As a longtime aficionado of cringe-worthy television, I find myself utterly captivated by this diverse collection of shows that have mastered the art of making viewers squirm in their seats. Each series, with its unique style and humor, has left an indelible mark on my psyche, much like a bad haircut or an unfortunate choice in footwear.

Despite our various individual differences, there’s a shared experience that binds us: the discomfort we feel during embarrassing situations, even if they’re not real. Sometimes, we find ourselves oddly drawn to such awkward moments, and certain TV shows have mastered this art of cringe-worthy scenes so effectively that they become unforgettable. In fact, many of these series are renowned for their awkwardness and ranked among the top 100 Sitcoms.

Despite all the awkward moments I’ve experienced personally, finding solace is simple when I witness even more mortifying situations unfold on fictional characters and comedians in highly cringe-worthy shows, ranging from old TV programs to modern ones. This ride through past embarrassments might be best enjoyed with a hand partially shielding your eyes.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

It is quite plausible that the group from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” could be considered uncontested masters of actions that would leave even the most unsavory individuals embarrassed, as they consistently display behavior marked by an absence of shame and empathy. The supporting cast also struggles to set a better example. An enduringly memorable moment is when Frank emerges from a couch naked, which will forever linger in our minds.

Extras

Ricky Gervais’ HBO/BBC series Extras, where he masterfully transformed cringe comedy into a profitable artform, truly shines for several reasons. Firstly, Ricky’s character Andy is a walking disaster magnet. Secondly, his agent Darren Lamb, with his perpetual grin, delivers biting honesty. Last but not least, each episode features a celebrity guest appearance that often ends in spectacular self-destruction. Notable examples include Kate Winslet, Daniel Radcliffe, David Bowie, and many others.

Beavis And Butt-Head

As a gamer, I’ve got to say that the Beavis & Butt-Head of their MTV days really resonated with the angst of my teenage years and a dash of chaos. However, in this new era on Paramount+ and Comedy Central, it’s all about the laughs and the cringe. Their mind-boggling idiocy has them stumbling into bathrooms thinking they’re escape rooms, and trying to cultivate tobacco from cigarette butts – you just can’t help but chuckle!

Between Two Ferns

Scott Aukerman and B.J. Porter, known for their zany comedy work, developed the unconventional talk show “Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis“, leveraging the surge in Zach’s stand-up comedy fame from the Hangover trilogy. Notable celebrities like Michael Cera, Jon Hamm, and Charlize Theron found themselves in an unscripted interview situation with Galifianakis, where humorously awkward interactions were the norm rather than harmony.

Married…With Children

The Bundy family, from the TV show “Married…with Children,” is similar to a place that’s enjoyable to visit briefly, yet not ideal for long-term residency. Over 11 seasons, this dysfunctional quartet – Al, Peg, Kelly, and Bud – consistently evoked a mix of discomfort and amusement, as they were the most uncomfortable characters in any given scene, whether alone or together. Despite their offensive behavior, lack of self-awareness, and inherent grossness, we found ourselves cheering for them nonetheless.

Nathan For You

Nathan for You is an exceptional mix of documentary-style series and improvisation, offering a unique take on awkward humor that isn’t solely dependent on character embarrassment. The show features a fictionalized portrayal of Nathan Fielder, who endeavors to assist genuine small businesses with his outlandish, puzzling, and intricate strategies – strategies often reflecting his personal anxieties and quirks (such as the infamous Dumb Starbucks). Witnessing the confusion on people’s faces as they grapple with Nathan’s unconventional ideas and recommendations is both amusing and fascinating.

Da Ali G Show

Sasha Baron Cohen rose to global fame through the creation of “Da Ali G Show,” a program that introduced the character of Ali G, dubbed as “the voice of youth.” Two other characters from this show were popular enough for spin-offs: Borat, the Kazakhstan native, and Brüno, a gay Austrian fashion designer. Cohen’s bold comedy often leaves viewers uncomfortable, but he is most recognized for his awkward interviews with celebrities and politicians who are utterly unaware of the situation.

The Larry Sanders Show

Abstain from clicking! Partially inspired by Garry Shandling’s guest-hosting roles on The Tonight Show, The Larry Sanders Show stands out as elite comedy. A significant portion of its humor derives from the downfall of characters Larry and his overly optimistic sidekick Hank Kingsley. Although not quite as excruciatingly awkward as other timeless classics, there are still plenty of regrettable actions and explosive situations that make viewers experience a mild form of second-hand embarrassment.

Fawlty Towers

If the Mount Rushmore of TV Cringe existed, John Cleese’s Basil Fawlty would be hastily carved up there, given how staggeringly awkward things get at the titular hotel. Basil’s stubborn pride, sporadic laziness, and standoffish nature makes him socially combative with wife Sybil (Prunella Scales), Spanish waiter Manuel (the late, great Andrew Sachs), and guests both fancy and commonplace. Only 12 episodes exist, and “The Germans” and “The Kipper and the Corpse” are stomach-churning standouts.

The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret

The darkly humorous IFC comedy “The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret,” penned by David Cross, deserves a timeless award for its fitting title. Each episode is a thrilling test of audience endurance as temp worker Todd transforms into chaos personified with each action and utterance, triggering increasingly intense repercussions. Across all seasons, Cross’ knack for making viewers feel like they’re on the verge of implosion due to discomfort remains remarkably consistent, with a deliberate narrative twist introduced in the third.

Hello Ladies

In a new venture apart from ‘The Office’ and ‘Extras’, Stephen Merchant, the actor known for these shows, took the lead in ‘Hello Ladies’, a series set in Los Angeles. His character, Stuart Pritchard, is a man who consistently attracts misfortune in his romantic life, yet manages to keep smiling and moving forward towards the next romantic mishap. Joined by co-stars Kevin Weisman and Kyle Mooney, Merchant delivers a hilarious portrayal of this complex character.

I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson

Instead of the typical cringe comedy that sticks to conventional sitcom lengths, I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson strives to make viewers feel intensely awkward and hilarious in a short amount of time. Each episode is approximately 15 minutes long, yet manages to pack a full week’s worth of social unease, ranging from office workers pretending to have eaten hot dogs during meetings to drivers interpreting joke bumper stickers literally to beauty pageants for “Little Buff Boys.

The Tom Green Show

Innovator in independent television comedy, Tom Green gained popularity by performing daring stunts and shock humor, often pushing boundaries with his antics that ranged from causing discomfort for his own family to nursing on cow udders and testing the limits of strangers’ patience with his quirky behavior. His unconventional style paved the way for numerous comedy shows, although few managed to replicate the raw, uncomfortable charm that characterized Green’s performances.

Worst Week

In the TV show “Worst Week,” which is modeled after a UK sitcom, Kyle Bornheimer and Erinn Hayes played Sam, a chaotic character, and Mel, his pregnant fiancee who were attempting to surprise their family with wedding and baby news, but everything that could go wrong, did. (Kurtwood Smith from “That ‘70s Show” portrayed Mel’s exasperated father.) The series was filled with incidents such as exploding vehicles, lost family treasures, misplaced Christmas gifts, dirty diapers, and many more mishaps.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Aline Brosh McKenna and Rachel Bloom’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” stands out as a unique musical comedy series. It revolves around a lawyer with questionable behavior who relocates unexpectedly for an old crush. This show fearlessly tackles topics like mental health, feminism, and various types of relationships. With its raw honesty, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” is arguably The CW’s most intelligent series, leaving viewers both heartbroken and entertained by Rebecca’s life decisions and top-notch musical daydreams.

The Inbetweeners

The Inbetweeners is a spot-on portrayal of the adolescent years beyond puberty, magnifying the cringe-worthy awkwardness that often ensues. Characters Will, Simon, Jay, and Neil navigate their quest for social status and romantic success, but their attempts usually end in embarrassment instead. It’s hard not to feel embarrassed by episodes such as “Caravan Club” and “The Fashion Show,” along with the terror-filled scenes from the spinoff movie involving a waterslide.

Family Guy

One of the most enduring animated shows ever made, “Family Guy,” consistently adheres to its key principles: spontaneous jokes and characters who often act without moral constraint. Unlike many other series which can feel overly cringeworthy, the peculiar humor derived from Quagmire and Herbert is in a league of its own – likely originating on Uranus – while Meg-related discomfort pales in comparison, yet they still manage to intersect. This reminds me of that time I followed those two doves, leading to a scene set in a noir-style bird sanctuary.

The Mick

Kaitlin Olson stars in what’s widely considered the raunchiest and most cringe-worthy comedy on TV – “It’s Always Sunny.” In “The Mick,” her characters Mickey and Jimmy (Scott MacArthur) make terrible guardians for the Pemberton siblings. Each episode showcases their self-centered behavior, leading to distressing situations that involve physical injuries and emotional regression. If you find Thomas Barbusca’s Chip emitting shrill screams like a woman, beware!

Ziwe

Ziwe Fumudoh, known as the queen of satire, struck gold with her series “Baited with Ziwe“, but truly went platinum with Showtime’s “Ziwe“. Her interviews, reminiscent of the best on the Daily Show, guide guests along self-revealing paths, pushing them to test their comfort zones, assuming they have one. Even well-known figures like Phoebe Bridgers, Fran Lebowitz, and Michael Che find themselves in awkward, cringe-worthy situations when asked probing questions that make them momentarily speechless. (Chet Hanks seems to be an exception with seemingly boundless limits.)

Freaks And Geeks

Without a doubt, the TV series “Freaks and Geeks” is more about openhearted humor than awkwardness that makes you cringe, although it’s hard to find someone who wouldn’t recognize the relatable awkwardness in the experiences of John Francis Daley’s character Sam, Martin Starr’s character Bill, and Samm Levine’s character Neal throughout the show’s memorable single season. While not everyone may have worn a Parisian night suit to school or accidentally soiled themselves, or had crushes referred to as siblings, we can all relate to that overwhelming sense of “bury me deep” embarrassment.

The Office (UK)

In an appearance that might prompt a cautious reaction from any mother, Ricky Gervais’ character David Brent turned the workplace of Wernham Hogg into an awkwardly unpleasant universe. There was never a moment when David Brent wasn’t a source of cringe-worthy moments, whether it was his awkward and seemingly endless dancing, his failed attempts at flirting, or his infamous music video for “If You Don’t Know Me By Now.” Yet, Tim and Dawn…

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Larry David transformed the looping narrative structure of “Seinfeld” and infused it with a heavy dose of uncomfortable, audience-startling awkwardness, based on his own life experiences. Regardless of how predictable the journey from Larry’s clumsy antics to impending disaster may seem, it consistently works, leaving me feeling as if I need to intervene and apologize for any harm Larry has caused – whether to a person, an animal, or even a child.

The Eric Andre Show

A key aspect of The Eric Andre Show lies in its unpredictability, but one thing is for sure: you’ll likely encounter some incredibly awkward scenes starring host Eric André, which might just top your daily list of cringe-worthy moments. This show sets a very high standard for uncomfortable talk shows, and trust me, you don’t want to know what it’s coated with!

The Curse

In a unique blend of gripping drama and awkward comedy, the hour-long series titled “The Curse” starring Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone delivers exceptionally well. The characters Asher and Whitney make questionable decisions in their pursuit of an HGTV show, which is based on a doubtful and potentially harmful concept. To add to the tension, co-creator Benny Safdie’s unpredictable creative influence and his role as the in-show director create situations so intense that viewers may find themselves needing to take breaks just to catch their breath.

The Life And Times Of Tim

As a gamer, I can say that HBO is my go-to place for top-notch uneasiness, and Steve Dildarian’s animated comedy, “The Life and Times of Tim,” certainly lives up to that reputation. There’s even a sprinkle of Nick Kroll to make things even more intriguing. Each episode promises to take unexpected twists into mind-boggling scenarios, usually sparked by the main character’s peculiar decisions.

The Comeback

After the success of “Friends”, Lisa Kudrow starred in “The Comeback”, a show that satirizes Hollywood and is filled with awkward moments. The series follows Valerie Cherish, an actress, as she attempts to revive her career across two seasons separated by two years. Because of the reality TV aspect, Kudrow gives a multifaceted performance that seldom shows her true self, while other aspects of her character are unsettlingly inappropriate.

Peep Show

David Mitchell and Robert Webb, renowned comedians from the UK, created a masterpiece with “Peep Show,” where the unique first-person perspective visual style immerses viewers right into the action, making them feel like they’re seated front row for Mark and Jeremy’s antics in their flat, the awkward Christmas dinner, the special day’s wedding, and more intimate moments such as the escapades in Dobby’s closet.

South Park

South Park’s characters remain a popular mainstay in entertainment, and their creators continue to excel at serving up biting satire with an uncomfortable level of accuracy. It seems that there are fewer subjects left untouched by the series’ sharp wit than those it hasn’t tackled awkwardly.

Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job

Representatives of Adult Swim, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, create a unique, often cringeworthy segment of television. The monumental show “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job” provokes viewers right from its title punctuation, and this unusual charm or irritation intensifies throughout the series.

The Rehearsal

Nathan Fielder, known for his cringe-worthy humor, seamlessly blends actual life scenarios with ingenious production design for HBO’s show, The Rehearsal. In this unique series, individuals rehearse challenging conversations from their real lives in meticulously created environments that mimic their homes and everyday locations, such as a Raising Cane’s restaurant. The intriguing blend of reality and the absurd leaves me feeling uneasy just contemplating being part of an episode.

The Office (U.S.)

In a remarkable turn of events, Greg Daniels’ adaptation of the UK series “The Office” into an American sitcom, starring Steve Carell as Michael Scott, is widely considered one of the most successful UK-to-U.S. remakes. The show skillfully transferred Ricky Gervais’ character David Brent’s endearing yet awkward persona onto Carell’s Michael Scott, giving birth to a cringe-worthy comedy phenomenon. Despite its eventual overstaying its welcome, the mockumentary format will always be cherished for episodes like “The Dundies,” “Safety Training,” and “Stress Relief,” which left viewers gasping with discomfort. While Jim and Pam are universally loved, nothing can outshine Michael’s knack for being uncomfortable to watch.

Louie

The critically acclaimed series “Louie,” which won an Emmy, might always be overshadowed by the real-life scandals involving its creator Louis C.K., yet this doesn’t diminish its ability to present some of the most awkward moments on television over its five seasons. The protagonist’s embarrassing character makes him struggle with women, falter in his professional life, and even stumble as a father. Moreover, “Louie” is significant for its self-reflexive episode that tackled the legitimate claims of joke theft against Dane Cook, which were leveled against C.K. himself.
