As a hopeless romantic who’s watched more rom-coms than I care to admit, I must say that “Sliding Doors” is one of those rare gems that manages to make you laugh, cry, and root for the couple until the very end. The scene where Will interrupts Anna’s press conference to ask for a second chance is undoubtedly one of the funniest moments in the movie – it’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion, knowing full well that the characters are about to collide. The look on their faces when they finally realize who each other is? Priceless!
The 1990s were home to some exceptional romantic comedies, many of which rank among the all-time greats. One such film is Roger Michell’s “Notting Hill,” released in 1999, written by Richard Curtis. This movie offered a delightful blend of humor and romance, as we watch Julia Roberts’ character, renowned actress Anna Scott, develop feelings for Hugh Grant’s Will Thacker, a single bookstore owner residing in Notting Hill, London.
The classic movie Notting Hill continues to bring joy, laughter, tears, and even romantic feelings with its memorable scenes and quotes. Here, we’ll explore some of the film’s most impactful moments, as it stands out as one of Julia Roberts’ finest performances and among Hugh Grant’s best romantic comedies.
William Introducing Us To Notting Hill
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but appreciate how Notting Hill masterfully introduces its lead characters and highlights the stark differences between their worlds. Initially, we witness Anna, glamorous on red carpets, surrounded by flashing cameras and admirers. But then, the narrative shifts to introduce Will, a humble bookshop owner residing in the vibrant Notting Hill district of London, painting a picture of his more modest lifestyle. This effective juxtaposition builds anticipation for their unforgettable encounter.
Will Catches A Shoplifter In The Act
Will’s interaction with Rufus, who was trying to steal a book from his store, is filled with amusing politeness. Instead of confronting him directly, Will gently informs Rufus about the security cameras in the store. This seems to catch Rufus off guard, but he eventually admits that there might be a book hidden in his pants. Fortunately, the situation remains calm, and Will offers Rufus two choices: either purchase the book or return it to the shelf.
“I was gonna steal one, but now I’ve changed my mind.”
Anna’s amusing response to observing Will’s interaction with a thief becomes even more comical because, at this moment, Will appears not to have recognized her yet. However, it wasn’t until Rufus boldly went up to her for an autograph that he finally connected the dots.
Will Awkwardly Offering Anna Food
At this juncture, Anna and Will’s meeting has intensified into an incident marked by a large spill of orange juice and Will inviting Anna to his house to change out of her now-wet blouse. Remarkably, she agrees. However, the discomfort doesn’t subside, as Anna finds herself in Will’s kitchen, dressed in a questionable outfit for daytime, yet one that’s certainly less clammy than her previous one. She refuses all items Will offers from his fridge, including honey-soaked apricots.
Will And Anna’s First Kiss
In simpler terms, you wouldn’t anticipate a series of awkward meetings leading up to a kiss, unless it was in a romantic comedy. However, given the circumstances, Anna unexpectedly kissing Will after their numerous uncomfortable interactions feels endearing and sweet rather than improbable.
“Oh my god, my flatmate. I’m sorry. There’s no excuse for him.”
In a somewhat surprising manner, Anna and Will’s first kiss could have left them both feeling awkward. However, luckily for them, just as things seemed tense, Spike (played by Rhys Ifans) entered the room. With the sound of a key turning in the lock, Will hastily tried to apologize for any potential backlash from his flatmate, a reaction that, as we later see, was not entirely unwarranted.
“Imagine, somewhere in the world, there’s a man who’s allowed to kiss her.”
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, there’s an amusing twist in this scene where Will and Spike are huddled up watching one of Anna’s films together. At first glance, it seems like a joke that just a while ago, Will was the lucky guy who got to lock lips with Anna Scott. But the real chuckle comes when we realize that Spike, oblivious soul that he is, hasn’t put two and two together yet – that the woman on the screen is none other than the one he bumped into when he sauntered into the house earlier!
When William Finds Himself Interviewing Anna
The entire series of events is nothing less than amusing. Anna invites Will to her hotel to talk and apologize for the kiss, but she’s engrossed in a media event for her new movie when he arrives. Instead of clarifying to Anna’s PR representative that he was invited by Anna, Will swiftly fabricates a story and claims to be a reporter from Horse & Hound, then proceeds to interview her as if it were the truth.
“Any horses in that one? Or hounds, for that matter. Our readers are equally intrigued by both species.”
Due to constant interruptions from someone linked to the film, Will persists in questioning Anna about an unseen movie, aiming to write an article for the first magazine he encountered while waiting for the interview. Notably, neither of the movies Anna is promoting (one set in space) or her upcoming project (based on a submarine) involve horses or hounds. Consequently, his questions seem to lead nowhere.
“This is one of those key moments in life when it’s possible you can be really, genuinely cool and I’m going to fail just 100%.”
Generally, when people meet Anna, they try to act casual, but Will’s sister Honey (Emma Chambers) is different from the start. As soon as Will introduces Anna at her birthday dinner, Honey openly admits that she can’t hide her feelings in this situation. Instead, she proposes becoming best friends right on the spot.
When Bernie Finally Realizes Who Anna Is
At Honey’s birthday dinner, while Max, Bella, and others swiftly realize that Anna is none other than a renowned actress, Bernie appears oblivious to this fact. His conversation with Anna about her acting career seems devoid of any recognition. It isn’t until after she steps away to use the restroom that he learns her true identity, forcing him to reevaluate their entire conversation from a fresh perspective.
Anna Joining In On The Contest To Win The Last Brownie
It’s wonderful to observe Anna relaxing and enjoying the lighthearted atmosphere during Honey’s birthday dinner. However, the mood shifts as a spontaneous competition over the last brownie on the table arises, with the dessert serving as the prize. In the spirit of the contest, Anna steps in and shares some challenging aspects of her life. After a brief pause, they all laugh off her attempt to secure the brownie, but prior to that moment, it was a poignant yet bittersweet display of vulnerability from Anna, which everyone seemed to acknowledge until the tension needed to be alleviated.
“You said whoopsidaisies”
Each time I witness this scene, I can’t help but burst out laughing. Perhaps it’s the way Anna giggles, then demands that Will verify he actually said “whoopsidaisies,” making him seem like a little girl with golden curls from decades past. Or maybe it’s because, following this awkward moment he attempts to brush aside, Will again tries to scale the park gate and tumbles back down with another “whoosidaisies,” which only intensifies Anna’s laughter.
“Come and sit with me.”
I adore how Will allows Anna to savor a private moment on the park bench, seemingly understanding she’s touched by the plaque’s inscription. Later, she invites him to join her, and he obliges. This tender scene is made even more poignant by the perspective from above, with the camera gradually pulling away, as if respecting their privacy during this sweet, romantic instance.
William Wearing His Prescription Goggles At The Movies
It was quite predictable that Will would eventually use his prescription snorkeling goggles in the film, and indeed this happens when he’s running late for his date with Anna and can’t find his glasses. In a humorous twist, he ends up sitting next to her during the movie, peering at it through those unusual goggles. This seems to tickle Anna’s funny bone.
When Anna Tells Off The Men At The Restaurant
It’s quite a fulfilling instant, as you witness Anna and Will eavesdrop on a group of men chatting about Anna Scott at a restaurant. Initially, it appears the chat is casual banter, but it quickly becomes harsh and offensive, with their opinions about Anna Scott becoming increasingly disrespectful. Unable to take it any longer, Will steps up to ask them to cease. The men dismiss him, but they are eventually silenced when Anna decides to confront them and set them straight.
Meeting Anna’s Terrible Boyfriend
At a moment when Will and Anna appear to be thriving, an unexpected twist arises – just as Anna invites Will to her hotel room, we learn that Anna has a boyfriend named Jeff, who’s suddenly appeared unannounced. Despite his friendly demeanor, we can’t help but dislike Jeff because he seems overly confident and clueless about the fact that Will isn’t actually the room service guy. However, Jeff demonstrates how truly detestable he is when he subtly suggests Anna to be careful with her food orders, fearing she might gain weight, which could reflect negatively on him. But Jeff doesn’t express his concern in those exact words.
“You are lovelier this morning than you have ever been.”
In the movie, it’s not until later on that Will and Anna share a night together, an event complicated by the fact that Anna is seeking refuge from the media following the reemergence of some old photographs. The following morning, in a reference to Rita Hayworth, Anna expresses her worry that Will may have been disillusioned upon waking up next to a real person instead of his fantasy. However, Will responds with an incredibly apt remark that instantly eases her concerns.
“Can I stay a bit longer?” Anna – “Stay forever.” William
When I believed Will had reached the pinnacle of romance with his “you’re even more beautiful” remark, something unexpected happened. As Anna requested an extension on her stay at his place, Will casually mentioned that he would be perfectly content if she decided to stay permanently.
Spike Posing For The Photographers
Instead of letting opportunities pass him by, Spike tends to act on them impulsively. However, his eagerness sometimes gets the better of him, as he demonstrated when he revealed to Will that he may have shared Anna’s accommodation arrangement with a few folks at the pub before their confession. Earlier, he basked in brief fame by striking a pose for photographers, flaunting his muscles for the cameras.
Time Passing After Anna Leaves
For a second time, the relationship between Will and Anna disintegrates, leaving us and Will feeling just as shattered. In this pivotal moment of the film, we witness him returning to his life in Notting Hill, with the changing seasons mirrored in the leaves on the trees lining the street, hinting at the passage of time. To make our hearts ache even more, the song “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Lighthouse Family plays, underscoring the gloominess of the situation.
When Honey Announces Her Engagement
Over a heartfelt dinner celebrating my friend’s closed restaurant, Honey shares some thrilling news that brightens up the night. She’s taking the leap and getting engaged! I can’t help but feel overjoyed for her happiness, but things take an unexpected turn when she whispers in Spike’s ear – it’s him she’s planning to tie the knot with! Thankfully, Spike seems just as excited. It’s a sweet moment that leaves us both grinning from ear to ear.
The Interruptions When Anna’s Attempting To Reconnect With Will
On multiple occasions, Will and Anna have attempted to be a couple, but something has consistently prevented their relationship. Whenever Anna tries to express her desire for them to be together, they’re frequently interrupted – once by a call from Will’s mother, another time by a customer returning, even though the store doesn’t stock John Grisham thrillers. Despite this interruption, Will does answer his mother’s call and sends away the pesky customer (as Roger Frost’s character is called).
“I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”
This well-known quote from the film is undeniably one that fans recall fondly, not least because of Meryl Streep’s emotional portrayal of it. However, this line serves another purpose too: it symbolizes Anna as a woman who yearns for Will’s affection, transcending her celebrity and wealth. Regrettably, overcoming the multitude of other obstacles proves to be more than Will can manage at that moment.
“Well, you know. Anyone saying they want to go out with you is pretty great, right?”
It appears that Spike’s reaction, which included calling Will a name and showing obvious disgust upon learning that Will had rejected Anna, was spot-on. However, it seems like Bernie is the one who eventually influences Will’s thoughts. Despite everyone backing Will’s decision to stay away from Anna, Bernie’s comment about how enjoyable it can be when someone wants to go out with you seems to have made Will see that, fundamentally, he is in a situation where Anna desires him. The rest of the issues seem insignificant compared to this realization.
Spike Directing Traffic
In other romantic comedies, the climactic scene often involves a mad race to locate the love interest and ask for another chance, but Notting Hill excels in this convention. We witness Will and his companions on a quest to find Anna, first at her hotel and later at the venue of her press conference. Remarkably, it is Spike who ultimately rescues the situation by leaping from the overcrowded car and darting into traffic, creating a safe passage for Max’s car to pass through.
“Thacker. His name’s Thacker.”
This situation isn’t something we were anticipating, but it’s one of the funniest unexpected moments in the film for me. During a press conference, Will suddenly asks Anna for another chance. At this point, only Anna appears to recognize him. When Will is discussing hypothetically about the man whose house Anna was photographed at, another reporter jumps in to clarify that the man’s name is “Thacker.” Interestingly enough, “Thacker” happens to be Will’s own name.
The Way William And Anna Look At Each Other At The Press Conference
The grand finale happens when Anna re-answers the question about how long she’ll be in London, and she answers “indefinitely” this time, indicating that maybe things aren’t over with her and this Thacker guy. And that’s when the room figures out that the man in the pink shirt is, indeed, Will Thacker, and all their attention turns to him. But Will and Anna can’t take their eyes off of each other, and it’s clear they’re both in this for the long haul.
When Spike Shows Off His Ridiculous T-Shirts
At the start of the movie, we gain insight into Spike’s character as he reveals potential t-shirts for his upcoming date, among them one that says “I love blood.” Thankfully, Will dissuades him from choosing it. However, the shirt he eventually settles on isn’t much better.
Will And Anna’s Kiss In The Park
In the cover of darkness, I’d ventured into the park, and there, my heart skipped a beat as Will and Anna found themselves sharing their second kiss. Initiated by Anna, yet sparked by my own question about whether our secret infiltration was truly justified, it was a moment that felt magical under the starlit sky. The movie later left me with a warm glow as they were seen lounging together in this very park, a poignant reminder of their stolen moments hidden away. Though they may have been officially allowed to be there later on, that initial scene on the bench was a delightful callback to our shared secret tryst.
“Sorry, they always do that when I leave.”
What would be your response if a famous celebrity unexpectedly attended an intimate birthday party of a friend or family member? Initially, Will’s friends managed to maintain their composure throughout the evening, but once they departed, they couldn’t help but burst into applause and laughter over the entire incident. And when Will and Anna hear about it from outside, he playfully dismisses the situation as if this is just how they behave whenever he steps out.
“There’s something wrong with this yogurt.”
What’s funnier – that Spike is eating spoonfuls of mayonnaise that he thinks is yogurt, or that he continues to eat it even after Will informs him that it’s mayo? Not sure, don’t care. It’s gross, but so funny.
