5 Star Trek Predictions for the Next Decade!

Since the debut of “Star Trek: Discovery” in 2017, there has been a revival of “Star Trek”, and I anticipate that within the next decade, we will see at least five new “Star Trek” projects. Following the launch of “Discovery”, Paramount+ released numerous new “Star Trek” series, but their production seems to have decelerated, with only two upcoming shows: “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” and “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy”. Both spin-offs of “Star Trek: Discovery” are set to run for at least two more seasons, but that’s not all we have to anticipate.

As a die-hard Star Trek enthusiast, I must admit that the latest iterations of this iconic franchise have made it incredibly inclusive and approachable for both seasoned fans and newcomers alike, regardless of their familiarity with the vast Star Trek universe. The long-awaited reunion with Captain Picard and his crew in Star Trek: Picard and the journey back to the 24th century in Star Trek: Lower Decks have left me thrilled beyond words!

For those who are relatively new to this cosmic odyssey, they now have a stepping stone in the captivating Star Trek: Prodigy. This stellar series serves as the ideal gateway for fresh explorers of the franchise. The future of Star Trek remains uncertain, but based on its rich history, we can confidently anticipate where it’s headed.

5. Star Trek 4

One More Voyage For Chris Pine And The Crew Of The Starship Enterprise

The strongest reason that Star Trek 4 is still possible lies in giving J.J. Abrams’ USS Enterprise crew a fitting conclusion, regardless of how long it’s been since Star Trek Beyond. After all, the contemporary era of Star Trek wouldn’t exist without J.J. Abrams’ 2009 adaptation of Star Trek, which sparked renewed excitement for the franchise and demonstrated that it could still thrive. By setting the new films in an alternate timeline, Abrams allowed the Prime Timeline to delve deeper into the multiverse of Star Trek.

The upcoming “Star Trek” movie within the Kelvin Timeline was initially revealed in 2015, a year prior to the release of “Star Trek Beyond”. Since then, the production of Star Trek 4 has been stuck in limbo, yet it hasn’t completely vanished from sight. Despite numerous changes in writers and directors, I’m hoping that the storyline of Star Trek 4 will wrap up the multiverse narratives presented in the streaming versions of “Star Trek”, although any tale that provides a fitting conclusion to the Kelvin Timeline would be satisfying.

4. A Star Trek: Voyager Reunion

In Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 Or A Star Trek: Voyager Movie

Following the highly anticipated reunion of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast in Star Trek: Picard, it appears that the cast from Star Trek: Voyager could be next to reunite. Remarkably, Kate Mulgrew has hinted at her potential return to the Star Trek universe, which could be in live-action as any new project would not overlap with her current role as multiple Janeways in Star Trek: Prodigy. Although a Star Trek: Janeway series might not be in the works, it’s significant that nearly every contemporary Star Trek character from the USS Voyager is currently accounted for—a promising sign indeed!

In an ideal scenario, instead of integrating a Voyager reunion into an existing Star Trek show like Starfleet Academy or Prodigy, it could be a self-contained event, providing fans with a dedicated opportunity to see their favorite Voyager characters reunite. For instance, Dr. Robert Picardo’s character from Voyager could appear in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy or Star Trek: Prodigy through flashbacks, but the main reunion event would be separate and focused on the cast of Voyager.

3. A Star Trek: Lower Decks Spinoff

Star Trek: Cerritos, Star Trek: Starbase 80, Or Both

It’s plausible that characters from “Star Trek: Lower Decks” may appear in another “Star Trek” production, as showrunner Mike McMahan hinted he isn’t finished with these characters after the series ended on Paramount+ following five seasons. The finale of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” suggested two possible new projects, which might include further escapades aboard the USS Cerritos or tales from Starbase 80’s strategic location at a multiversal gateway – or even a combination of both.

There are a few hints suggesting more episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks may be on the horizon. Similarly to Lower Decks, Star Trek: Discovery was abruptly ended after five seasons. However, characters from Discovery have continued their story in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. If Lower Decks follows suit by incorporating its characters into a new Star Trek series with a different title, it could also address the issue of their promotions. Additionally, this potential show could be the comedic Star Trek workplace setting that Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien have been planning.

2. A Better Star Trek Streaming Movie

Paramount+ Needs To Give Made-For-Streaming Star Trek Movies A Second Chance

Initially, I anticipated that Michelle Yeoh’s “Star Trek: Section 31” film on Paramount+ would pave the way for a novel streaming format for “Star Trek”. Regrettably, the reception for “Section 31” was universally poor, yet this doesn’t necessarily signal the demise of streaming “Star Trek” movies. In fact, the initial viewership numbers for “Section 31” were surprisingly strong, indicating that a well-crafted streaming “Star Trek” movie is indeed feasible—provided it is developed as a fully-fledged feature film from conception rather than being pieced together from a series outline.

A promising strategy for winning over fans and giving a new Star Trek movie on a streaming platform another shot following the disappointing performance of Section 31, would be to place it in the 24th (or early 25th century). This era has already captured our hearts after Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, the success or failure of a new movie depends on one crucial factor – Paramount+ delivering a more carefully planned and executed Star Trek streaming movie. Future films could then delve into various types of Star Trek narratives without the need for producing an entire series.

1. Star Trek: Legacy

Captain Seven Of Nine’s USS Enterprise-G Show Is A No-Brainer

It’s possible that Star Trek: Legacy is taking a while due to logistical reasons, as it involves coordinating schedules with showrunner Terry Matalas who is currently working on Marvel Studios’ VisionQuest, as well as the USS Enterprise-G crew members from Star Trek: Picard. Additionally, given the high costs associated with Star Trek productions, Legacy might be delayed until Strange New Worlds concludes and budget becomes available.

Given the enthusiasm from fans, it would be quite oversight for Paramount+ to overlook “Star Trek: Legacy”. Even if it seems improbable now, recall the situation of the “Star Trek” franchise a decade ago. In 2015, “Star Trek: Discovery” was announced as an exclusive streaming series on CBS All-Access, and streaming was still in its infancy. Many doubted if “Discovery” would even take off, let alone pave the way for numerous other “Star Trek” shows—and yet here we are. So who knows? The next ten years of “Star Trek” might hold equally unexpected developments.
