As a longtime fan of sports comedies, I must say that “Ted Lasso” has undeniably taken the cake. This Apple TV+ series is more than just a feel-good comedy; it’s a masterclass in life lessons served with a side of humor.
Ted Lasso is one of the top comedy series in recent memory, with its cheerful tone and touching storylines making it an ideal choice for a comforting TV experience suitable for all ages. Somehow, it manages to captivate viewers from different cultures as well, which might be due to the infectious spirit of the most enjoyable coach permeating beyond the television screens.
Rarely does a comedy TV series delve into profound storytelling that surpasses the typical humor found in most sitcom characters. Despite Ted being an eccentric character, he possesses depth and warmth, which resonates with viewers and makes the show exceptional for imparting valuable life lessons. While we anticipate updates about a potential fourth season, let’s explore some of these lessons instead.
6 Sometimes You’re Just Not Meant For Each Other
Rocky and Honest Relationships Are at the Center of the Show
Ted relocates to England due to an unforeseen offer to coach a soccer team, as he often confuses American football with regular football. As the season progresses, it becomes clear that Ted was also attempting to manage his separation from his partner. Yet, Ted’s isn’t the only relationship that appears to struggle.
Rebecca, the team’s leader, exhibits petty behavior upon divorcing her unpleasant husband, initially wishing ill for AFC Richmond. Even Roy Kent and Keeley Jones struggle to find their footing together despite the series eventually allowing their romance. It appears that Ted Lasso doesn’t always provide a cheerful romantic conclusion, but as long as friends and teammates stand by you, it can be acceptable. At least Coach Beard continues his odd yet functional relationship with Jane, making for an unusual but effective dynamic on the show.
5 Judging a Book by Its Cover Is Never OK
The Instant Reception to Ted’s Arrival Is Negative But It Changes Eventually
Ted’s clumsiness might not be an advantage, however, the strong opposition from the locals towards him is disproportionate. This guy is genuinely well-intentioned, aiming to give his best as a coach, yet he encounters resistance from Richmond residents. Although he may not know which ball is used in the Premier League, Lasso shows leadership and proves his value by transforming AFC Richmond into an underdog team that defies expectations, climbing up the league table.
Ted is an American, but more than that, he embodies American spirit to the fullest, complete with a thick accent and an enthusiasm reminiscent of a pack of playful puppies. His initial impression might not be favorable, and it seems that’s what Rebecca had in mind when she set out to hire the least capable soccer coach. However, she underestimated Ted, as his infectious spirit and teamwork strategies silenced all doubters in town. It’s crucial to refrain from making judgments without first engaging in a discussion, as you may end up being proven wrong and left looking foolish.
4 Good Players Are Often Made and Not Born
What Made AFC Richmond a Better Team Than They Were at First?
In the sports-themed series, Ted Lasso, there aren’t countless scenes of people consistently playing soccer. Instead, it focuses on the intricate team dynamics and character interactions. However, soccer remains a significant aspect of the show, with its strategies, player traits, and the game itself being integral to the storyline.
I’ve found that my role in fostering growth as a player isn’t so much about my coaching techniques, but rather my motivation. You see, I’m no soccer expert myself, so I leave the technical aspects to those who truly understand the game – Coach Beard, Nathan, and Roy Kent. By taking this open approach, I help AFC Richmond players realize their potential as more than just famous faces. They learn that by working together and following guidance, they can become better players, not just on the field, but as a team. I’m simply a passionate guide, striving to help others excel not only as soccer players, but as individuals working towards a common goal.
3 The Ability to Forgive Makes You a Better Person
Because Forgiving Nate Was a Huge Turning Point
As a cinema enthusiast, I must confess that while Ted Lasso isn’t short on characters, not all of them are paragons of virtue. The series primarily focuses on characters with flaws, but these flaws often serve as stepping stones towards redemption rather than defining traits. It’s challenging to find a truly unsavory character in the show’s universe, with the exception of Rebecca Welton’s ex-husband.
However, let’s consider Nate, the prodigious young talent from Season 3. He became the focus of everyone’s animosity and presented an intriguing challenge to the show’s idealistic ethos. Despite his actions warranting such disdain, it’s important to note that he wasn’t entirely blameless. Yet, surprisingly, Nate returns to AFC Richmond, receives forgiveness from the entire team, and even Ted, who was a victim of Nate’s thoughtless jealousy. Granted, everyone deserves another opportunity, but this decision seemed risky given his past actions.
2 “Believe” Is Not Just a Word That Looks Good on a Poster
In the End, It Was Just a Matter of Having Faith in Themselves
In the heartwarming series, Ted Lasso, it wasn’t just the football team that defied odds and triumphed; characters like Ted, Rebecca, and Keeley faced their own battles and ultimately grew as individuals. However, this transformation didn’t occur overnight, and it wasn’t solely through sheer effort. Instead, each character in Ted Lasso learned to believe in themselves, which proved to be the most powerful tool in their journey towards self-improvement.
Perhaps it was the “Believe” poster that Ted placed above the locker room door that served as a catalyst. When the team seemed devoid of motivation and their fans cheered out of cultural tradition rather than genuine support, this sign offered a glimmer of hope. To triumph, they needed to train diligently, of course. Yet, faith propelled them beyond what was expected, transforming them into a cohesive group that visualized themselves competing against the top team in the league. While training is crucial, self-belief serves as the only emotional energy source you need. Just take Dani Rojas’s words – “Football is life” – as proof of its impact on their progression up the table.
1 There Is No “I” in Team
There’s No Better Life Lesson Than Teamwork
Teamwork is a theme that’s stretched throughout the entire three-season Apple TV+ sports comedy. AFC Richmond is a good team not because of its coaches, or its players, but because of the heavenly mix of elements that made Ted Lasso a wonderfully compelling comedy. Everyone, from Keeley Jones to Leslie Higgins, worked together to accomplish Ted’s objective: He had to make the players believe they could actually score despite all the internal conflicts. After all, isn’t that what a good coach should always push for?
If you’re a sports enthusiast, whether you participate or simply support a particular team, you might understand the significance of effective teamwork. After all, as demonstrated by Ted Lasso, sometimes an unconventional approach can yield the best results, and success isn’t solely about scoring points. Instead, it’s also about finding satisfaction even in unfavorable situations.
