13 Worst Roommates Ever in Movies, Ranked

It seems that in both “Cry Wolf” and “Single White Female,” there are characters who become dangerously close to the protagonist, leading to unsettling situations. In “Cry Wolf,” Tom’s quick acceptance of Owen into his friend group may have put him in harm’s way, while in “Single White Female,” Hedy’s obsession with her roommate Allie leads to a series of disturbing events. These characters’ behaviors range from questionable to downright harmful, making for intriguing and suspenseful films. If you’re interested in watching these movies, they can be rented on Apple TV.

Living on your own may seem appealing initially, but it’s important to consider the hidden expenses, maintenance responsibilities, and the potential for feelings of isolation. For instance, students moving into their first dorm room or adults choosing to live with a partner or roommate share several advantages and challenges. While having a roommate can bring benefits such as cost savings, companionship, and shared responsibilities, it may also involve compromises on personal space and privacy, differences in living habits, and potential conflicts.

Through Netflix’s unsettling “Worst Roommate Ever” docuseries, we’ve discovered that seemingly harmless and well-groomed individuals can harbor shocking and undesirable personality traits, making it an uneasy prospect to cohabit with them. In the cinematic realm, these hidden cons may manifest as a bothersome talkative person, a pushy snob, or a psychopathic murderer.

Many movies have brought to life some truly horrible roommates, making audiences grateful for their own comfortable living arrangements.

In the captivating neighborhood of Pacific Heights, San Francisco, live delightful couple Patty and Drake. Freshly proud owners of a refined Victorian house, they are elated to commence renovations. To alleviate some financial burdens, they decide to rent out certain units. Among their new tenants is an enigmatic man named Hayes, who boasts an elegant wardrobe and a sleek car. However, he expresses reluctance when it comes to disclosing extensive details about his past or financial situation. As suspenseful thriller aficionados might suspect, this seemingly charming tenant soon becomes a source of unwanted complications.

Eviction Notice Now

Once Hayes enters and secures himself in the apartment, Patty and Drake ought to have distanced themselves from this man. Nonetheless, had they acted prudently, there would have been no intriguing storyline. Although they aren’t official roommates, they all reside within close proximity and even separate dwellings in the same house don’t seem far enough. Hayes brings along unwelcome insects, invades their privacy, engages in confrontations, and is an appalling presence when one seeks peace and tranquility.

Nestled in the picturesque London district called Notting Hill, lies a romantic comedy produced in 1999. The quaint bookshop is owned by William Thacker, who is trying to come to terms with his recent divorce as his wife had left him for another man. In walks an American actress named Anna Scott, and to help him navigate through these tumultuous times are his friend and roommate, Spike.

He Means Well

It’s challenging to add Spike to this list due to his charming personality. Nevertheless, Will soon discovers that he makes an inconsiderate and untidy roommate. While we might overlook his habit of strolling around in just underwear and a t-shirt, his lack of responsibility, messiness, and obliviousness are significant drawbacks. Would audiences want to befriend Spike? Perhaps. However, he requires substantial maturation before becoming a suitable live-in buddy.

Bridesmaids (2011)

As a gamer, I can rephrase that in a more relatable and conversational way: In the movie “Bridesmaids,” my character, Annie, feels an obligation to be the maid of honor for her best friend Lillian’s wedding. Deep down, I wish things were different for me – my business didn’t flop, my ex-boyfriend didn’t leave me, and my new job paid more. But no matter how tough it gets, I understand the importance of being there for my friend and keeping a positive attitude, even when things don’t go as planned.

What Happened In Their Family?

Annie resides with her two British siblings, Brynn and Gil, who may not appear frequently on screen but quickly establish themselves as unpleasant housemates. Their behavior is far from desirable; they invade Annie’s privacy by reading her diary and using her possessions without permission, and later deny any wrongdoing. Their exhausting presence makes it challenging for Annie to cope. The siblings unexpectedly evicted Annie with the vague statement, “We’d prefer if you no longer lived with us.” Despite their politeness, they provided no warning and forced her out immediately. These two are better off living apart from each other.

10 Davey Stone

Eight Crazy Nights (2022)

In the movie “Eight Crazy Nights,” Davey Stone was once a brilliant child with a supportive family and circle of friends. He shone on the basketball court, eagerly anticipating his parents’ attendance at his major game. Sadly, instead of their arrival, law enforcement broke the news that they had passed away. As an adult, Davey has succumbed to alcoholism and a life of crime, showing disregard for those around him. His actions have landed him in legal trouble, leading him to come under the watchful care of the kindly elderly man, Whitney.

He’s Angry With the World

As a devoted fan of this heartwarming Hanukkah film, I can’t help but reflect on how an uninviting character like Davey ended up sharing living quarters with Whitney and his beloved sister Eleanore. Initially, it was a mystery to me why they didn’t ask him to leave after the first day. After all, Davey was notoriously rude, careless, and delighted in provoking others.

Marriage Story (2019)

An engaging film about a married couple undergoing a divorce? I’ll pass. The concept may seem straightforward, but it effectively unfolds the complexities of this story. In “Marriage Story,” we follow Charlie and Nicole, a New York-based couple with a young son. Their marriage faces challenges, and when Nicole receives an enticing job offer in California, she decides to take it, ultimately triggering the painful process of divorce and child custody disputes.

Right Where It Hurts

Charlie and Nicole, despite their imperfections, have resonated with numerous viewers. However, if we had to choose between the two as a partner in real life, many would concede that Nicole’s complaints about Charlie’s self-centeredness hold merit. Charlie’s unyielding dedication to his career often leaves those close to him neglected.

Roommates like Charlie and Nicole, despite being close, can still have disagreements. Charlie’s ability to hurtfully comment on Nicole’s sensitive points, however, is unlikely to make others want to share living quarters with him.

Knocked Up (2007)

Knocked Up tells the story of a romantic comedy where a one-night stand leads to unintended consequences. Allison Scott, an ambitious reporter on the verge of career success, is urged by her sister to lighten up and enjoy life. In contrast, Ben Stone embodies laziness and lacks motivation, preferring to while away his days with his carefree roommates. Their paths cross at a nightclub, result in an unexpected pregnancy, and drastically alter their lives.

Fun in Doses

In a romantic tale as customary, the couple takes center stage. However, Ben’s boisterous flatmates lurk in the periphery, unwittingly creating unease for Allison. Despite their apparent harmless intent, they manage to make her feel uncomfortable. Their exuberant nature could be entertaining for brief periods or even a single night out. Yet, their relentless partying and disregard for personal space would prove exhausting in the long run. Among the quartet, it’s challenging to determine which one is the most problematic.

7 Nomi Malone

Showgirls (1995)

13 Worst Roommates Ever in Movies, Ranked13 Worst Roommates Ever in Movies, Ranked13 Worst Roommates Ever in Movies, Ranked

Showgirls, released in 1995, is a film that sparked intense debates among viewers, with some admiring its boldness while others found it offensive. The story follows Nomi, a determined woman with dreams of becoming a showgirl in Las Vegas. Upon arriving in the city, she takes up work as a stripper and sets her sights on climbing the ranks to eventually appear on marquees. During her first day, she befriends Molly, a young professional who becomes her roommate.

The Worst Main Character

As a gamer, I’d describe my encounter with Nomi in this way: When I first met Nomi, she surprised me by pulling a knife on a hitchhiker we picked up along the way. She intended to convey toughness through this action, but it only left me feeling uneasy and questioning her mental stability instead. As the game progressed, Nomi continued to make choices that were supposed to embody strength and empowerment. However, I couldn’t help but notice how these decisions also revealed her self-centered, entitled, and ruthless nature.

Nomi distances herself from Molly, the good Samaritan who once offered her shelter during hard times, and now mistreats her unnecessarily. The lesson from “Showgirls”: Molly deserved more kindness and respect.

6 George Lutz

The Amityville Horror (2005)

13 Worst Roommates Ever in Movies, Ranked13 Worst Roommates Ever in Movies, Ranked13 Worst Roommates Ever in Movies, Ranked

The Amityville Horror began as a book before turning into a horror franchise. The Lutz family consists of George, Kathy, and her three kids from a prior relationship. Their new home in Amityville, New York is massive with a great yard, but there’s something eerie about it. George begins acting strange the longer the family is in the house. When Kathy learns of the previous owners’ tragic story, she wonders if this new start may cause their eventual end.

Worst Stepdad of the Year

George strives to assume the role of a loving father in our household, but when the home environment transforms him, he becomes an unimaginable nightmare as a roommate. His behavior towards the children is harsh and cruel, leaving Kathy feeling emotionally and physically detached from him. Outbursts of rage further add to his unsettling demeanor. In order to gain the kids’ trust, particularly Billy who has been reluctant to accept him, George would be well-advised to abandon the ominous behavior that is reminiscent of possession.

After (2019)

13 Worst Roommates Ever in Movies, Ranked13 Worst Roommates Ever in Movies, Ranked13 Worst Roommates Ever in Movies, Ranked

In plain terms, among the characters in the novel “After” by Annie Herron, several contenders come to mind for being the least favorable. The story kicks off with Tessa, a shy young woman embarking on her college journey.

In the initial stages of her stay, she encounters numerous individuals. Among them are Hardin, a British heartthrob with a mysterious demeanor who later becomes her romantic interest, and Steph, her lively roommate. Steph stands in stark contrast to Tessa; she’s outgoing, enjoys social gatherings, imbibes alcohol, and is sexually adventurous. Tessa, on the other hand, is as pure as driven snow and would never engage in such activities.

Are Single Rooms Available?

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: In the game of life, Steph and Hardin each take turns being the problematic roommates. Steph lets Hardin waltz in unannounced to Tessa and their shared space, while she’s left out of the loop. Moreover, when others belittle or plot against Tessa, she fails to defend her friend and stand up for herself. On the other hand, once my character, Tessa, gets involved with Hardin, things take a turn for the worse. I become engrossed in my relationship with him, leaving Steph and our mutual friends behind without so much as a heads-up. To add insult to injury, I offload all my problems onto Hardin without giving it a thought, and eventually move out in a hasty fashion. The truth is, neither of these ladies shines brightly in the friendship department.

4 Rebecca

The Roommate (2011)

In “The Roommate,” Sara is a new college student who shares a dormitory with Rebecca. Despite their striking resemblance, Rebecca initially comes across as friendly. However, Rebecca has gone through significant hardships in the past, including the loss of her sister and unwanted advances from an ex-boyfriend. As the academic term progresses, Rebecca’s behavior towards Sara grows more possessive and jealous of anyone who attempts to interfere between them.

Sleep With One Eye Open

In this chilling horror movie, the narrative follows a common pattern found in many “obsession” films. The character of Rebecca becomes increasingly possessive towards Sara, subtly shaping her new roommate’s identity to suit her own desires. As is typical for the genre, elements of murder are introduced. However, Rebecca’s homicidal behavior isn’t the only irritating aspect; she is simply aggravating in general. Despite this, Sara remains patient and tolerant, but even the kindest souls have their breaking points.

Child’s Play (1988)

The iconic doll killer Chucky may take the prize for worst roommate and worst toy. Though now a staple in horror, before 1988’s Child’s Play, the world didn’t know about Charles Lee Ray. He was a criminal who died and came back to life. But his soul got trapped in a Good Guy doll. This doll ends up in the possession of Andy, a sweet little boy who lives with his mother. Despite Andy telling people there’s something off with this toy, no one listens. But they will soon enough.

No, We Don’t Wanna Play

Chucky and Andy frequently shared the same room and sometimes even the same bed, making them close living companions. A poor roommate can significantly disrupt your sleep pattern, keeping you awake through the night. While this is typically due to excessive noise or incessant chatter for most people, the fear of being murdered is an additional unwelcome disturbance. And when Chucky attempted to take control of Andy’s body? Definitely not an acceptable behavior.

Cry Wolf (2005)

In “Cry Wolf,” Owen Matthews is the latest addition to the student body at his new boarding school, determined not to let down his father once more by getting expelled. Sporting a British accent, he finds himself an outsider in this New England community. However, he manages to win over Tom’s social circle with ease.

To combat boredom, they leverage the terror instilled by a recent local homicide and create a fictitious serial killer targeting their campus. However, it isn’t long before it becomes apparent that their fabricated killer might no longer be playing make-believe.

Rather Be Alone

Jared Padalecki portrays Tom, who has an unusual beginning with Owen. During their initial encounter, Tom extends a handshake while admitting he hadn’t washed it after using the restroom. This may seem friendly, but Tom inadvertently (or deliberately?) draws Owen into the killer’s sightline when inviting him into his social circle. Suspicious and quick to judge, Tom angrily accuses Owen when their shared living space is found in disarray, despite evidence pointing to someone else. Overall, it’s best for us to observe Tom from a distance.

In the movie “Single White Female,” Allie, a software designer, resides with her fiancĂ© Sam. However, when she uncovers his infidelity, her living situation becomes chaotic. In response, Allie places an ad seeking a new housemate, which attracts a woman named Hedy. The two quickly develop a strong connection. Yet, Sam persists in trying to rekindle things with Allie. Unwilling to let go of their bond, Hedy takes drastic measures to keep Allie by her side.

Too Close for Comfort

Before the movie reveals a darker side, Hedy’s behavior towards her roommate raises concerns. Deleting Sam’s voicemails without permission is an intrusion. Harming the dog she became jealous of is an immoral act. As the movie progresses, Hedy’s actions grow increasingly erratic and disturbing. Although forming a connection with your roommate is generally beneficial, Hedy takes it to extreme lengths.
