Regardless if you feel that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued to shine or is going through a rough patch, it’s undeniable that it stands atop the blockbuster movie-making realm. The unique structure of this interconnected series means events in one film frequently affect those in future projects, and part of the delight in watching these movies is sharing the experience with a packed audience, discovering unexpected appearances or critical plot twists for the first time.
In essence, leaks continue to pose a significant problem for Marvel Studios. Although they are widely followed, many fans dislike leaks as they ruin surprises that would have been more exciting to discover when portrayed on-screen initially. For instance, the fact that Sentry was going to feature in “Thunderbolts*” was leaked years before any trailer hinted at his involvement.
Not everything you find online should be taken at face value when it comes to Marvel news. Although there have been numerous authentic Marvel leaks throughout the years, an equal number of false rumors have also emerged, which sadly never made it onto the big screen. Some of these dubious sources are questionable, while others originate directly from Marvel Studios itself. Indeed, Marvel has become adept at manipulating leaks to create a flood of misinformation, making it challenging for even dedicated fans to predict the next film’s events accurately. Here are some standout examples of Marvel leaks that, unfortunately, turned out to be too fantastical to come true.
Deadpool & Wolverine intentionally planted fake cameo leaks
In the realm of the Multiverse, Marvel enthusiasts have learned to anticipate numerous surprise appearances. This storytelling tool offers an opportunity for Marvel to reintroduce actors who haven’t portrayed heroes in a while, with no complications since they hail from a different reality than the primary Marvel narrative. These cameos are like a dream come true for fans, but Marvel tries to keep most of them under wraps, although this isn’t always successful. Despite the fact that we knew “Deadpool & Wolverine” would bring together several heroes, Marvel successfully misled fans by spreading false rumors about who was actually in the movie, making us question who the real characters were.
Wendy Jacobson, a producer for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” revealed why some of the anticipated cameos didn’t materialize, stating, “There might have been some deception and misleading information circulating online or in person to preserve the confidentiality.” Despite persistent speculation, many believed that several former X-Men actors, such as Halle Berry (Storm), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Famke Janssen (Jean Grey), would play roles, and fans were certain that Taylor Swift was set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe by portraying Dazzler.
It can be challenging to distinguish which Marvel-related rumors were confirmed by the studio and which ones were speculative, but collectively they helped keep secret the unexpected cameos we saw. For instance, Wesley Snipes returned as Blade, and Chris Evans made an appearance as Johnny Storm (not Captain America). As for the previously mentioned X-Actors, eager fans will have to wait until “Avengers: Doomsday” to witness these familiar X-Men characters entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Avengers: Doomsday concept art is a dupe
Despite Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) acknowledging a dip in the MCU currently, Marvel Studios is hopeful that “Avengers: Doomsday” will revive its fortunes. The production process has had some twists and turns, as initially it was called “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” However, the departure of Kang actor Jonathan Majors due to legal issues necessitated changes, leading to Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., stepping in. While this swap required a title modification, fans are excited about the prospect of seeing the Avengers united once more. This enthusiasm was amplified when high-quality, potentially spoiler-filled “Doomsday” concept art surfaced online, stirring excitement among viewers.
One illustration highlights Doctor Doom’s imposing presence, as Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) is shackled, with Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) appearing nearby, seemingly serving as Doom’s spouse. It appears Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) might be holding Reed’s chains, hinting at a universe where she lives on. Other sketches were more light-hearted, depicting Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) relaxing on a couch with White Vision (Paul Bettany), and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) in a medieval setting, accompanied by other large characters. This artwork upset fans as it seemed to reveal upcoming universe and storyline details from the movie prematurely.
Thankfully, Marvel enthusiasts can relax, as the Russos Brothers, responsible for directing the upcoming “Avengers” films, have confirmed that the leaked artwork was not from either “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Secret Wars”. The brothers also assured us that there are no spoilers in the artwork and it doesn’t represent their concept art. Therefore, it seems that the secrets of “Avengers: Doomsday” remain intact, including the suspense about which Marvel characters may not survive until its conclusion.
Mephisto never materialized on WandaVision
The first original Marvel series on Disney+, “WandaVision”, left fans guessing week after week about the strange happenings in Westview. Many tuned in hoping to catch a glimpse of Marvel antagonist Mephisto, who was heavily speculated to appear. Known as a demon ruler of Hell with the power to manipulate reality, Mephisto’s magical abilities seemed perfect for Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) as she developed her character as the Scarlet Witch. Despite numerous hints each week that suggested Mephisto was the main villain, he never made an appearance. Intriguingly, “WandaVision” director Matt Shakman later revealed that Mephisto had not been included in any versions of the show’s script drafts!
As it turned out, the news about Mephisto appearing in “WandaVision” was untrue. People got so caught up believing he would be in the show because, during its early 2021 run, there was a leak of a Diamond Select Toys Minimate box that displayed an image of Mephisto. However, it was later revealed that this toy image was fabricated and not officially released by the company.
It turned out that the theories surrounding the villains in “WandaVision” were amusing, but ultimately it was Agatha Harkness (played by Kathryn Hahn) who was pulling the strings. Although this theory was later proven false, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have continued to keep a close eye, waiting for the arrival of Mephisto. Essentially, whenever a Marvel movie or show mentions Hell or the devil, viewers are convinced that Mephisto can’t be far off.
Tom Cruise doesn’t enter the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Just like fans eagerly anticipated diverse cameos when “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” released in 2022, similar to the excitement surrounding Deadpool and Wolverine, there were high hopes for unexpected appearances. One much-discussed rumor suggested that Tom Cruise might make his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut as an Iron Man variant, with some speculating he could embody Obadiah Stane from the original “Iron Man” movie instead. This potential appearance would have been a delightful surprise for fans, especially considering Cruise was in contention for the role of Iron Man before Robert Downey Jr. secured it. However, due to budget constraints prior to 2008, Cruise was deemed too costly; yet, a cameo as Superior Iron Man could have been feasible for the film legend.
In the movie, Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) encounters several characters in the Illuminati sequence, including Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), Mr. Fantastic (John Krasinski), and Professor X (Patrick Stewart). However, there’s no Iron Man character, nor is there Tom Cruise. Interestingly, it was revealed that Cruise as Tony Stark was never actually planned to be in the movie. The writer of “Multiverse of Madness,” Michael Waldron, had discussed the possibility of having Tom Cruise play Iron Man with Kevin Feige, but it seems like this idea didn’t progress beyond their conversation and no filming with Cruise ever took place.
Tom Cruise hasn’t definitely ruled out the possibility of appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe someday. When discussing potential involvement in a superhero production, whether from Marvel or DC, he expressed openness, stating “I don’t dismiss anything. It’s about the story, the character, and my interest.” Perhaps all it takes is the right project to present itself, one that offers the opportunity for exhilarating practical stunts…
No Silver Surfer in Avengers: Infinity War
It’s been eagerly awaited for some time, but the fan-favorite character Silver Surfer is finally making his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut, set to appear as Shalla-Bal, portrayed by Julia Garner, in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” However, there were rumors that the interstellar hero would show up much earlier, even appearing in “Avengers: Infinity War.” It seems these rumors may have originated from Silver Surfer’s significant role in the “Infinity Gauntlet” comic series. Unfortunately, given that there was no way this could have transpired, such speculation didn’t stand a chance of being true.
Prior to the release of the movie, the Russo Brothers clarified that at that time, the rights for characters like the Silver Surfer and others associated with the Fantastic Four were held by 20th Century Fox. Joe Russo stated, “I don’t believe we own Silver Surfer.” However, he added that if the Disney-Fox deal went through, there would be more characters joining the Marvel universe, possibly making some of the fans’ wildest theories a reality. The movie “Infinity War” was released in 2018, while the Disney-Fox merger was finalized in 2019. This meant that Marvel Studios were legally prohibited from including Silver Surfer in the film, even if they wished to.
Despite the rumors spreading beyond bounds, some fans believed actor Curt Clendenin had been chosen for the character role. Long after the movie premiered, he confessed to Comic Book Movie, “I must preserve a certain mystery. I can’t think of another way to express it, but only time, in theory, will reveal the truth.” It’s speculated that he might be fueling the excitement, but perhaps the Russos anticipated the merger would happen earlier than it actually did.
Fans were denied their Hulk vs. Thanos rematch
Spectators witnessed Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) immense power at the onset of “Avengers: Infinity War,” as he dealt Hulk a crushing blow, one that marked the conclusion of all confrontations. So intimidated was Hulk by this encounter, he declined to transform for the remainder of the movie. This unusual behavior led some viewers to anticipate that Hulk would reappear in his victorious form in “Avengers: Endgame.
It’s important to note that there were tangible signs suggesting this event might happen. For instance, a Funko set featuring “Avengers: Endgame” included Hulk and Thanos in a pair, implying Marvel was hinting at another confrontation between the two. Regrettably, this didn’t materialize as expected.
Despite not occurring in the film, it seems Marvel contemplated a Hulk versus Thanos rematch, but ultimately couldn’t find a way to incorporate it into the intricate narrative of “Avengers: Endgame.” As Stephen McFeely, one of the co-writers, explained to Backstory Magazine (through ComicBook.com), “Many were eager for their rematch, but that wouldn’t have made sense given he transformed into Smart Hulk. He’s a different character now, and it’s not his desire to confront Thanos.” With the abundance of events in “Endgame” already, the omission feels like a missed opportunity and something that could have further fueled audience excitement.
Fans thought Hela would make a good replacement for Death in Avengers: Infinity War
As a hardcore Marvel fan, I couldn’t help but notice the intriguing setup in “Thor: Ragnarok” that seemed to hint at a significant plot point for “Avengers: Infinity War.” Many of us believed Hela, the antagonist from “Ragnarok,” might take on Death’s role in the grand scheme of things. Although Hela was defeated in the film, there were whispers of a leaked plot suggesting she would step into Death’s shoes for “Infinity War.” In the comics, Thanos eliminates half of existence to win Death’s favor. It was thought that introducing Death, played by Aubrey Plaza, to the MCU in a major blockbuster like “Infinity War” might have been too bizarre for general audiences. Instead, it seemed like Hela could serve as an excellent substitute as someone Thanos would aim to impress.
As a dedicated gamer, I must admit that the rumors surrounding Marvel Studios projects always seem to swirl around like unpredictable boss battles. Back in 2016, Kevin Feige, the big boss, hinted at these rumors during an interview with Vulture. He said, “Anything is possible,” which, as a comic book fan, I know can be both exciting and confusing. As the guy calling the shots, it’s understandable that Feige would use such enigmatic statements to keep us guessing until the final curtain drops on a project. It’s like he’s the game designer, and we’re all just trying to unravel his intricate plotlines!
One aspect of Thanos’ character that wasn’t portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is his romantic feelings towards Death. Instead, his desire in the storyline is to eliminate half of all life in the universe to prevent resource depletion and further suffering. It’s possible that the notion of Hela being a stand-in for Death may have confused some viewers about Thanos’ true intentions before the movie was released.
Kirsten Dunst was open to fulfilling Spider-Man: No Way Home rumors
As the eagerly anticipated release of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” drew near in December 2021, it was a given among gamers like myself that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would step back into their Spidey suits for this multiverse adventure. Despite Garfield’s persistent denials during the build-up to the sequel, we all sensed what was coming, especially when it was confirmed that a host of their arch-nemeses, including Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx’s Electro, were making a comeback. Naturally, this left many speculating whether Kirsten Dunst would reappear as Mary Jane Watson from Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” trilogy.
Despite Kirsten Dunst denying any involvement in the film prior to its release, many didn’t believe her claims. However, when the movie was premiered, it turned out that she truly wasn’t part of it. It seems that the reason for the absence of Dunst’s MJ character in “No Way Home” is quite straightforward – nobody asked her to be a part of the film. This isn’t because she lacked interest, as she expressed her desire to join the multiverse during an interview with Backstage, stating, “I’d jump at the chance to be a part of that universe! It feels like I’m the only one who hasn’t joined yet. I’m like, ‘Please let me in. Put me on the team.’ I need to pay for my house and kids.” Though her motivation may primarily be financial, Dunst appears eager for more “Spider-Man” in her career, so there’s a possibility that she might get another chance to play MJ before Marvel’s Multiverse Saga comes to an end.
Spider-Man: Homecoming didn’t take place in the Savage Land
It’s worth noting that one of the most unexpected leaks about the MCU was the revelation that Spider-Man would become a part of the franchise. He made his debut in “Captain America: Civil War,” and later starred in his own series starting with “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” The peculiar aspect is that fans anticipated Peter Parker’s solo adventure to take place in the Savage Land, a comic book location hidden in Antarctica where dinosaurs live. This concept seemed incredibly far-fetched, especially for a movie intended to introduce Spider-Man to the Marvel Universe. However, as it turned out, Spiderman stayed within the New York City area throughout “Homecoming.
It’s plausible that the rumor originated from a plot concept in Drew Goddard’s proposed “Sinister Six” movie, which was intended as a spin-off of the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man films. In the book “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios,” there’s a brief mention of an intriguing detail from Goddard’s script, suggesting that by the end of 2014, he had a draft featuring Spider-Man and his villains in the Savage Land, where Spider-Man would ride a T-Rex.
The initial concept for a “Sinister Six” film was abandoned, and instead, Spider-Man became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), rather than embarking on solo adventures in a separate universe. While some fans might have assumed elements from the “Sinister Six” script would appear in “Homecoming,” it turned out to be an entirely new tale – one devoid of any dinosaur scenes.
