2XKO, the long-awaited Riot fighting game, will debut featuring just ten playable characters, leaving some fans less than thrilled by this choice.
Through Sajam’s live stream on Twitch, one of the developers for 2XKO announced that there will be only ten playable characters when the game launches later this year. This choice is made to ensure the game reaches players sooner rather than later, rather than delaying it while more champions are added.
It might appear to be a small amount, but believe me, we’ve taken notice. However, our priority is to release the game as quickly as possible so you can enjoy it, rather than waiting for an increased number of champions that could delay the launch.
To date, the champions confirmed for 2XKO include Ahri, Darius, Braum, Ekko, Yasuo, Illaoi, and Jinx. There are still three spots remaining, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the announcement. With such a large roster of characters in League of Legends, it’s inevitable that some players may feel disheartened if their favorite champion isn’t chosen.
To help you understand how limited the team is, consider this: When Street Fighter V was first released, it had only 16 characters and faced criticism for its small size. On the other hand, Dragon Ball FighterZ debuted with a playable roster of 24 characters. Even the release of Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, which wasn’t well-received, still featured 30 characters in its initial lineup.
In terms of character rosters, you’d have to look back at the era of arcade games to find ones as large as some modern ones. For instance, Street Fighter 2, released in 1991, initially featured eight playable characters, but this expanded to twelve with the Champion edition a year later. On the other hand, the first SNK fighting game, Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, which also debuted in 1991, only had three playable characters – Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi.
2XKO will launch with a relatively small cast of characters compared to other tag team fighters, and the gap is quite significant. While each character is unique and the core game mechanics are intricate and fun, if the release schedule doesn’t consistently introduce new characters in the early months, even the widely recognized League of Legends franchise might struggle to attract players.
Moreover, there’s growing discontent about the delayed release of 2XKO. Originally slated back in 2019,
Following that point, the game has transformed into something resembling this today: an intensely paced, cooperative, 2 versus 2 tag combat game, more accurately reflecting the spirit of the initial Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA).
While fighting games depend heavily on their content, a limited character roster might pose challenges for 2XKO’s success, as the initial buzz surrounding this new game centered around its unique concept – a fighting game featuring League of Legends characters.
Playing this game is an absolute pleasure! Folks from the U.S., Canada, and Brazil have another chance to experience it themselves when the second Alpha Test occurs on April 18th.
2XKO, a free-to-play game offering 10 starting characters, is slated for launch in 2025. Riot Games has yet to announce a precise date or timeline. If you’re considering 2XKO as your introduction to fighting games, I encourage you to conquer your fears and dive into this exciting genre!
