5 Gothic Horror Films Usher in 2025 Revival

If someone has been disconnected from the internet or carefully customized their feed to focus on subjects they are deeply interested in, they might have overlooked the widespread excitement and fascination with Robert Eggers’ latest film, Nosferatu. Featuring Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen and Bill Skarsgard as Count Orlok, this movie is a modern reinterpretation of the ’90s horror classic. Receiving largely favorable reviews, Nosferatu is the first of several movies based on Gothic horror masterpieces scheduled for release in 2025 (Nosferatu was released towards the end of 2024).

Comparing “Frankenstein” starring Oscar Isaac and “Dracula: A Love Story” featuring Caleb Landry Jones and Christopher Waltz, it appears that these period pieces effectively reflect contemporary sentiments through their depiction of eerie villages, palpable mistrust, and the creation of modern-day scapegoats. This theme of fascination with the grotesque mirrors current audience interests in the macabre. Similarly, movies such as “Wolf Man” and “Sinners” reimagine classic Gothic horror motifs within a contemporary narrative. “Wolf Man” centers around a man trying to safeguard his family from a menacing wolf, while “Sinners” revolves around a pair of twins preparing for the arrival of an impending evil.

‘Nosferatu’

The movie titled Nosferatu focuses on Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) and Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult), a couple residing in Wisburg, Germany. When Thomas is assigned to sell an eerie estate to Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgard), he initially finds it unremarkable. However, after his meeting with Count Orlok, bizarre incidents like the spread of disease, nighttime attacks, and unsettling dreams compel him to delve deeply into uncovering the truth behind these ominous happenings.

‘Nosferatu’ Sets The Precedent For the Rest of 2025

The movie “Nosferatu” has received positive feedback from critics, with a common theme being that the actors portraying Ellen and Count Orlok deliver chilling and captivating performances. Viewers are drawn into the fear stemming from Ellen and Orlok’s complex relationship throughout the film. From their first encounter to their subsequent meeting, the movie strives to depict the nuances of both characters’ predicaments. Similar to many other films, it maintains a delicate balance between the suffering these characters endure and the suffering they inflict on others. However, “Nosferatu” ultimately highlights the guilt shared by Ellen, Orlok, and Thomas (played by Nicholas Frost), among others.

The film Nosferatu, being a classic example of Gothic horror, might prompt both movie enthusiasts and critics to ponder if it stands out uniquely as a triumph for Gothic horrors or if future films will share similar acclaim. However, the film’s attempts to underscore the terror and revulsion of Orlok are also effective in drawing comparisons between 19th-century Wismburg and our world as it progresses into the mid-2020s.

‘Dracula – A Love Tale’

In the newest rendition of Bram Stoker’s novel, titled “Dracula, A Love Story“, Caleb Landry Jones assumes the iconic role, wearing the eternal black cape and sharp white fangs. Unlike previous portrayals that emphasized Dracula as a formidable villain, this adaptation focuses on exploring Dracula’s deep desire for authentic love.

A New Dracula Arrives, Potentially

In the popular understanding, Dracula is known for his malevolent actions and ability to cause chaos around the Harkers and their circle. However, despite this, there remains a captivating interest in Dracula’s solitude and yearning for love. The film “Dracula, A Love Story,” directed by Luc Besson, seeks to explore this side of Dracula’s character. This portrayal presents him as a grieving husband who perceives his deceased wife in a new woman. Although centuries have passed since the original tragedy, this potential love interest may offer Dracula an opportunity for healing.

As the release of the movie draws near, viewers might be unsure about how filmmaker Besson will portray Dracula. One possible representation could make Dracula more relatable and romantic, thereby minimizing his questionable and harmful actions. Alternatively, the movie might offer reasons for his abusive behavior, linking it to his sorrow. Handling a complex character like Dracula necessitates an understanding of his identity, motivations, and those of other characters. With numerous intriguing personalities at play, Dracula, A Love Story has multiple promising paths to follow in the hope of delivering a valuable addition to the storied legacy of this illustrious figure.

‘Frankenstein’

In this retelling, Frankenstein explores the idea of humans trying to imitate God’s creation. The narrative centers around the quirky scientist Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac), who gathers discarded body parts from a graveyard and uses them in an experiment to create a new being. This creature is able to move and express feelings, but when Victor rejects it as a monstrosity, a chain of terrifying incidents unfolds, which he then endeavors to resolve.

Frankenstein Reevaluated

The Guillermo Del Toro-led production is set to premiere on Netflix towards the end of this year. With a horror maestro like Del Toro at the helm, viewers can anticipate authentic portrayals of the story’s crucial and heart-wrenching scenes that will truly send shivers down their spines. Additionally, Frankenstein explores themes such as free will, destiny, accountability, and unrestrained ambition, inviting audiences to follow Victor’s struggle with the repercussions of his scientific endeavor.

As the release date for the movie nears, it promises to be intriguing to observe its interaction with the motifs prevalent in this year’s Gothic horror films. For example, figures like Dracula, Frankenstein, and Count Orlok embody themes of isolation and dehumanization. In a world gripped by an enduring phobia of the unfamiliar, Frankenstein offers a unique platform to delve into this concept through its titular character’s creation, as well as the creation of the “other” by Frankenstein himself. This exploration aims to highlight the repercussions of such experiments and their parallels with real-life attitudes towards those considered ‘foreign’ or ‘subhuman’.

‘Wolf Man’

In the film titled “Wolf Man,” featuring Christopher Abbott from “Girls,” an ordinary-seeming family is introduced. Yet, when tales of wolf attacks circulate, it’s natural for them to worry about their loved ones’ safety. As the full moon draws near, they are in store for a chilling revelation and must struggle to stay alive during the night, all while uncovering the source of the lycanthropy that could potentially endanger them.

An Intimate Body Horror Experiment

As a cinephile diving into uncharted waters, I must say that this movie, despite receiving a blend of opinions, has certainly caught my attention. What truly impressed me was its portrayal of acting prowess and an attempt to encapsulate a vital component of Gothic horror narratives.

By utilizing the eerie and grotesque, it mirrors the unsettling emotions that parents often grapple with – a perfect fit for the genre, serving as a metaphor for real-world examples of suppression, subjugation, and dread. Yet, it also resonates with modern-day parental worries, along with the misuse of these concerns by political figures.

Director Leigh Whannell shares this perspective, linking the surge in popularity of monster movies to the challenging times we’re all trying to navigate. As James Metzrer aptly points out, this fascination dates back to the 1950s, when the nuclear arms race sparked a keen interest in monster films such as Godzilla. Additionally, films like The Exorcist from the 60s and 70s tackled issues of immigration, youth anxieties, and ongoing war concerns. Although Wolf Man might not be the epitome of the Gothic revival, it does focus on a societal aspect that serves as a significant source of stress for everyday people.

‘Sinners’

Sinners” – a forthcoming collaboration between Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan

In 2025, this film is expected to hit screens. The story centers around twin brothers, played by Michael B. Jordan, who find themselves discontented with their lives and decide to revisit their hometown. However, the return proves to be tainted by an evil that they had not foreseen.

This film is set in the 1930s and it seamlessly merges the chilling reality of de jure and de facto white supremacist ideology with the terror induced by the unknown and supernatural.

Sinners & the Significance of Southern Gothic Horror

Initially, the plot of the movie might appear daring. Nevertheless, Gothic literature has historically delved into the stereotyping of outsiders. It’s rumored that the film could feature supernatural beings such as vampires, zombies, and others as antagonists threatening the twin protagonists. Yet, considering the era and setting, Sinners could be a symbol of the resurgence of Southern Gothic literature, much like how fans view Eve’s Bayou as a contemporary masterpiece embodying captivating Southern Gothic narratives.

From my perspective, much like how European Gothic horror tales have been shaped by prejudices such as xenophobia towards Eastern Europeans and anti-semitism, racism against African Americans has played a significant role in shaping horror narratives over the years. With the ongoing issue of dehumanization faced by the Black community being a topic of great debate, the upcoming work Sinners could potentially present thought-provoking insights about destiny, free will, and safety. Moreover, it might contrast the black protagonists with supernatural beings, given that the former are frequently marginalized in reality, while the latter can serve as a symbol for this very marginalization.
