5 Reasons Why I’m Finally More Excited For A DC Cinematic Universe Than I Am For The MCU

If you enjoy comic book movies, then it’s been hard being a DC fan for the past few years.

Indeed, those who are ardent supporters of the Snyderverse might argue differently. However, as someone who was content with the conclusion of the Snyderverse, myself and numerous other DC fans have had the opportunity to witness Marvel’s success, while DC has unfortunately stumbled and fumbled repeatedly.

As a long-time comic book fan and a connoisseur of cinematic universes, let me tell you, I’ve been around the block a few times. I’ve seen the highs and lows of DC and Marvel, and I must admit, I was starting to grow weary of the MCU’s dominance in the superhero movie scene. But then, James Gunn entered the picture, and now I’m more pumped for the DC Universe than ever before!

You see, I remember when James first burst onto the scene with “Guardians of the Galaxy.” That film was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale superhero genre. With his quirky humor, unique storytelling, and knack for creating memorable characters, he showed us that comic book movies could be more than just action and special effects.

Now that he’s at the helm of the DCU, I have faith that we’ll see a similar transformation. Gunn has already proven himself to be a master storyteller, and with his vision for the DC Universe, I believe we’re in for something truly special. So, while some might still prefer the MCU, I, for one, am ready to embrace the new era of DC cinema under James Gunn’s guidance. Bring on the superheroes!

The MCU Shows Have Grown Kind Of Stale As Of Late, Whereas The Penguin Proves That DC Can Deliver The Goods On The Television Front

Previously, I couldn’t get enough of the Marvel TV series. Every week, I would prioritize staying up late to catch each fresh episode as it appeared on Disney+.

In 2025, it’s hard to imagine me logging into Disney+ to explore the MCU offerings. More like, Why should I bother? Instead of wondering What If…?, I find myself indifferent. I’ve heard positive reviews about Agatha All Along, but my interest just isn’t there. As for Daredevil: Born Again, if someone had told me two years ago that a new Daredevil show was coming out, I would have been overjoyed. Now, the thought of opening my Disney+ app seems less appealing.

Despite my dislike for the character, Oz Cobblepot, I couldn’t help but be utterly captivated by the latest DC series, “The Penguin.

I wasn’t anticipating much from the “Creature Commandos,” but it turned out to be one of the most captivating shows I’ve watched in ages. Interestingly enough, I’m quite eager for the upcoming “Lanterns” TV series, despite not being a fan of Green Lantern previously.

Having grown up immersed in the world of comics, I can confidently say that the DC Universe (DCU) feels like a blazing inferno compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which seems more like a smoldering ember. My years spent engrossed in the rich tapestry of DC characters have forged a deep connection, and I believe I’ve pinpointed one reason for this stark difference…

I Also Like How It’s Perfectly Natural For DC To Go R-Rated Whenever It Wants, However Marvel Seems To Need To Make Exceptions

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, when I initially heard that Deadpool and Wolverine were slated for an R-rating, I must admit, I harbored some doubts. After all, this was the same studio that sent shockwaves through the industry with an unexpected F-bomb in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Honestly, I didn’t think the MCU would ever venture into R-rated territory… that is, until I laid my eyes on that electrifying red band trailer.

It seems to me that Warner Bros., unlike the MCU, doesn’t shy away from R-rated content in their superhero stories. Given this, and with James Gunn now in charge, I believe they have an opportunity to push these boundaries even more, further distinguishing themselves in the process.

Frankly, I’ve grown somewhat weary of comic book adaptations on screen, particularly those adhering to the family-friendly style of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But viewing The Penguin, with its gritty, adult-oriented content, I couldn’t help but appreciate the freedom it had from the constraints of a PG-13/TV-14 rating typically imposed by the MCU.

I don’t believe every DC story requires a Rated-R classification, far from it for the upcoming Superman film. Yet, given James Gunn’s previous success with R-rated movies like The Suicide Squad, it wouldn’t surprise me if he were to create another one.

To be honest, given the recent portrayals of The Penguin and Joker, I’m eagerly anticipating an R-rated Batman film. It’s a level of excitement that surpasses anything the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently offering. And speaking of the MCU…

I Think The Upcoming Slate Of DC Movies Sounds A Lot More Interesting That What We Know So Far Of The MCU’s Line-Up

Apologies, yet I find myself underwhelmed upon examining the lineup for Phase 5 and Phase 6 of the MCU. Truthfully, I yearn to feel excited about titles such as “Captain America: Brave New World” or “Thunderbolts”, but my enthusiasm seems hard to ignite at this moment.

Of course, it’s likely that I’ll be quite enthusiastic about “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” given my affinity for anything related to the Fantastic Four, including less-than-stellar movies. However, I couldn’t muster up a single bit of interest for another Avengers film at this point.

As a lifelong fan of DC comics, I am beyond excited for the upcoming slate of movies. Growing up, Superman was always my least favorite superhero, but the latest trailer has me practically drooling in anticipation. It’s amazing how a well-crafted trailer can change one’s perception. Moving on to 2026, I am thrilled to see Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow featuring Lobo, one of my all-time favorite DC characters, played by Jason Momoa – who in my opinion, is perfect for the role. And to top off an already stellar year, we’ll also get a movie centered around Clayface, my favorite Batman villain, as well as (hopefully) The Batman: Part II. As someone who has been following DC movies since their early days, I can confidently say that this is shaping up to be the best lineup yet.

It seems you’re asking about the DC films. To be honest, I wasn’t particularly thrilled about upcoming DC movies until they involved Batman. During the Snyderverse era, we received a series of films that were building up to the Justice League, but none of them resonated with me.

I watched every single one of them, without exception! Movie after movie, my disappointment grew, until I even skipped the second “Aquaman” and only caught “The Flash” when it aired on MAX. And guess what? I didn’t enjoy it at all.

Personally, I find myself quite optimistic about DC’s future, having grown up reading their comics and being deeply connected to the characters they represent. On the other hand, despite its global success, I must admit that I have lost interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This shift is largely due to my personal preferences and the way each universe caters to those preferences, as well as my own evolving tastes and expectations.

We Are Also Getting A Sort Of A Reboot With DC, Whereas The MCU Seems To Be Running On A Treadmill

As someone who grew up watching and loving the classic DC stories, I must confess that the Snyderverse left me feeling rather disappointed. It seemed to stray too far from the heart and soul of what makes these characters so beloved. But now, with the new direction for DC and Superman serving as a fresh start, I’m absolutely thrilled! Having spent my formative years immersed in the world of DC Comics, I can’t wait to see how they bring these iconic stories back to life.

Besides that, it seems we’re in for quite a treat from DC with upcoming stories like Sgt. Rock (Hop to it, Easy Company!), a fresh Swamp Thing film, and long-awaited Constantine 2.

As someone who has grown up with Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, I must confess that my enthusiasm for the franchise has waned over time. Don’t get me wrong, I adore classics like “The Avengers” and “Spider-Man,” but after countless sequels and reboots, I yearn for something fresh and daring. My favorite Marvel movie to date is “Eternals.” This film was a risk worth taking because it offered a unique perspective that the MCU had yet to explore. Despite being met with criticism, its boldness and originality are qualities I’ve been craving in Marvel films for years now, but sadly, have not found since.

To be frank, instead of exploring fresh cinematic landscapes, it seems we’re merely churning out additional Avengers films. Frankly, this leaves me feeling as if the Marvel Cinematic Universe is stuck on a relentless treadmill, and I must confess, I’m growing weary of it.

I just want something new from the MCU, and it doesn’t look like I’m ever going to get it, while DC is full of nothing but excitement. And I think we have one man to truly thank for it.

I Always Thought James Gunn Was The Most Interesting Director In The MCU, and Now DC’s Got Him

It’s not a contentious viewpoint, in my opinion, that James Gunn was the most captivating director Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has seen so far. While it’s true that the Russo Brothers made significant contributions to the MCU with films like “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” it’s important to note that they didn’t have to mold relatively unknown characters, such as those from “The Guardians of the Galaxy,” into beloved figures in pop culture.

But James Gunn did it.

He transformed D-tier Marvel figures into top-notch sensations – an impressive accomplishment indeed! When Warner Bros. brought him on board, it was clear to me that they were embarking on a fresh, captivating path for their assets.

In essence, while it’s not entirely on James Gunn, he has become a pivotal figure for the DC Universe, much like Kevin Feige is for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The future triumphs and challenges largely rest on his shoulders.

I find James Gunn’s mind and viewpoint truly distinctive, and I’m really excited about the concepts his projects present. Admittedly, I’ve grown a bit skeptical about what Kevin Feige will bring to the table. Perhaps Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase 6 will change my perspective, and hopefully, the return of X-Men will reignite my enthusiasm for the MCU. For now, though, I’m all about James Gunn, all day long.

How about you?
