8 Years of Pink: Taapsee Pannu calls milestone ‘bitter-sweet emotion’ as she talks about struggles of women's security in India

As a woman who has grown up in India, I can attest to the profound impact that the film Pink has had on our society. Eight years ago, when this movie was released, it felt like a breath of fresh air, shedding light on an issue that was often shrouded in silence – consent and women’s rights.

8 years ago, on September 16th, the thought-provoking movie Pink, directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury and starring Amitabh Bachchan, was released. The film, which dealt with the crucial topic of consent, was remarkably ahead of its time and sparked significant discussions on the issue. Today, Taapsee Pannu, one of the actresses in the movie, has shared a poignant sentiment about this anniversary.

Taapsee, portraying Minal Arora in Pink, expressed in a statement, “Eight years ago, we never imagined that our small movie would occupy such a significant space among the prominent films of our nation. And now, eight years later, it’s hard to believe that we’re still engaged in the fight for women’s safety and their right to consent. It’s a bittersweet feeling for someone like me who takes pride in being associated with this film.

In a 50-day stint at theaters, the film “Pink” became an unexpected box office hit, garnering both financial and critical acclaim that was truly inspiring. Apart from Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu, this legal thriller also featured Kirti Kulhari, Andrea Tariang, Angad Bed, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Piyush Mishra, Vijay Varma, and Tushar Pandey in significant roles. Today, “Pink” is widely recognized as one of the finest films addressing consent issues and women’s rights.

The film centers on three young women, Minal (Taapsee), Falak (Kirti), and Andrea (Andrea). They find themselves in legal trouble when they are charged with attempted murder for defending themselves against a band of harassing men. Amitabh Bachchan portrays Deepak Sehgal, a former attorney struggling with bipolar disorder, who decides to defend them after Minal is wrongfully accused.

His dialogue ‘no means no’ from the film became a social revolution in India. At the 64th National Film Awards, Pink was awarded the Best Film on Other Social Issues. Written by Shoojit Sircar, Ritesh Shah, and Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury under the production of Rising Sun Film, Pink was remade in Tamil as Nerkonda Paarvai (2019) and in Telugu as Vakeel Saab (2021).

Looking back today, I can confidently say that the movie Pink was truly visionary in its themes. If only society had listened earlier, it could have made a significant impact then. But fear not, if you missed out before, Pink is now available to stream for FREE on YouTube and Disney+ Hotstar. Don’t delay any longer; watch it now if you haven’t already!
