As someone who has followed the Marvel Universe for decades, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about the Netflix series. They truly captured the gritty, street-level vibe that makes these characters so compelling. So, to answer your question, should there be a fourth Punisher movie? Absolutely!
There’s something unusual about stating it openly, yet it seems that few other Marvel characters, apart from perhaps the Fantastic Four, have had as numerous opportunities for redemption or comebacks as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher.
To clarify, while it’s true that characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men have been featured more prominently in movies recently, one might question if the studios were truly taking a risk with such well-known characters. The Punisher, after all, is a character who consistently portrays violent and adult themes, yet we’ve seen three R-rated films and a graphic Netflix series about him, none of which have achieved the same level of financial success as Spider-Man or the X-Men.
That said, I still think Disney should try again with the character for a fourth movie. Here’s why.
After The Success Of Deadpool & Wolverine, A Hard R Punisher Movie Sounds Like A Good Next Mature Film For The MCU
I found myself thoroughly enjoying both Deadpool and Wolverine (and it’s clear I’m not the only one), but what truly caught my attention was how the executives at Disney, of all places, would let a film with such explicit language and intense violence be part of their portfolio.
Indeed, there have been other R-rated Marvel films previously (such as Blade, which is as impressive as you recall), but I never imagined a day when an R-rated Disney Marvel movie would become reality. After all, it was quite a sensation when Star Lord uttered a single F-bomb. Yet here we are, with too many instances of the F-bomb being dropped in Deadpool and Wolverine to count.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, there’s a world of difference between a character like Deadpool and one like the Punisher. The tone in Deadpool and Wolverine is more like a joke – it’s loaded with profanity and violence, but it’s all played for laughs. It’s not meant to be taken too seriously, you know?
Indeed, I’ve come across quite a few kids who are fans of Deadpool. Consequently, one might say that Deadpool is an entertaining character, and to some extent, his R-rated status becomes less daunting, offering a slight softening, albeit minimally.
The Punisher, however, is not about fun at all. This is a character who is not against torturing people, or killing them outright, in order to get what he wants. If Deadpool is an “immature” character, then the Punisher is the polar opposite.
From a dedicated fan’s perspective, if any Marvel character were to grace the screen in an R-rated movie, I firmly believe it should be none other than Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. With the foundation laid by previous Punisher films and his Netflix series already pushing mature boundaries, he seems perfectly suited for such a role.
If Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) were to incorporate The Punisher into a film, many fans might find this quite satisfying. It could also pave the way for an entire series of adult-oriented, R-rated MCU movies, which sounds appealing to many. Why wouldn’t it?
The Movie Could Pull From The Netflix Marvel Shows
One aspect that truly captivated me in the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” was, you guessed it, the extensive array of appearances by characters from the Fox Marvel cinematic universe.
As a devoted admirer, I must say, those cameos weren’t everyone’s cup of tea, and even the director himself acknowledges the misconception that they were merely added for shock value. However, from my perspective, they significantly enriched the narrative and transformed what could have been just another installment in a franchise into a lasting legacy project.
It’s my belief that introducing characters from the Netflix Marvel series into a potential fourth film would make for an exciting and fresh take on the storyline.
In the highly-bingeable series, Echo, we currently have characters such as Daredevil and Kingpin. However, it would be delightful to see other Marvel Netflix characters make a comeback, including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, although I must admit that Iron Fist might not be the best choice for reintroduction (Let’s just forget about Iron Fist for now).
It’s my strong belief that we might witness a reunion of the Marvel Netflix series, which were frequently as captivating (or even more so) than the shows available on Disney+. Frankly, it’s hard to resist the urge to see Jessica Jones and Luke Cage back in action. I can’t possibly be alone in this desire.
It Could Open The Door To Even More Street Level Characters Not Yet Established In The MCU
Initially, I believed that my beloved Marvel hero, Moon Knight, would remain absent from the MCU. But lo and behold, not only did he appear, but an entire series dedicated to him unfolded! Although the show didn’t live up to all my expectations, it was thrilling to witness a more grounded Marvel character like Moon Knight gaining mainstream popularity – quite a refreshing twist indeed.
Nevertheless, there remains a significant number of street-level Marvel characters yet to appear in the MCU. In my opinion, another Punisher movie could serve as an ideal platform for introducing these characters.
For example, even though we got Tombstone in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, we still haven’t gotten him in the MCU, and I would love to see him. Same goes for Hammerhead, who would be an interesting character to add to the roster.
And regarding Mr. Negative, although he leans towards the supernatural, I’m confident they can find a way to incorporate him into their plans.
Speaking of Moon Knight, wouldn’t it be fantastic if he and The Punisher joined forces in a film? I’m just brainstorming here, but there’s immense potential for a Punisher movie, especially if they incorporate other street-level Marvel characters. It could be quite exhilarating!
It Could Very Easily Lead Into A New Season For The Character On Disney+
Additionally, I’m aware that The Punisher might potentially secure his own Disney+ TV series following his role in the upcoming show, “Daredevil: Born Again.” However, wouldn’t it be exciting if his appearance in this series paved the way for a standalone movie first, and subsequently, we could enjoy a Disney+ show based on those events?
It’s my belief that this is significant, as it could serve as an introduction to the character of The Punisher for many individuals who haven’t previously watched the Netflix series.
It’s possible that The Punisher plays a significant role or a smaller part in this tale, similar to how Daredevil was featured in Echo. Regardless, I believe it’s crucial for Disney to provide The Punisher with a standout appearance, and the optimal place for this would be in a film prior to launching a dedicated TV series for him.
One possibility for rephrasing: A gritty, R-rated Punisher film could establish a distinct tone for a new TV show, distinguishing it from the Netflix version. This approach might further elevate his popularity, making it an ideal moment to launch a standalone series featuring him. It’s just an idea.
What do you think? Should there be a fourth Punisher movie?
