As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of “House of the Dragon,” I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as I watched last week’s episode unfold. The cliffhanger surrounding Aegon II‘s fate left me on the edge of my seat, wondering if the young king had met his demise at the hands of his treacherous brother Aemond Targaryen.
Last week, “House of the Dragon” viewers were left in suspense as they pondered if Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) had been dethroned due to his brother Aemond Targaryen’s (Ewan Mitchell) attempted regicide and Princess Rhaenys’ (Eve Best) heroic defense. In the final moments of Episode 4, “The Red Dragon and the Gold,” we were given a fleeting glimpse beneath Sunfyre’s scorched wings, leaving us hanging for answers. As we transitioned into this week’s episode, those long-awaited confirmations arrived in true Martin-esque fashion, complete with a healthy dose of gore. Surprisingly, Aegon remains alive, but his condition is far from ideal.
I’m captivated by how masterfully the tension builds as Aegon is brought back to King’s Landing hidden away. The crowd acclaims him as their hero as he’s carefully extracted from the worn-out crate and placed on his bed. The maesters rush in, working tirelessly in a gruesome scene to save their monarch. Plates are torn off his chest, along with skin, revealing bones being put back into place. It’s clear Aegon is still alive, but the arduous journey towards recovery lies ahead. Thankfully, Aemond’s brother, standing beside Alicent (Olivia Cooke), maintains a steadfast gaze forward, already plotting the next move in our meticulously planned strategy.
All hail Aemond, new Prince Regent and Protector of the Realm
Aegon, our king, will be temporarily stepping down from his throne, leaving Aemond to take charge. This strategic move, regardless of how Queen Alicent feels about it, strengthens the Green faction’s position. Known for his tactical prowess and being one of the most formidable fighters in “House of the Dragon,” Aemond is more than capable of handling the duties effectively, despite his bratty demeanor which is even more obnoxious than Joffrey from “Game of Thrones.” The council members were hesitant to support Aemond due to his controversial past, but in the end, it was the best decision. However, relinquishing such power back to Aegon might not be an easy task.
When Aegon comes to again, the relationship between him and Aemond is likely to mirror that of their father, Viserys (Paddy Considine) and Daemon (Matt Reeves), during a time when the Iron Throne was unstable. One brother lies in bed, recovering, while the other seizes the opportunity to assert himself. The anticipated clash between Aegon and Aemond is sure to unfold once the former regains consciousness. Regrettably, neither sibling possesses their father’s self-control and composure, which may exacerbate the Greens’ existing troubles instead of resolving them. We shall observe if the brothers’ dispute ignites when “House of the Dragon” continues next week.
