Surf’s up for 20th Century Studios.
The Disney studio has acquired the rights for a crime thriller set in Hawaii, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson, and Emily Blunt as the main stars, with Martin Scorsese set to take on the director’s role.
A movie script, penned by journalist and author Nick Bilton, is reportedly in production. This film, currently unnamed, appears to follow the style of Martin Scorsese’s films like “Goodfellas” and “The Departed.” The story revolves around a mob boss competing for power over the Hawaiian islands during the 1960s and 1970s.

According to reports, a movie is being made based on a script written by journalist and author Nick Bilton. This fact-based film seems to be in the vein of Martin Scorsese’s works such as “Goodfellas” and “The Departed.” The plot centers around a mob boss fighting for dominance over the Hawaiian islands during the 1960s and 1970s.
Every player involved in the project will also serve as a producer: Scorsese is producing through Sikelia Productions, Johnson through Seven Bucks Productions, DiCaprio through Appian Way Productions, and Blunt via Ledbury Productions. Additionally, Bilton is a producer too.
The project was sparked by a close, family-like connection shared by Blunt and Johnson. It was Blunt who initially conceived the project and its cinematic vision. Now, Johnson is teaming up with Bilton to write a book about the same topic.
Titleless Tale recounts an impressive and captivating crime lord ascending to construct the isles’ dominant criminal conglomerate. Engaging in a ferocious battle against mainland corporations and competing gangs, he fiercely protects his ancestral territory. This relentless pursuit of unrivaled power sparks the final significant American mob chronicle, where the struggle for cultural preservation unfolds in an unexpected setting: paradise.
Dany Garcia (co-founder of Seven Bucks), Lisa Frechette from Sikelia Productions, and the duo Rick Yorn and Chris Donnelly from LBI Entertainment will serve as the project’s executive producers.
Earlier this year, Johnson and Garcia’s production company, Seven Bucks, struck a deal with Disney to produce movies for both cinematic release and streaming platforms. This is one of the initial projects that has emerged from their collaboration.
Approximately a month ago, the film package set in Hawaii made its debut in town and was one of the most high-profile offerings at this year’s auction. The fact that the project from the 20th Century studio was chosen, rather than competitors like Warner Bros. or streaming platforms, demonstrates the transformation the division is undergoing, led by David Greenbaum, President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios.
About a year ago, Greenbaum took control of the divisions with the aim to establish the 20th Century as a renowned platform for high-quality content and to collaborate with esteemed filmmakers. In the past year, under the leadership of president Steve Asbell, they have given the go-ahead for Ridley Scott’s new project titled “Dog Star” and Edward Berger and Austin Butler’s time travel venture called “The Barrier”. Moreover, they completed the production on the Bruce Springsteen biopic, “Deliver Me From Nowhere”, starring Jeremy Allen White.
