2025 Sundance Lineup: Latest Projects from Justin Lin, Questlove and Barry Levinson

As a cinephile with a keen eye for independent cinema, I am absolutely thrilled by this diverse and captivating lineup! The Festival has truly outdone itself this year, presenting a stunning array of stories that resonate deeply with the human experience.

The 2025 line-up for the Sundance Film Festival has been announced.

This year’s festival showcases the newest works by Oscar winners, studio filmmakers, and indie veterans such as Justin Lin, Ira Sachs, Barry Levinson, and Questlove. Meanwhile, the U.S. Dramatic Competition section is composed of entries from first-time participants at the Park City event.

Kim Yutani, head of programming at Sundance, expressed this to The Hollywood Reporter: The mix of fresh voices and some renowned filmmakers underscores the strength of independent cinema. It shows that regardless of where you stand in your career, there’s an irresistible allure to this community that Sundance has fostered over time. Notably, out of the 87 features revealed so far, 36 (or about 41%) are helmed by directors making their debut in feature films.

Among the stellar cast, performers such as Jennifer Lopez, Dev Patel, Bowen Yang, Chloë Sevigny, Olivia Colman, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Ayo Edebiri grace festival films. In addition, documentaries showcase stories about Sly and the Family Stone, Marlee Matlin, and Selena Quintanilla.

The U.S. Dramatic lineup features Rashad Frett’s movie “Ricky,” starring Stephan James and Sheryl Lee Ralph, which follows a man after prison time, along with “Atropia,” directed by Hailey Gates and produced by Luca Guadagnino, set within a military simulation facility. In the Premieres section, you’ll find Bill Condon’s adaptation of the musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” starring Lopez and Diego Luna, as well as “Peter Hujar’s Day,” reuniting Sachs with Ben Whishaw, plus Amy Berg’s latest documentary about the life and career of musician Jeff Buckley.

The titles of these films explore diverse themes such as transgender history and identity, for instance Zackary Drucker’s “April & Amanda” and Sam Feder’s “Heightened Scrutiny“. Some movies delve into the complexities of Israel-Palestine relations, with comedian Noam Shuster Eliassi’s one-woman show “Coexistence, My Ass“, falling under the World Documentary category, and Cherien Dabis’ “All That’s Left of You” being featured in the Premieres section.

Festival Director Eugene Hernandez notes that it’s no wonder the films we watch are delving into, addressing, and grappling with the most profound discussions happening within our culture and society today,” says he. Yutani further remarks, “A Sundance program mirrors the era we’re experiencing. Who else could present such topics to a broader public than these independent filmmakers?

This year’s festival arrives at a time when Sundance Institute is going through a period of change. Following last year’s event, an unexpected announcement was made that Joanna Vicente would be leaving her position as CEO after two years. Currently, Amanda Kelso serves as the Interim CEO. As stated by Kelso in today’s announcement, “The Festival represents our most prominent public program as an Institute and is a natural extension of the year-round artist support work we do as a nonprofit dedicated to making impactful storytelling widely available and sustainable.” Moreover, there remains uncertainty regarding the festival’s future location, as the organizers have yet to reveal where the festival will be held in 2027 and beyond, among the three potential cities: Cincinnati, Boulder, or Salt Lake City/Park City.

Regardless of these ongoing changes, Hernandez emphasizes that the essential function of Sundance within the vast entertainment industry – identifying and boosting emerging filmmakers and their projects – has consistently stayed the same: “For 41 years now, this is what Sundance does.” Yutani adds, “Wherever we may be, we are Sundance, due to the artists whose films we proudly present.

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival is scheduled from January 23rd to February 2nd, right here in Park City. Check out the complete schedule down below!
