As a long-term crypto investor who has closely followed the developments in the industry, I’m keeping a close eye on the upcoming sentencing of Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, the founder and former CEO of Binance. The potential prison sentence looming over him has created quite a stir in the community, with some wagerers on Polymarket anticipating his departure much sooner than what the Department of Justice (DOJ) is recommending.
CZ Zhao, the founder of Binance and its former CEO, is set to be sentenced on Tuesday in a Seattle courtroom in the United States. The DoJ has proposed a three-year prison term for him in their recent sentencing memo due to the gravity of his offenses.
Based on betting market predictions, it is expected that his departure will occur earlier than anticipated. The probabilities suggest a 17% chance that he will leave within the next 6-11 months, while there is a 19% likelihood that he will depart between 12-17 months.
In total, the probabilities indicate that there’s a 96% likelihood he will be released from jail within the next two years, while it’s unlikely, at roughly a 2% chance, that he will receive a thirty-to-thirty-five month sentence – approximately what the federal authorities are proposing.
Traders can use letters of support to convince the judge to significantly decrease the proposed penalty from the DOJ’s recommendation.
Max S. Baucus, the former American ambassador to China, scholars from Columbia and McGill Universities, Sean Yang, the managing director at Morgan Stanley, and members of the UAE’s royal family are some of the notable individuals who have put their signatures on letters that were presented in court.
In his letter, CZ acknowledged that he had not set up the required regulatory controls at Binance. However, he assured that this incident would mark his first interaction with the legal system dealing with criminal charges.
