343's future with the Halo franchise is lost in a sea of speculation

As a longtime fan of the Halo series, I’ve been following the developments at 343 Industries with bated breath. Having grown up playing the original Halo games created by Bungie, it’s been an emotional rollercoaster to see the series under the stewardship of another studio.

It seems that the Halo series may encounter more difficulties, as developer 343 Industries is reportedly facing an unclear future. Previously, Bungie led the franchise during its formative years; however, since then, 343 Industries has been at the helm, starting with 2011’s Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.

I’ve been following the Halo series with great excitement, experiencing both the thrilling highs like Halo 4 and the disappointing lows such as Halo: Spartan Strike. However, 2021’s Halo Infinite held a unique position for me – it started off strongly, showing potential to challenge the likes of Call of Duty: Vanguard. Yet, despite an inspiring beginning, Infinite ultimately fell short of living up to its boundless moniker.

No one knows what’s going on with Halo

As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share some insights about the current state of 343 Industries based on available information. Here’s a quick rundown:

There are numerous buzzworthy headlines circulating online suggesting that 343 is no longer in charge of creating the next Halo game. Instead, it seems they will only be overseeing the development process for this upcoming title, following the release of Halo Infinite’s sequel.

According to reliable Halo insider @BathrobeCast on X (previously known as Twitter), there was an extensive discussion about topic X with many developers leaving 343 Industries following the release of Infinite. Additionally, a round of layoffs and failure to hire contractors as full-time employees has resulted in a reported decrease in staff numbers, now estimated to be below 300 people.

The main point is that 343 could mainly work on the idea and early stages of the project, overseeing development while other studios handle most of the game’s creation. There were comments about Microsoft having “doubts” about 343, but BathrobeCast has explained that this was misconstrued by some people.

Regarding the upcoming developments for the Halo franchise, the original post asserts that there are two projects in their initial stages. One of these projects is reportedly a larger-scale multiplayer experience, which aligns well with the series’ popularity among players who enjoy the competitive aspect. Given its similarity to Call of Duty and the significant following for Halo’s multiplayer component, this upcoming project seems like a logical progression.

As a gamer, I’ve heard my share of rumors that turn out to be just hype. One recent one caught my attention when some industry insider named Jez Corden claimed that the news about 343 Industries being demoted and no longer developing Halo games was false. He wrote on social media, “I’ve checked into the latest Xbox rumor going around: ‘343i isn’t going to develop Halo games’ and instead only ‘oversee’ them – false if you believed it.” So, gamers, don’t fall for every rumor you hear out there. Some of them might just be hype!

He pointed out that with over 343 employees and ongoing job openings, managing such a team is quite an endeavor. The company’s activities remain unclear; it could be all systems go for the next Halo project or a possible slowdown, but no definitive information has been released.

It’s been rumored that we might receive a remake of Combat Evolved together with the upcoming main entry, but both projects are predicted to still be some time in the future. With Halo Infinite reaching its third anniversary in December and the game being phased out, there could be a significant void in our lives shaped like Halo.
