As I delve into this fascinating tale of cinematic resurrections and unexpected twists, I can’t help but marvel at the journey these characters have taken to finally find their place in the grand scheme of things.
2024’s highly anticipated film starring Deadpool and Wolverine truly lived up to expectations. In an intriguing decision, it became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thus integrating these characters from 21st Century Fox into the MCU. The movie raked in a staggering $1.26 billion globally, outperforming 2019’s Joker and securing the position as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made. With this, it also ranked as the second-highest-grossing movie of 2024, offering a significant triumph for Marvel Studios. And indeed, its success is well-earned.
Deadpool and Wolverine reprised their roles, with Ryan Reynolds returning as the quick-witted, joke-cracking Deadpool; while Hugh Jackman made his tenth appearance as Wolverine, donning the iconic yellow suit and mask – a sight that sent fans into a frenzy. The movie offers thrilling action sequences, a dose of nostalgia, and a fair share of explicit language and intense violence.
Additionally, there are numerous cameos featured in this movie. Some of them, such as Blake Lively portraying Lady Deadpool, we had anticipated based on fan speculation for months. However, the majority of these eight cameos in “Deadpool & Wolverine” took casual comic book fans by surprise – and they were fantastic!
8 Matthew McConaughey
Cowboypool
In this movie, something swift and understated happens that could easily go unnoticed unless you’re really focusing. Towards the film’s conclusion, a horde of Deadpool versions invade the main character’s realm. Among them is Cowboypool, a Wild West version, whose voice you’ll recognize as Matthew McConaughey’s, due to his distinctive Southern accent, if you pay close attention.
7 Aaron Stanford
Pyro
In the original X-Men trilogy, Pyro serves as a secondary antagonist. He’s a mutant who can control fire but is unable to create it himself. Although Alexander Burton played him in X-Men from 2000, it’s Aaron Stanford’s portrayal of Pyro in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand that fans recall most fondly. Stanford once again took on the villainous role in Deadpool & Wolverine.
In a realm beyond time known as the Void, Deadpool crosses paths with characters destined to fade away, including Pyro and Stanford. However, they get another chance in the film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” offering a surprising yet heartwarming throwback for fans who grew up watching the original “X-Men” trilogy.
6 Jon Favreau
Happy Hogan
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for Happy Hogan, a character who has become an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Interestingly enough, the man behind the character, Jon Favreau, has also carved out a significant role in Disney’s world. From launching the MCU with his portrayal of Happy in the 2008 blockbuster Iron Man, to masterminding the highly successful Star Wars series on Disney+, The Mandalorian, Favreau has proven himself to be a valued collaborator for Disney.
Pleased to announce that the Head of Security at Stark Industries is none other than one of Tony Stark’s closest companions. This esteemed individual has graced our screens in numerous films throughout the years, making an appearance in every single Iron Man and Spider-Man movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recently, he’s expanded his repertoire to include roles in Deadpool and Wolverine productions as well.
In the movie’s opening scene, there’s a humorous encounter between Happy and Deadpool, where they discuss his slim chances of joining the Avengers at that moment – it was practically impossible. Given that Deadpool is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has proven to be a box office hit, one can wonder if we might see him teaming up with the Avengers in the future. Only time will reveal the answer to that question.
5 Henry Cavill
The Cavillrine
Henry Cavill is well-recognized for appearing in another popular comic book film franchise, jokingly called “the neighbors” by Deadpool. Cavill gained prominence portraying Superman within the DC Extended Universe, but his role was terminated along with the rest of the DCEU when James Gunn assumed control. A fresh start for DC is on the horizon, starting with a new incarnation of Superman, scheduled for release around 2025.
Speculation has been swirling that Henry Cavill, who recently lost his role as Geralt of Rivia on Netflix’s The Witcher, might join Marvel and play Wolverine. However, those whispers were put to rest when it was confirmed that Jackman would once again embody the character. Fans were taken aback at the prospect of Cavill making an appearance in the film as a different version of Wolverine. Many fans’ sentiments were echoed by Deadpool himself:
Wow! It seems the tales about the Cavilerine were indeed accurate. And might I add, from the perspective of all humankind, it truly feels… fitting.
Indeed, he embodied the character flawlessly. From his hair and physique to his rough demeanor, it was as if Wolverine himself had stepped onto the scene. Could we possibly witness Cavill reprising his role as this formidable hero in the future? Let’s hope for more appearances of this portrayal at some point in time.
4 Jennifer Garner
Elektra
One of Jennifer Garner’s most recognized characters is Elektra, the blade-wielding assassin, whom she portrayed in the poorly received 2003 film Daredevil and its financially unsuccessful sequel, Elektra. Many thought they’d never see this character again (and likely didn’t want to, considering how poorly those movies were reviewed). However, Garner reappears in an epic, slow-motion scene in Deadpool & Wolverine, accompanied by some other unexpected figures from our list.
Similar to Pyro, Elektra has been residing in a desolate realm and gets one final chance in the film “Deadpool & Wolverine”. It’s likely that Matt Murdock (played by Ben Affleck as Daredevil) is also dwelling in this void somewhere, but he doesn’t make an appearance in the movie.
3 Wesley Snipes
Blade
Way back before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was born and long before we saw Hugh Jackman as Wolverine or Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, there was Wesley Snipes playing the role of Blade. This was as early as 1998, and he continued to portray the character in three movies centered around him. Interestingly, Blade is a character from Marvel Comics, which many people tend to overlook.
Ryan Reynolds himself stated, “Blade paved the way for both the Fox Marvel Universe and MCU, earning him the title ‘Marvel Father.’ He’s hoping for a farewell like Logan for the character.” However, this may not happen as Marvel Studios has announced a reboot of Blade starring Mahershala Ali. Instead, it seems that the unexpected appearance of Blade/Snipes in Deadpool and Wolverine might be the ‘Logan-like’ sendoff that Reynolds was referring to.
2 Channing Tatum
Gambit
With the exception of Cowboypool, all the characters on this list have been seen in previous Marvel-based films. However, unlike them, Gambit is a new addition – though not entirely fresh as he has been a well-liked X-Men character. Despite being absent from many X-Men movies, Gambit made his appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch. However, the film’s reception was less than ideal, which somewhat overshadowed Gambit’s debut.
21st Century Fox announced plans to create a standalone Gambit movie, starring Channing Tatum in the title role, which was initially scheduled for release in 2009. However, the project became mired in development issues and was eventually scrapped following Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox.
After a span of fifteen years, it was Tatum’s turn to embody Gambit in the movie “Deadpool and Wolverine.” In this film, Gambit was depicted roaming the Void, and Tatum delivered an outstanding performance by emphasizing the character’s Cajun accent for humor. A cut scene indicates that Gambit managed to survive the events of “Deadpool and Wolverine,” implying a possible continuation of his storyline within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
1 Chris Evans
The Human Torch
In the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine”, Chris Evans appeared and left fans surprised, as they initially believed he was playing Captain America. However, the film took an unexpected turn when it was revealed that Evans wasn’t portraying Captain America at all. Instead, he was introducing his first Marvel character – the Human Torch from the original “Fantastic Four” films. And let me tell you, things don’t end too favorably for him.
