (the birthplace of the surprise hit “The Wild Robot”), broke records on Tuesday with a total of 25 nominations, marking its most successful showing yet. This surpassed last year’s previous record of 18 nominations, spearheaded by Christopher Nolan’s Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer”.

In 2024, Universal Pictures and Focus Features both took the lead with 13 and 11 nominations respectively in this year’s awards. This marks the third consecutive year that these studios have had a film contending for Best Picture. Focus Features’ ‘Conclave’, which garnered eight nominations, now shares the title of most nominated film in their history with ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and ‘Milk’. Remarkably, ‘Conclave’ was also one of the highest-grossing specialty films of 2024, transitioning successfully from the art house to the multiplex. To date, it has earned over $76 million worldwide.

Searchlight Pictures, earning ten nominations, significantly boosted Disney’s extensive movie empire to a total of fifteen nominations. Among these were eight for the film “A Complete Unknown” and two for “A Real Pain“. Additionally, Disney houses 20th Century Studios and National Geographic Films, which also received recognition.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about two outstanding films that have been making waves recently. One of them is “A Complete Unknown“, another strong contender for the Best Picture award, which has raked in an impressive $60 million since its Christmas Day release and continues to draw crowds.

On a different note, who can forget the phenomenal success of Pixar and Disney’s “Inside Out 2“? This masterpiece is not only competing for the Best Animated Feature award but also holds the record as the top-grossing animated film of all time with an astounding $1.7 billion in global box office sales!

Independent distributor Noen, known for its rule-bending approach, garnered seven nominations – six of them went to the Palme d’Or winner “Anora”. This surpassed Warner Bros.’ five nominations and Paramount’s three. Interestingly, all of Warner Bros.’ nominations were for “Dune: Part Two”, a best picture contender and global box-office powerhouse that earned $705 million worldwide.

Here is the Academy’s nominee count by individual distributor.

Netflix has 16 titles including “Emilia Pérez”, “Maria”, and “Wallace, Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl”.

On the other hand, A24 offers 14 movies such as “The Brutalist” and “Sing, Sing”.
