As a huge fan of Parks and Recreation, I can’t help but feel a deep connection to the quirky and lovable character of Andy Dwyer. Having grown up in a small town myself, I can relate to his laid-back attitude and unique sense of humor.
Parks and Recreation is easily one of the best sitcoms of all time, especially given all the hilarious characters each of its main cast remain known for today. This time around we’re giving flowers to Chris Pratt’s role as the lovable Andy Dwyer throughout the run of the NBC comedy. While Pratt at the time had not yet become the movie star known for Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World and voiceover roles in LEGO, Super Mario Bros. and Garfield movies, he sure proved he had hilarious comedic timing over the years with the character. Here are a ton of moments that showed off his A+ ability to make us (and surely the cast) laugh hard.
“Leslie, I typed your symptoms into the thing up here, and it says you could have network connectivity problems.”
In the second season of “Parks and Recreation,” during the episode titled “Flu Season,” the office is hit hard by a massive flu outbreak, even affecting Leslie Knope, the show’s determined character. Filling in for April during this episode, Andy delivers the following humorous line when he discovers her computer’s wifi isn’t working. This spontaneous remark, which Pratt came up with on set, has been hailed by the series creator as the “most hilarious line” ever spoken on the show.
“By day, Andy Dwyer: shoe-shinist. By different time of day, Andy Radical: possum-tackler. And by night…do whatever I want. No job.”
As a passionate gamer and an avid fan of “Parks and Recreation,” I can’t help but share my excitement about Season 2’s episode “The Possum” and Andy Dwyer’s unforgettable moment. In this storyline, I joined Leslie Knope on her mission to capture the elusive infamous possum residing on a golf course in Pawnee.
“What’s 5,000 times better than ‘A Candle in the Wind?’ This song is called ‘5,000 Candles in the Wind.’”
The “Li’l Sebastian” episode, where Andy Dwyer and his band Mouse Rat paid tribute through song after the mini horse passed away, remains unforgettable. When penning the title for this emotional composition, Andy drew inspiration from Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind.” However, he extended the metaphor to include an abundance of candles, making it a unique and heartfelt tribute. Mouse Rat is certainly one of those fictional bands that leaves us longing to experience their live performances.
“No blood orphans. I don’t know what that is.”
One noteworthy aspect of Chris Pratt’s character Andy Dwyer in “Parks and Recreation” is his intriguing dynamic with Aubrey Plaza’s April Ludgate. Their contrasting energies create a captivating connection between them, most notably showcased in the Season 4 episode “Meet ‘N’ Greet.” During this episode, Andy and April discuss their upcoming Halloween party with the camera. While April focuses on the morbid and spooky elements, Andy balances these out with cheerful and wholesome aspects. However, he draws the line at blood orphans. This scene has gained popularity among fans as it contrasts Halloween Horror Nights with Disney’s more lighthearted spooky season celebrations.
“I’m not crying, okay? I’m just allergic to jerks!”
One noteworthy episode from the second season of “Parks and Recreation” is titled “Greg Pikitis.” During this episode, Andy assists Leslie in dealing with a mischievous child who damages the park each Halloween. Leslie asserts that Andy has effectively confronted the boy after a lengthy interrogation in the conference room. Upon opening the door, Leslie discovers Andy shedding tears. In Season 5 episode “How a Bill Becomes a Law,” Andy joins Ron on a mission to mend a pothole for a local Pawnee resident. While Ron focuses on the task at hand, Andy is diverted by the homeowner’s two young girls who ask him to join their princess playtime. When Ron requires assistance, Andy can only be reached as “Princess Rainbow Sparkle.” Unbeknownst to him, this scene served as preparation for his future role as a loving father to daughters.
“April, you’re like an angel with no wings.”
During the early stages of my relationship with Andy, both of us being employees at Pawnee’s city hall, found ourselves spending an increasing amount of time together. In “Woman of the Year,” a pivotal scene from Season 2, April went above and beyond by offering to help me find a new place to live after I moved into the pit. Gratitude was my response: “So, I’m like a person who needs a home?” To which she playfully corrected, “Yes, Andy, exactly that.”
“Just remember, every time you look up at the moon, I too will be looking at the moon. Not the same moon, obviously. That’s impossible.”
During the initial stage of Andy and April’s romance, they started spending an increasing amount of time together at Pawnee’s city hall. In one episode from Season 2 titled “Woman of the Year,” April offered her assistance to help Andy find a new place to live after he moved into the pit. Gratifying her effort, Andy made a comment which April then corrected, saying:
“Did you know that the food you eat becomes energy? Boom! That’s spaghetti. Nachos. That’s a cookie.”
In the “Soulmates” episode of Season 3, Ron and Chris engage in a burger-making competition. While Chris works on his creations, Andy helps him out and casually mentions that food is just a source of energy. As he makes this statement, Andy animatedly punches and kicks the air. This display leaves Ron and April with unimpressed expressions.
“Burt Macklin, FBI. Thought I was dead? So did the president…’s enemies.”
In the popular TV show “Parks and Recreation,” Chris Pratt’s character Andy Dwyer frequently assumes a different persona, named Burt Macklin, by donning sunglasses and acting like an FBI agent. In Season 4’s episode “Born and Raised,” Andy resumes this role to provide security for Leslie. Pratt skillfully delivers humorous lines while wearing sunglasses, introducing Macklin once more with this amusing line.
“I didn’t actually sell my last car. I just forgot where I parked it.”

During Season 4 of Parks and Recreation, the department assists a high school Model United Nations group in “The Treaty” episode. This occurs after Leslie’s unsuccessful city council campaign and her break-up with Ben. Their friendship also fails to work out. In the midst of this event, Andy becomes engaged and exchanges several lion-representing countries for an excessive number of lions.
“Where’s all the faces of the presidents?”
“Aw, babe…you had a crush on me? That’s embarrassing.”
In “Pie-Mary,” the last season’s episode of “Parks and Recreation,” Ron and April participate in a scavenger hunt. One hint reveals that Donna once told April about the time they saw “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” together, shortly after April had her wisdom teeth extracted. During this tale, Donna mentioned that April had a strong affection for Andy at the moment. Andy, who was there, attempted to make Donna uncomfortable. Her response was simple: “We’re married.”
“There’s an old saying in show business: ‘The show must go wrong.’”
In the Season 2 finale “Freddy Spaghetti,” the Parks and Rec team is in trouble when their scheduled children’s concert entertainer cancels last minute. They turn to Andy for help, but unfortunately, he gets into an accident on his motorcycle while going home to get his guitar. Despite his injury, Andy makes a poignant statement that moves Leslie to her core, causing her to appeal to the audience for assistance by looking directly into the camera.
“You’re the greatest wife ever. I wish I could marry you all over again. Let’s get divorced!”
Andi and April make an unpredictable and endearing pair when they’re together. In the sixth season episode titled “Moving Up,” Andy jokingly proposes that they should divorce and remarry for comedic effect. This amusing suggestion is made during a scene where he unexpectedly announces their supposed separation to a crowded bar.
“All my favorites foods have butter on them. Pancakes, toast, popcorn, grapes… (Gasps) Butter is my favorite food.”
In “Article 2” of Season 5, Leslie Knope works to eliminate outdated laws from their town charter. To accomplish this, she enters into an unusual pact with a local resident, brilliantly portrayed by Patton Oswalt in a guest role on “Parks and Recreation.” As part of the deal, they live off the grid at the Pawnee Historical House. Throughout the episode, they create butter using traditional methods, leading to a side-splitting moment when Andy discovers something amusing.
“I was reading an encyclopedia and I tripped or ‘fell over’ and hit my head… or brain helmet.”
In the “Campaign Ad” episode of Season 4, Andy Dwyer goes to the hospital due to a head injury caused by a forceful sneeze. While conversing with the doctor, he attempts to feign intelligence and conceal the true reason for his visit. However, I’m doubtful that a “brain helmet” is an actual medical device.
“You’re what keeps me going. You’re my Verizon-Chipotle-Exxon.”
In the seventh season of “Parks and Recreation,” Andy hosts a children’s TV show named “Johnny Karate.” However, he intends to conclude it as he and April prepare to relocate to Washington D.C. While filming an episode, April becomes distraught over the show’s termination and runs away. Andy pursues her, consoling her that what truly matters is their relationship. This scene features a charming dialogue and pays homage to one of the series’ clever inside jokes: the Verizon-Chipotle-Exxon merger.
“Leslie, I tried to make ramen in the coffee pot and I broke everything.”
During Season 4, I was rooting for Leslie Knope as she pursued her City Council campaign, all while keeping her romance with Ben Wyatt under wraps. When they finally went public with their relationship, her campaign team abandoned her, but the department stepped in to support her instead. In a particular scene, when my beloved bosses dropped by for a visit, I assured them that I had an exceptional team working on my campaign. Just then, Andy burst in and announced the shocking news, making the moment even more unforgettable.
“Wow, sounds like you’re going through some tough stuff right now. Too bad there’s not doctors for your mind.”
In Season 5, Rob Lowe’s character Chris Traeger was dealing with the aftermath of his split from Jerry’s daughter in a very literal sense, as he had often emphasized. Despite this, he made a commitment to assist Andy in preparing for his police physical examination during the episode “Soda Tax.” Towards the end, Chris pondered deep thoughts, while Andy came to the realization that a psychologist could benefit him – unbeknownst to him at the time.
“Gases fill the volume of whatever container they are in. School.”
Leslie Knope frequently plans delightful surprises for her friends, with Ann Perkins being a favorite recipient. In the third season’s “The Bubble” episode, Leslie, Andy, and April orchestrated an astonishing surprise for Ann: a room filled with balloons. April playfully warned that she might perish if she burst her own balloon, which she claimed was filled with poison. Meanwhile, Andy added to the humor by jokingly stating that they would all meet their end due to a school fact he had learned.
“I can’t believe we’re at Hogwarts!”
I’ve often been struck by how it seems that Andy grew up watching TV more than anything else. And in Season 6, during our trip to London for an award ceremony with Leslie, Ben, and April, Andy’s unique perspective became even clearer. As we approached Buckingham Palace, he excitedly exclaimed that it looked just like Hogwarts from Harry Potter. It was a lighthearted moment that had everyone in stitches, especially when Ben tried to explain that Harry Potter is merely a work of fiction.
“Can we just real quick stop at a place that has free pants?”
Instead of Tom, Andy is quite casual. When they receive an invitation to a swanky Washington D.C. gala in the Season 5 opener, Andy brings on the laughter by asking if there’s a place en route where they can find “complimentary trousers.”
“You get fired, I’ll quit, we’ll leave together. I’m serious – move to a new city, change our names, burn our fingertips off with acid, swap faces… if we have to.”
When my favorite character, Andy, found out his wife April made a mistake at work in “Win, Lose, or Draw” during Season 4, I tried to comfort her as she expressed her fears about getting fired. To ease her anxiety, I suggested we come up with an elaborate plan – if she were let go, we’d engage in a series of intense activities, making it look like we were covering up something major, just like in a thriller movie.
“I owe Leslie everything I have… which after tonight will be 39 bucks.”
During the initial stages of “Parks and Recreation,” Andy unwittingly joins the Parks and Recreation team due to mere presence. A pivotal Season 2 episode, titled “Greg Pikitis,” solidified his role in the series. In this episode, Andy assists Leslie in apprehending a vandalizing child on Halloween. At one point, he mentions being compensated for his efforts, which would mean the world to him – once he actually receives payment.
“I’m going to be here when you wake up. I will not leave your side… You could be asleep for hours, maybe I’ll come back later.”
I was deeply touched by the “Flu Season” episode in Season 3, where April falls ill and is hospitalized. When I visited her, I bravely pledged to stay by her side until she regained consciousness. However, my resolve crumbled almost instantly, and I found myself leaving against my initial intentions. Looking back, those moments between April and me in the early stages of their relationship were truly heartwarming.
“Oh yeah, shock wire. I call it that because if you take a shower and you touch the wire, you die!”
In the hit TV show “Parks and Recreation,” it’s well-known that once Andy and April are a couple, their living space becomes chaotic and untidy. Do you recall the scene where they dined on frisbees? In an amusing turn of events during Season 4’s “Meet N’ Greet,” Ron, taken aback by Andy’s fervor over a supposed electrical safety device called “shock wire,” feels compelled to step in and tidy up their entire house.
“As your Prom King, I am your ruler. Silence!”
In the “Prom” episode of Season 6 in Parks and Recreation, April initially dislikes the idea of attending the high school event with the department. However, she unexpectedly turns it into a romantic evening with Andy instead. To make things more interesting, she manipulates the votes to crown Andy as the Prom King. This results in a humorous scene where Andy considers himself the true “ruler” of the prom due to his title. He then surprrenders the queen’s crown to April as his first official decree as her king for the night.
“Ahahaha. Sweater swap!”
In the second season’s “Summer Catalog” episode, there’s a sweet moment between April and Andy that makes Leslie do a double take. They’ve unexpectedly swapped sweaters, and Andy looks proud of their harmless trick.
“You’re never gonna need that computer again… because I’m home for like 19 hours.”
Andy consistently creates chaos and struggles with remembering the basics, which never fails to amuse. In “Filibuster,” the sixth season episode, Andy unexpectedly appears at April’s office while they are in a long-distance relationship. The humor lies in his comment that she won’t need her computer for video chats anymore, despite his brief stay. Needless to say, she still will.
Few shows can match the excellence of “Parks and Recreation.” Each actor delivers an outstanding performance, making it a joy to revisit Andy Dwyer’s numerous memorable moments from the show.
