Note of Caution: This write-up might disclose some spoilers for the acclaimed horror series, “From,” produced by MGM. Over the course of its three seasons thus far, “From” has left viewers puzzled with a myriad of mysteries. This intricate puzzle box show revolves around a band of characters who find themselves trapped in an enigmatic town from which they cannot escape, as terrifying creatures emerge at night. The very essence of the town has been shrouded in mystery since the beginning, yet fresh enigmas have surfaced, such as Tabitha’s (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and Jade’s (David Alpay) reincarnation, along with Julie’s (Hannah Cheramy) capacity to traverse time.
The fourth season of “From” has already been confirmed, and it’s expected that the series will delve further into these narratives. The upcoming season will also address the mind-blowing finale of season 3 and where the town heads next. Since its debut in season 1 with the eerie town setting, “From” has excelled at hooking viewers with its enigma, gradually revealing the truth bit by bit. Although some fan theories have been validated as events unfolded, many others have turned out to be incorrect.
3. Tillie Was One Of The Monsters
Her Death Was Devastating
In the second season of “From,” we meet Tillie (Deborah Grover), a resident who often finds herself in town when the bus arrives. Right from the start, Tillie was a remarkably compassionate and soothing character, discussing Elgin’s (Nathan D. Simmons) fears and comforting pregnant Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori). Her kindness, however, raised suspicions among some viewers, leading to one of the most popular theories in “From” season 3.
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself intrigued by the speculations surrounding Tillie’s character. The prevailing notion was that she was either one of those mysterious creatures from the town, or at the very least, keeping tabs on the locals on behalf of them. It seemed too good to be true that such a kind and composed individual as Tillie could just happen upon this town by chance.
Moreover, her presence during significant events involving Fatima, her baby, and Elgin’s dreams about the kimono woman added fuel to these suspicions. This theory aligns with Randall’s (A.J. Simmons) previous hypothesis that certain inhabitants may have been strategically placed in the town for surveillance purposes.
In my humble opinion as a movie reviewer, the rumors swirling around Tillie’s monstrous nature are debunked in season 3 when, overwhelmed by her own turmoil, Fatima strikes Tillie with gardening shears. The heart-wrenching reality of Tillie’s demise serves as a stark reminder of the darkness that pervades the town of From. Despite the intrigue that would have been generated by the ‘monster’ theory, witnessing Tillie succumb to the same fate as the town’s other victims is undeniably more poignant.
2. The Numbers On The Bottle Tree Are Addresses
Fans Theorized The Numbers Helped Travelers Arrive Safely At Their Destination
An alternate interpretation of a misconceived theory revolved around the ‘Bottle Tree’ and its significance within the series. The tree made several appearances, yet characters failed to decipher the purpose behind the bottles containing numbers. The mystery intensified further when Tabitha discovers from Henry (Robert Joy) that his wife had constructed an identical art installation in their town of Camden, Maine.
Although the specific link between the two locations remains unexplored, the enigma surrounding the numbers has been unraveled. In the third season of ‘From’, a theory proposed that these numbers might be types of addresses enabling select characters to traverse the distant trees without peril. This theory also highlighted instances where individuals like Boyd (Harold Perrineau) and Tabitha carried numbers or addresses, safely passing through the tree and reaching their destination, contrasting with Dale (Cliff Saunders), who lacked such a number and unfortunately met his end.
The theory was impressive as it might have shed light on the town’s location and the means of traversing through trees to various spots, but the true function of the numbers turns out to be intricately complex. In the third season’s tenth episode, we discover that these bottle tree numbers are actually musical notes. Remarkably, when Jade and Tabitha deciphered their true significance and played the melody, they were able to recall their previous lives, thereby resolving one enigma and enhancing another.
1. The Kimono Woman Is Trying To Help Elgin
The Spectral Figure Had Far More Sinister Motives
In the third season, one of the most bizarre additions Elgin encounters in the town is a ghost dressed in a kimono who frequently appears. These visits are always unsettling, as it initially seems she intends to harm Elgin. However, things become more ominous when she seemingly offers aid and he accepts without question. Considering the malevolent nature of most supernatural entities in the town, it would have been a significant relief for the characters if her guidance had proven beneficial, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
In the belief that she could lead us to a potent charm or weapon against the town’s monstrous creatures, I found myself drawn to her. Yet, little did we know, she was one of the monsters herself. Reminiscent of how Sarah (Avrey Konrad) whispered instructions for bloodshed in my ears, this kimono-clad woman subtly manipulated me. At first, her suggestions seemed harmless, but it wasn’t long before I found myself abducting Fatima and imprisoning her in a concealed chamber beneath the cellar, compelling her to give birth there against her will.
It appears that Elgin thinks he’s genuinely aiding Fatima and the townsfolk, but the woman in the kimono merely intends to take Fatima’s child as a means to resurrect the monster that Boyd had earlier slain. The kimono woman, along with other monstrous entities, takes Fatima’s baby, which then transforms into the smiley creature, showing that, similar to the voices Sara perceives, the woman in the kimono is simply another terrifying obstacle devised by “From” for the characters to conquer.
