As a seasoned crypto investor with a strong libertarian lean, I’m thrilled to hear Donald Trump’s announcement about potentially pardoning Ross Ulbricht if he gets re-elected. Ulbricht’s story is a classic example of an individual seeking freedom and innovation within the digital realm, despite the legal consequences.
At the Libertarian Party’s convention in Washington D.C. on May 25th, ex-US President Donald Trump pledged to grant clemency to Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road darknet market, should he secure victory in the November elections. Trump made this promise during his speech.
The infamous Silk Road marketplace, famed for trading unlawful goods such as illicit drugs, was established by Ross Ulbricht in the year 2011. Subsequently, it was taken over by the FBI in 2013. In the trial that followed in 2015, Ulbricht was handed down two consecutive life sentences, coupled with an additional 40-year term.
As a researcher examining Trump’s connection with the Libertarian Party and the cryptocurrency community, I’ve discovered that his potential pardon for individuals held in prison for non-violent Bitcoin offenses is an intriguing aspect of his appeal. This gesture underscores Trump’s newfound interest in digital assets, making him a compelling figure to these groups.
Trump, with his newfound openness towards cryptocurrencies and acceptance of donations in this form for his campaign, pledged to create a welcoming atmosphere for crypto in the United States.
Trump pledged to halt what he described as Biden’s campaign against cryptocurrencies and shield people engaged in crypto-related activities from undue regulatory restrictions. A significant shift from his earlier views on digital currencies.
