As someone who has spent countless hours behind the wheel and even more in front of the television screen, I must say that these films have left an indelible mark on my racing-loving heart!
There’s nothing more thrilling than witnessing the best racers push their high-speed vehicles to the brink. Whether it’s movie scenes of auto racing or any type of competition, they never fail to get your adrenaline pumping. Be it street races or circuits, they’ll surely take your breath away. These films are exactly what you crave when you’ve got an insatiable hunger for speed.
Days Of Thunder
Following the sensational triumph of Top Gun, Tom Cruise and director Tony Scott joined forces once more, swapping fighter jets for stock cars in the pulse-pounding film Days of Thunder. This production showcased some of the most exhilarating auto racing scenes ever depicted on screen up until that moment, and it proved to be yet another box office sensation for the Cruise/Scott partnership. Notably, Cruise also shared the screen with his future spouse Nicole Kidman in this movie.
Rush
The film “Rush” is inspired by the real-life struggle for the 1976 Formula 1 championship between James Hunt, a charismatic English playboy, and Niki Lauda, a serious Austrian. This movie is thrilling not only on the race track but also off it, as their competition was fierce and intense. Despite a devastating crash Lauda experienced during the season that brought them closer together, neither driver slowed down in their pursuit of the final victory flag, competing fiercely against each other.
Cannonball Run
In this race, there are no set paths or regulations – it’s called the Cannonball Run. Teams hop into their specially designed vehicles for a transcontinental speed challenge that will be remembered forever. The movie boasts an outrageous ensemble of actors like Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Jamie Farr, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Jackie Chan, and many others. Just watching this star-studded cast is entertaining enough.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
A lot of folks often claim that “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” stands as the ultimate racing film ever made. It’s tough to dispute this claim. What makes it even more appealing is its side-splitting humor, and let’s not forget the thrilling racing sequences it offers. So here’s to Shake AND bake!
Speed Racer
If you spent your childhood in the ’80s, there’s a high chance you were quite fond of the series Speed Racer. Although the film may not evoke the same sense of nostalgia, it remains surprisingly true to the original, boasting some truly mind-bending race sequences, much like the animated show.
Greased Lightning
Greased Lightning isn’t the standout film on the list, but it’s not a poorly made one either. It’s somewhat under-the-radar, which is unfortunate considering its semi-true tale of Wendell Scott, the first African American NASCAR driver. Portrayed by Richard Pryor, whenever he’s in a movie, it’s always worth watching.
Lucky Logan
In essence, although Logan Lucky primarily revolves around a heist at a NASCAR track, rather than focusing on the sport itself, it’s still an entertaining film worth mentioning. The plot unfolds during the Coca-Cola 500 race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, so technically speaking, it qualifies for inclusion.
Need for Speed
Movies based on video games often offer a varied experience, with some succeeding while many fall short. Without a doubt, Need for Speed belongs to the latter group. Despite this, the racing sequences are certain to get your heart pumping. It may not be your initial pick, but if you’re a fan of high-speed vehicles, it caters specifically to that interest.
Grand Prix (1966)
1966’s “Grand Prix” is a movie that will captivate any genuine racing enthusiast. Originally filmed in 70mm, it left audiences spellbound by its thrilling race sequences. While the story revolves around one Formula 1 season, it’s essentially a showcase of the stunning racing scenes, which are still impressive to this day.
Ferrari
Michael Mann has a knack for designing cars that are visually striking. Despite the fact that the 2023 Ferrari film underperformed at the box office, enthusiasts of racing or Ferraris should still consider watching it. While the movie isn’t flawless, every scene featuring a car is exceptional, without exception.
Driven
Back in 2000, I found myself immersed in the high-octane world of CART racing, courtesy of director Reny Harlin and action legend Sylvester Stallone, in a film they collaboratively created called “Driven.” This movie was a thrilling precursor to “Days of Thunder,” offering an authentic taste of American auto racing that left me on the edge of my seat. Although it may not quite match up to the Tom Cruise classic, it’s undeniably a heart-pumping spectacle worth checking out.
The Fast and the Furious Franchise
It goes without saying that the Fast and Furious films deserve a spot on our list. Despite their unconventional driving techniques, these movies boast some of the finest action sequences out there. Is further explanation necessary for this blockbuster series?
Ford V. Ferrari
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say that Ford V. Ferrari is an outstanding flick from start to finish! Christian Bale and Matt Damon knock it out of the park with their performances, and the race sequences are nothing short of thrilling. The movie tells the true tale of Carroll Shelby (Damon) and Ken Miles (Bale), as they strive to help Ford defeat the long-time champions at Le Mans, Ferrari. If you’re a racing fan like me, this one is not to be missed!
Freejack
Freejack is a mind-boggling film, possessing elements that are equally captivating and perplexing. Its storyline is outlandish, as future elites snatch bodies from the past to prolong their existence. Undeniably, it’s challenging to follow and leaves one scratching their head. To add to the intrigue, Mick Jagger portrays a character aspiring to seize Emilio Estevez’s body after a racing accident. In essence, the movie is so outlandish that only experiencing it can fully capture its essence.
The Speed Kings
The Speed Kings is included in this list due to its revolutionary nature. Produced in 1913 and starring the renowned Fatty Arbuckle, it was one of the first films to include real racing footage, a sight that was largely unfamiliar to audiences at the time. It’s worth watching for its historical significance as a short film.
Winning
In this film, Paul Newman, alongside his real-life partner Joanne Woodward and Robert Wagner, join forces. The plot revolves around a character played by Newman, an individual with a single ambition in life – to triumph at the prestigious Indy 500. Given that Newman was an ardent racer himself, this role finds him thriving in his natural habitat, and what adds to the charm is the fact that Woodward is also part of the cast.
Death Race 2000
One standout cult film that delves into auto racing is the exhilarating sci-fi action movie known as “Death Race 2000“. Produced by Roger Corman, it can be likened to a more aggressive relative of the comedic road trip flick, “The Cannonball Run.” Despite its lack of humor, the cross-country race sequences in this movie are truly thrilling.
Le Mans
As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but include Steve McQueen on this list. Known for his love of all things automotive and his knack for making iconic car movies, he was part of some of the most memorable car chases in cinema history. In the film Le Mans, he embodies a driver at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans race, a role that perfectly suits him. The movie also boasts real footage from the 1970 race itself, making it an authentic and thrilling experience for car enthusiasts like myself.
Gran Turismo
Similar to other video game adaptations, Gran Turismo isn’t generally considered an outstanding movie. However, I do enjoy the game myself due to its impressive car scenes. While the plot can be criticized, as numerous critics did upon its 2023 release, the actual racing sequences are exceptional, a point that most critics agreed on. If you’re a fan of high-speed car action in films, it’s definitely worth giving it a watch.
The Love Bug
As a gaming enthusiast, there’s no vehicle as legendary in my eyes as the VW Beetle, and none have captivated me quite like Herbie from “The Love Bug”. This iconic character traces its roots back to 1969, launching an enduring franchise that spanned over three decades. Throughout those years, they produced five more Herbie films, which remain fond memories even today. Ignore the minor plot inconsistency about a four-cylinder Beetle dominating races; just let yourself get swept away in the magic of it all!
Cars Franchise
Many children developed a fondness for car racing films following the release of Pixar’s 2006 movie, Cars. Since its debut, this film has garnered a loyal fanbase and has led to multiple sequels, spinoffs, and significantly contributed to Disney’s brand. Notably, the original film also marked Paul Newman’s last (voice) acting performance.
Stroker Ace
Hal Needham, a past stunt coordinator who once worked alongside Burt Reynolds, formed an exceptional duo for high-speed films. They collaborated on “Cannonball Run” and “Smokey & The Bandit”, then created “Stroker Ace” in 1983. Despite its underperformance at the box office, the movie gained popularity as a staple on cable TV during the mid-1980s, earning cult status. It may not be brilliant, but it has some memorable scenes and Reynolds continues to charm just as he did before.
Ready Player One
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say that Ready Player One isn’t just about car racing – it’s more like a dream come true for any ’80s pop culture fan. The initial race is where you’ll find iconic vehicles like the Mach 5 from Speed Racer, Big Foot the monster truck, and even the A-Team van all in one place. This movie is loaded with fun easter eggs, but the race scene stands out as one of the best!
The Art of Racing in the Rain
The movie “The Art of Racing in the Rain” tends to be overly dramatic and quite sentimental, I must admit. However, the racing sequences are truly impressive! Despite finding it challenging to endure due to its excessive emotionality and overly sweet nature, the racing scenes make it worth a watch, at least once.
Grease
Without a doubt, Grease tells a tale of young love among high school students, yet its racing sequences are undeniably one of the most legendary ever captured on film. The car race along the LA river stands as an iconic moment that, if omitted, would be an injustice to the movie’s legacy.
Wreck-It Ralph
Similar to several other films on this list, Wreck-It Ralph deviates from the theme of car racing, or any racing for that matter. Yet, who could resist the charm of Sugar Rush? And that’s why it deserves a spot on lists like this.
Fireball 500
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say if you combined the vibe of “Beach Blanket Bingo” with a high-speed race track, you’d get something like “Fireball 500”. The racing sequences in this flick are surprisingly top-notch, but let me tell you, it’s a bit of a wild ride. It’s so over-the-top that it’s almost surreal, making it a must-watch just to appreciate its unique place in pop culture history.
The Racers
Rudolf Caracciola, a pioneer in Formula One racing, is the inspiration behind the film “The Racers.” This movie offers a dramatized portrayal of his life and career. Over many years, Caracciola’s racing journey was not devoid of conflicts, but it provides an exciting basis for the movie. In the film, Kirk Douglas takes on the role of Gino Borgesa, a fictional representation of Caracciola.
The Gumball Rally
During the mid-1970s, high-speed cross-country car races gained immense popularity in Hollywood, and arguably the most renowned of these films is “The Gumball Rally” from 1976. This movie even sparked real-life races with similar themes, which speaks volumes about the impressive racing sequences it presented. These scenes were revolutionary for their time.
Viva Las Vegas
Although Viva Las Vegas isn’t particularly great, it’s significant for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was successful, largely due to Elvis Presley starring in it. Secondly, the theme song you find yourself humming now is from this very movie, which adds to its noteworthiness and justifies its mention here.
