As a fashion enthusiast with a penchant for rebellion and a knack for finding beauty in chaos, I must say, the 5000 Spring/Summer 2025 “Mabuhay Gardens” showcase left me utterly captivated. Having lived through the punk era myself, albeit a few decades late, I found a refreshing nostalgia in Taylor Thompson’s homage to The Mab, that iconic San Francisco punk venue.
5000 people transported The Bay retailer to New York City for its Spring/Summer 2025 “Mabuhay Gardens” presentation, which took place at Lower Manhattan’s Marble Cemetery. Designer Taylor Thompson, nominated for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and based in Oakland, paid tribute to the legendary San Francisco punk venue with a collection bearing the same name. Known colloquially as “The Mab,” this club played a crucial role in nurturing relationships within the Punk and New Wave scenes and bridging the gap between disorder and imagination—aspects that Thompson skillfully captures in his new line.
Models sporting white umbrellas showcased the collection’s styles not on a conventional runway but by leisurely walking around the garden. Keeping focused gazes — intensified by bold eye makeup on many — the models engaged with each other and even spectators, one model pausing a viewer mid-stride to inquire about the origin of her head wrap.

Thompson’s creations were particularly reminiscent of The Mab’s “defiant attitude and vibrant zest,” showcasing designs that punk rock legends from The Dead Kennedys and Black Flag would undoubtedly wear with pride in 2024. This collection featured mini silver skirts, tailored suits adorned with prints, and bright fluorescent trousers.
5000, though technically a men’s clothing brand, consistently highlights that its apparel is designed to be inclusive, being worn by people of all genders in the vibrant display at their showcases.
