9-1-1: Lone Star EP Breaks Down Owen And Marjan's Emotional Moment That You Might Have Missed And The Iconic TV Scene That Inspired It

As a dedicated fan of 9-1-1: Lone Star for the past four seasons, I must say that the Season 5 premiere was nothing short of spectacular. The trainwreck scene was an exhilarating rollercoaster ride that had me on the edge of my seat, and the cliffhanger with Owen’s lieutenant choice left me eagerly anticipating the next episode.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 3 of 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5 on Fox.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement over the explosive premiere of “9-1-1: Lone Star” in the 2024 TV lineup. The episode kicked off with a heart-stopping train derailment, adding to the intensity as our brave team at Station 126 also grappled with a lethal chlorine gas cloud that shifted direction, putting various groups in danger. Fortunately, despite some nail-biting moments and Marjan’s harrowing injury, all our heroes managed to emerge from the train wreck unscathed. The episode concluded with Owen making a significant decision about his lieutenant position, followed by a poignant and subtle scene between him and Marjan that Rashad Raisani, the show’s executive producer, compared to a legendary TV moment in an interview with TopMob.

In the moments before Owen was about to reveal his selection for the next lieutenant among the 126 crew members, Marjan intervened to withdraw her name from contention. This allowed Paul to secure the position, following his brave act of saving a life that Marjan had unintentionally overlooked. It was a selfless and touching gesture, sparing Owen from the need to disclose his choice. During the ensuing celebration for Paul and Judd’s amusement as the new probie after his experience without Grace, Owen briefly stepped aside to whisper something in Marjan’s ear. This swift exchange may have gone unnoticed by some viewers amidst the jubilation and Judd’s laughter.

Was there a particular instance that left such an impression on me that I felt compelled to inquire about it from the executive producer? In other words, will we uncover the truth behind what Owen whispered to Marjan when she chose to back Paul for lieutenant? Here’s what Rashad Raisani revealed:

We won’t, because I feel like it’s there. I think about two great moments from film and television history that had a tremendous impact on me. That was the end of Lost in Translation, when Bill Murray whispers into Scarlett Johansson’s ear, and and then a similar moment that had an equal and maybe even stronger impact on me. Funnily enough, it’s from The Office, when Steve Carell left the show and Pam catches [Michael] at the airport, and they both take off their mics, and he whispers the final thing to her, which still chokes me up, just thinking about it.

In “Lost in Translation,” Bill Murray’s character shares a poignant moment with Scarlett Johansson’s character. He whispers something into her ear before walking away, marking the end of their journey together. This movie is often praised for its emotional depth and ranks among TopMob’s top movies from the 2000s. Interestingly, a similar heartfelt scene can be found in “9-1-1: Lone Star,” between Owen and Marjan, while the scene between Jim and Pam in “The Office” might also resonate with it.

As Michael was preparing to depart Scranton due to Steve Carrell’s exit from the show, The Office heightened the emotional impact by having Pam dash after him to the airport for a heartfelt hug and farewell conversation. Although Jenna Fischer divulged some of her dialogue with Carrell, the cherished sitcom never disclosed what Pam said to Michael in their final moments together.

That will be the case with Owen and Marjan on 9-1-1: Lone Star, according to the EP, who went on:

From what I gather, you believe you understand Owen’s words, but you didn’t share those specific lines with the actors involved. You had confidence in their abilities to deliver a memorable performance and chose not to provide them with the script. It seems your faith was rewarded, as you feel they did an excellent job. Furthermore, you have a clear vision of what Owen might have said, and you find it fascinating that we may never know the exact words, as it adds a layer of mystery and beauty to the scene. You’re captivated by the actress’s gesture, which you believe was the focus of Owen’s admiration.

Without Rob Lowe or Natacha Karam revealing what Owen told Marjan, the secret remains a mystery. Yet, it doesn’t diminish the intrigue. Instead, the more pressing questions revolve around the kind of lieutenant Paul will become and how Judd will fare under his leadership. If you want to catch up on the events leading to Paul’s promotion, don’t forget that the first three episodes of Season 5 are available for viewing through a Hulu subscription. Here’s a sneak peek at the next episode:

Keep tuning in to Fox on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET for new episodes of 9-1-1: Lone Star. The co-showrunner also recently opened up about knowing the “writing was on the wall” for Lone Star getting cancelled, but at least there’s still more than half of the fifth and final season left.
