As a long-time fan of 9-1-1, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension as we approach the show’s return. Buck’s character has always been one that resonates with me, his complex past and the struggles he faces in the present making him relatable in ways that few other characters manage.
Spoilers ahead for the 9-1-1 fall finale, “Wannabes.”
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, the nail-biting finale of 9-1-1 left me hanging! The cliffhangers have got me buzzing with anticipation for the new year. One of the major mysteries revolves around Buck potentially leaving, an event that could shake things up significantly in his future storyline. Showrunner Tim Minear recently shed some light on what we can expect when 9-1-1 returns next year on the 2025 TV schedule.
In the story “Wannabes,” Eddie attempted to persuade Christopher to return home by offering an autograph from Brad, a star from the TV show “Hotshots.” However, instead of accepting, Christopher inquired about how the autograph would be delivered. Later on, he was checking out houses in El Paso to live near his son, and Buck discovered this just before a virtual appointment with a realtor. Immediately showing empathy, Buck offered to assist Christopher in finding a new place, despite the possibility of losing his closest friend.
While outwardly everything appears tranquil, Minear informed TVLine that there’s a lot of turmoil happening behind the scenes.
It seems like Eddie has fire alarms blaring inside his mind, and it shows on Oliver’s face as well. This intense reaction will play a significant role in our upcoming scenes.
Buck is experiencing numerous transformations, and instead of merely focusing on distracting himself from Tommy, he now has the additional burden of bidding farewell to his closest companion. Although Eddie departed from the 118 a few seasons ago, primarily to invest more time with Christopher, Buck had the chance to socialize with him and provide support. However, with his relocation to another state, Buck is likely to feel quite isolated.
Buck’s bond with Eddie and Christopher holds significant value for him, and their absence will be challenging. Moreover, he has mentioned earlier in the series about feeling abandoned by people like his parents, Abby, and now Tommy. This sense of loss may linger heavily on his mind, as suggested by the showrunner.
If Eddie contemplates moving and potentially disrupting my life, I’ve had lingering feelings of abandonment for quite some time now, making this change particularly challenging for me. It’s not a matter of if it will affect me, but rather how I’ll navigate through it.
After spending a good deal of time baking as a means to distract himself from Tommy, it’s clear that Buck might switch to something new once Eddie departs. However, with the significant losses of two crucial men in his life, Buck is finding it challenging to maintain his sanity. The question arises: Can Buck re-enter the dating scene and move forward?
Tim Minear shared the odds of that happening, and it sounds pretty good:
I would think so. I’m working out the back 10 now, and we’re hitting the ground running. We’ve got two episodes shot already, which are just going to be bananas. The idea is always to move every character’s story down the field a little bit.
Every time 9-1-1 comes back in the new year, it’s bound to be filled with unexpected twists and turns, which is something we can definitely look forward to. However, it seems that Buck will be facing some challenges this time around, but considering his past experiences, this isn’t exactly a surprise. What might be different is that he’ll be navigating these difficulties without his longtime partner by his side.
It’s uncertain what lies ahead when 9-1-1 comes back on March 6, but without a doubt, the wait will prove rewarding. In the interim, those with a Hulu subscription can binge-watch all eight seasons and get up to speed before the series resumes in 2025.
