As a child of the early 2000s, I can’t help but feel a deep nostalgia for the groundbreaking show that was “24.” From the gripping storylines to the unforgettable characters, this series left an indelible mark on my formative years. The way it tackled real-world issues and reflected the zeitgeist of the time, all while keeping us on the edge of our seats, was truly remarkable.
Many folks often discuss “The Wire” and “Breaking Bad” as television’s finest series, and I concur with their sentiments. These shows truly stand out among others.
While not every television series needs to be the greatest of all time (GOAT), it’s perfectly fine for a show to be exceptionally good, and that should suffice. Such is the case with the popular series “24,” which was a massive hit in the early 2000s. The plot was straightforward but captivating. Over 8 seasons, Jack Bauer (portrayed by Kiefer Sutherland, who had a passion for the show) experienced what seemed like the longest day of his life…multiplied by 8 since there were 8 seasons…plus two special episodes in “24: Redemption” (a 2-hour storyline), and “24: Live Another Day.”
But, while the show may have had some low-lows (Did somebody say something about a cougar?), when it had its high-highs, there was nothing else like it. Here’s why.
Oh, and major spoilers up ahead.
Jack Bauer Is Still One Of The Greatest Heroes/Anti-Heroes Of All Time
Without a doubt, Kiefer Sutherland’s most memorable character, Jack Bauer, is often hailed as one of television’s all-time greats. He’s a hero for the ages, isn’t he? Time and again, he managed to save the day, but at a tremendous cost to his personal life. And let’s not forget, he never hesitated to deal with terrorists decisively.
To put it simply, even though it’s clear that Jack Bauer had good intentions, there were times when it seemed questionable whether he resorted to extreme methods to achieve his goals. This is because the TV show “24” was known for its controversial nature, as Jack Bauer frequently used torture to obtain information.
As a gamer immersed in the world of Jack Bauer, I frequently found myself squirming at the edge of my seat, questioning if the individuals he was mercilessly tormenting were indeed terrorists. Despite the CTU’s tendency to look away from his methods, Jack would relentlessly press down on open wounds or hold a knife to someone’s eye, threatening to blind them. It was a chilling reminder of the grey area between justice and brutality that often blurred in our line of duty.
Hey there, fellow gamer! Let’s dive into this game of life together. Here’s my take on your sentence:
Indeed, Jack Bauer was undeniably a figure of great valor, or perhaps even a devoted patriot – two terms that can subtly differ in meaning. However, the question of what price he paid for his heroics might reveal more about the observer than it does about Jack Bauer himself.
While It Had Its Missteps, 24 Was Often Peak TV When It Was At Its Best
Although it didn’t appear on our list of TV cliffhangers that infuriated us, let me share that the ending of Season 1 left me utterly bewildered when I first watched it. This was due to the fact that I had not anticipated Jack Bauer’s wife’s death in that scene.
Eagerly anticipating the developments in Season 2, I had to endure a long wait of a whole year. To my delight, quite a bit unfolded, with more events following suit throughout the series that spanned eight uneven seasons. However, the show truly shone during Seasons 2-5, with Season 5 earning an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series and a Golden Globe for Best TV Series – Drama.
Absolutely, I get what you’re saying. While Season 2 had a slight hiccup involving Kim and the cougar stalking storyline, overall, 24 was an exceptional series, particularly during its initial seasons.
Indeed, I’d label the golden era of 24 as the pinnacle of peak TV. Regrettably, much like several other series, 24 continued for a while beyond what seemed fitting, and some plotlines became quite implausible. However, had it not been for these errors, I truly believe that 24 would be considered among the greatest TV shows ever made. At its finest, it was simply outstanding.
The Supporting Characters Were Incredibly Memorable As Well
Everybody remembers Jack Bauer, but I think it’s impossible to think back to 24 and not reminisce over its incredible supporting characters as well. You of course had Dennis Haysbert, who played arguably the best Black president put to screen, but you also had one of the greatest Black villains in history with his wife, Sherry Palmer, played by Penny Johnson Jerald.
Additionally, you’ll recall some notable characters from CTU, like Tony Almeida, Bill Buchanan, Chloe O’Brien (Oh, Chloe!), and Edgar Stiles (My sympathies, Edgar!). To give you an idea, these are just a few of them.
However, each character was remarkably intriguing, as it became apparent which CTU colleagues were simply Jack’s peers, and those who truly counted as his friends. This distinction was particularly notable following the demise of his wife, suggesting that Bauer had grown cautious about revealing his emotions to others after such a loss.
The death or betrayal of a crucial character was particularly heart-wrenching, as it underscored how much Jack was affected each time. This illustrates the strong impact of an exceptional secondary character.
Some Of The Twists Are Still Mind-blowing, Even Today
To this day, I find it hard to accept that they wrote off Jack Bauer’s wife at the end of Season 1. Compared to the deaths of Ned Stark or Glenn Rhee on other shows, none have affected me as deeply as the demise of Teri Bauer did.
To be honest, I initially thought no character’s death affected me as deeply as David Palmer’s did, not even in any other show. However, upon reflection, I find that his demise had a profound impact on me, shaking me to my core.
I correct my previous statement, as there’s nothing more heartbreaking than witnessing Edgar’s tragic death from nerve gas poisoning, with his peers looking on helplessly.
As a dedicated gamer, let me share my perspective: While many claim that “Game of Thrones” had the most captivating plot twists, I’d argue that nothing compares to the rollercoaster ride that was “24”. Week after week, year after year, this show managed to keep me guessing – and often, on the edge of my seat! There simply wasn’t a more shocking series when “24” was at its peak. No other show came close.
Lastly, It Feels Like A True Time Capsule To An Era
In the end, the series feels like a genuine artifact from the early 2000s, given its debut in 2002 during the Bush Administration. The influence of that period, particularly the heightened awareness of terrorism following 9/11, is evident throughout.
As someone who has spent countless hours engrossed in various TV shows over the years, I must say that this particular series stands out as one of the most captivating and relevant ones I’ve ever encountered. The way it addressed current issues in real time was not only intriguing but also felt like a reflection of my own experiences living in this fast-paced world. It made me feel connected to the characters, making their struggles seem all too familiar and their victories all the more satisfying. In essence, this show managed to make me feel as if I were part of something bigger, a testament to its engaging and vital nature.
As a former intelligence officer who has grappled with the complexities of counter-terrorism, I found the show particularly captivating and thought-provoking. It delved into the morally grey area of whether torture can ever be justified, a question that has haunted me throughout my career. Moreover, it cast a shadow of doubt over the concept of patriotism, forcing us to confront its true meaning and implications.
“The series ’24’ seems to have been penned with incredible speed, and although it might appear somewhat outdated now, I believe there is no other show that embodies the spirit of the 2000s quite like ’24.’ It truly captures the essence of that era.”
As a long-time fan of quality television, I must say that “24” was a groundbreaking series for me. The fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat action and intense storylines kept me hooked from day one. In fact, I remember staying up late into the night to watch each episode as it aired live! So, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the show – did you also enjoy watching “24”?
