9-1-1's Plane Crisis Somehow Got Even Worse For Athena, And I Can't Stop Rewatching Bobby's Reaction

As a long-time 9-1-1 enthusiast with years of emotional investment in the lives of its characters, I must say that the latest episode was nothing short of gripping. The mid-air crisis involving Athena has undoubtedly proven to be one of the most intense and nerve-wracking storylines yet.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 2 of 9-1-1 Season 8, called “When the Boeing Gets Tough…”

In the autumn TV lineup of 2024, the eighth season of 9-1-1 started off with an extraordinary emergency event, just as it usually does. Interestingly enough, this year’s premiere had a bit of a surprise twist – while ABC promoted a massive bee storm (bee-nado) as the primary threat of the early Season 8, what actually happened was a small plane colliding with another passenger plane due to the bees causing a loss of control. If you want to watch the first episode again, you can do so with a Hulu subscription. The main crisis unfolds in Episode 2 and beyond, as character Athena finds herself in a mid-air plane crash, bravely dealing with one blow after another.

At the point where things appeared to be improving, an unexpected turn made matters all the more dire. Although her situation isn’t something to laugh about, I found myself chuckling at Bobby‘s response, leading me to replay and rewatch it several times.

What Happened To Athena

Despite surviving the first impact, the passengers faced numerous problems. Unfortunately, the pilots didn’t make it through unscathed; one was pulled out of the cockpit, while the other was severely injured, leaving the responsibility of flying the aircraft to Athena and a young boy.

Following seven seasons and a harrowing incident reminiscent of a cruise ship crisis, Athena stepped up to the challenge and performed admirably under the circumstances, managing to keep the aircraft airborne with guidance from phone consultants. However, everyone breathed a sigh of relief when the copilot regained consciousness and was prepared to resume control of the plane.

Subsequently, the copilot started experiencing a heart attack. In what appeared to be a fortunate turn of events for all passengers, it seemed they might all make it safe and sound. However, their chances of survival took a significant blow when the copilot’s condition worsened, potentially leaving them with limited options unless he recovers swiftly in the upcoming episode. Furthermore, there is the pressing matter of Dennis Jenkins, should they manage to land safely, that needs attention on the ground.

What Happened On The Ground

In the face of Boeing’s challenges, it was swiftly clarified that Buck had not perished while trying to aid or assault Captain Gerrard. Instead, the captain was transported to the hospital due to a potential head injury, and Hen took over as acting captain. The festivities at the 118 were short-lived, however, when news arrived that Athena was endeavoring to guide a damaged aircraft carrying wounded passengers.

As a gamer putting myself into this situation, I couldn’t be found, but 911 began offering phone triage to assist the passengers in helping each other. When it appeared that the plane was about to crash one way or another, 911 was dispatched to help (along with a significant part of the LAFD). Buck had grown tired of not being able to contact me and decided to rush to the TV set to personally inform me about what was unfolding regarding my wife.

Without any need for words, Bobby was instantly suspicious that Athena might be connected to the emergency when he heard about the unusual plane incident with a passenger at the helm and received a voicemail saying “I love you,” which only added to his concerns. When Buck showed up, Bobby didn’t mince words, exclaiming, “You’ve got to be kidding me!” Then, the following conversation ensued:

  • Bobby: “Athena’s on the flight, isn’t she?”
  • Buck: “She’s flying it.”
  • Bobby: “Of course she is. What else would she be doing?

Bobby Nash has now fully grasped the conventions of his genre, having completed seven full seasons and more! His response seemed to echo how gleefully absurd the show 9-1-1 can be at times, in a delightfully entertaining manner. The scene then unfolded with Bobby choosing to speed through traffic using the fire truck instead of Buck’s car. To add to the excitement, Brad, the actor, joined him in the back seat. Without missing a beat, Bobby nonchalantly started the engine and proceeded with his unconventional escape.

In a more casual tone: On any other show, that scene would have been wild and out of place, but on 9-1-1, it was just a quirky prelude to the next episode. It added some levity which was needed considering Athena’s intense storyline. I must confess, I’ve even rewatched Bobby trying to come up with the most intricate theories about his wife’s situation – the 9-1-1 version of keeping it simple!

Isn’t it understandable that Bobby finds himself in such a predicament? His honeymoon cruise, intended as a peaceful getaway, turned out to be a series of unfortunate events barely a year ago. To quote him directly, “of course” this is the worst-case scenario. Thankfully, Athena has shown her ability to manage even the most challenging situations, so I’m more eager for the resolution of this airplane crisis (and the Dennis Jenkins matter) than I am concerned about her wellbeing.

Catch a glimpse of what awaits Athena and Bobby in the upcoming episodes of 9-1-1, airing Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. This will be followed by Doctor Odyssey at 9 p.m. ET and Grey’s Anatomy at 10 p.m. ET. Notably, co-creator Ryan Murphy is also working on another spinoff for ABC, which brings to mind the recent cancellation of the Fox spinoff as mentioned by 9-1-1: Lone Star co-showrunner Rashad Raisani.
